Avast ye mateys... ARRRRR!
There were pirates and then there were PIRATES! The latter had some big
brass ones, some became famous and the legacy lives on today like who
could forget Radio Caroline and to a lesser degree Radio New York
International? There was/is this very long lived broadcaster in Ireland I
can't remember the name of as usual that also had streaming audio on the
web I used to listen to and became a "member" on their web site. Back on
this side of the pond were a whole slew of pirates in the New York/Ner
Jersey metro area on AM and later FM I used to listen to and one WRNI in
Brooklyn was later associated with the RNI pirate ship, I listened to
them both and was sometimes featured on Johny Lightning's call in show.
Darn expensive calls! (;->) After the FCC explosion like planetary debris
they coalesced into WBCQ licensed in Maine with feed from 11RNI,
Lightning DOES strike twice and speaks with a thick unmistakable Brooklyn
accent.
Oh no, a classic radio in the trash is like... oh words can't describe
the heartbreak. Yup, the 303 was big but at least you could carry it; the
RCA AR-88 is why they are called boat anchors and the R-390 is only a few
ounces lighter. Between the RCAs and the Hallicrafters stuff I'm
surprised the boat didn't sink before it got to London and they were set
up at the Blechley Park monitoring station. Heh, check out some pictures,
barely an Eddystone to be found. (;->) On the other had I've seen a few
of those at hamfests along with some rare German command sets and boxes
of tubes with original Wermacht markings. Wouldn't you know by the time I
spotted those tubes I had already spent my lunch money? Then there was
another box full of early radar tubes looking like ordinary metal
receiving tubes with octal bases and grid caps and something that made me
flip, several NIB image orthicons! Frankly I don't know how I survived
the heart attack.
Yup, I never had a subscription but managed to get my hands on the Pop
Com mags and like Pop 'Tronics before it has a pirate section authored by
"John Teach" (Bluebeard) AKA Tom Kneitel who also writes under Curt N.
Sterba and others. Remember Tomcat from CB Magazine? Yup, same ham from
Long Island NY who has pissed me off from the very start for more reasons
than I can list here. Tom if you're reading this WUMS is alive and well
at Ole Mis (University of Mississippi) so UP YOURS!
Since the statute of limitations ran out long ago I may as well let you
in on that little secret, I built Radio Free New Jersey, WERG, and WUMS
and was instrumental in the workings of WBC and the Underground Network
so yeah... yo ho ho and a bottle of Coke.
A poggy day? That's a new one so maybe you can tell me what pogs have to
do with it. You wouldn't like it much around here in summer, Maria might
because it's rather like Brazil away from the coast. Funny how my friend
in Edinburgh complains about the weather, he's never been to New Jersey.
(;->)
Oh before I close a bit of an afterthought. I got quite a shock one day
reading the Clandestine column in Pop 'Tronics one day; there it was for
all to see a report of hearing a mysterious station WERG "the last word
in radio". Hey stupid, the logo was The Last WERG In Radio! (;->)
