SILENT KEY
Wayne Knowles ZL2BKC
It is, with sadness and shock that we lost Wayne ZL2BKC from the ham radio fold. He passed away on Dec 30 2022. Wayne was an extremely talented person in many engineering aspects both electronic and mechanical. He worked as a computer systems hardware field engineer in the early days of employment and
also had an amazing talent for software programming as well to which he spent the remainder of his working life doing. Some of us have memories back in the 80's, of him reengineering the firmware for the Pac Comm TNC220 and Micropower2 TNCs to be able to run Kiss mode and TCP/IP over AX25 Packet Radio.
He had great creative talent in the RF world evident by the many beautifully built microwave transverters with nice little colour LCD screen graphics. He contributed to the Ham fraternity with the well-known “ZL PLL” series of PLL boards based on ADF4350/51 and later on, the ADF5356 PLL capable of running to 13 GHz. Many of these boards were used in ZL & VK for Local Oscillators
(LO) within microwave transverters along with beacon controllers used in both ZL & VK. He was active on bands reaching up to 76 GHz.
Wayne was the “other” end of many microwave contacts during contests and was always keen to go out and test either his or others microwave setups. He was a very friendly and personable guy who would bend over backwards to help others and give technical support where needed.
He had other interests such as push bike riding and no so long ago, did the Cape Reinga to bluff bike ride in 24 days circa 3000 km over a combination of cycle trails, tracks, paths and country roads.
Rest in Peace Wayne you will be sadly missed by many on the air and condolences to your family."
Thanks and 73,
Simon, ZL1SWW

Summer VHF/UHF and above Field Day
Dont forget the Summer session of the VHF/UHF field day is next weekend - Saturday 14 0100 UTC through 0059 UTC on Sunday 15 January(0400 / 0359 in VK6). Why not come on and give out a few contacts from home, or even head out portable as the weather is looking promising.
There are as always many different categories that you can participate in. There is the single band section that allows use of any one band, the popular 4 band section that covers the relatively popular bands of 6M, 2M, 70cm and 23cm. Then there is the open section that covers all the bands above 6M up to 133 GHz. There are the sections for portable stations to operate for either 8 hours or 24 hours, sections for home stations to operate for 8 hours or 24 hours, or become a rover for either 8 hours or 24. There are also a section for portable multi operators so why not go portable with a mate or 2.
The usual frequencies will be in use around VK7. Try listening on 52.525 MHz, 146.500 MHz, 439.000 MHz and 1296.150 MHz as well as 2403.150 MHz, 3398.150 MHz and 10,368.150 MHz all on FM. Of course as the summer DX stars may align and bands will be opening up then it would pay to check the usual call frequencies. These are 50.110 MHz, 144.100 MHz, 432.100 MHz and 1296.100 all on USB. Please have a tune around as there may be stations further up the band, you just never know who you may hear and work!
As usual you will need to know your 6 digit maidenhead grid square locator. There are many resources to find this either phone apps or use of online mapping tools.
The choice of logging is still the VKCL program as the rules haven't changed at all and It does seem to tick all the boxes. There are others as well. If you are having issues with logging software please reach out to me and I will be happy to assist where I can. As is usual please take care and aim to log accurately.. dont be caught out with the wrong mode or band and loose valuable contacts. Remember with VKCL FM contacts will show up green.. default is SSB, so make each contact count. Also ensure that your clock in your PC is set accurately so all the contacts will tally once the logs are all checked.
Once the contest is over, run an eye over your log to eliminate any glaring typos, and then submit your log to the address below. Then it's done and you cant forget 😊
Most importantly have a great time!
Hope to hear you on the higher bands

DATV Experimenter's Night
https://fb.me/e/2JoFedbKt
We started the night with Tony VK7VKT and Clayton VK7ZCR who told us about the radio and streaming work they undertake for journos covering the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
The first night is the key time when things happen and the most exciting time with most things happening on the radio. Tony took the audience through the history which for him started in 2012 and Clayton got involved a few year later.
John Curnow and Rob Cothy who are insider sailing journos who use the material that is streamed and they build stories around the streaming content and put these stories on the various Sailing websites. They all share a Skype Channel to share and check content.
Butt is audio recording software that grabs 5m blocks of time and uploads to the cloud.
https://danielnoethen.de/
Tony and Clayton both record and get reception on 4 & 6 MHz (80 and 40m) using amateur antennas and SDRs and TS-870 / TS-2000 as well as listening on Marine VHF Channel 81 when they come around Tasman Island.
They don't get too much sleep and we went through the all important Green Cape Declaration before they go across Bass Strait and Tony had a recording and the story of Comanche Androo making the declaration.
We went throught an interesting scenario where BlackJack, JBW, HRC was not hearing each other however Clayton and Tony could hear the boat clearly.
We went through some pictures of JBW Radio Relay Vessel and Hobart Race Control and there was Cedric VK7CL at the controls.
We had an example of making a story from very little information - Tony used some flight radar data to show the owner flying over the East Coast and a story was created.
Clayton then showed some of the amazing pictures he took on the media vessel with his phone night mode - Clayton showed the great pictures he took with his Galaxy 22S.
We played a recording of the radio chatter about a Personal Locator Beacon going off along with the 2014 Mayday call in relation to an aircraft in the water.
Clayton and Tony took the audience through the media boat excitement. Thanks to Tony and Clayton for relating their experience.
We then moved to one of the many widgets available for smart phones including maidenhead locator using the GPS down to 10 digit maidenhead locator with demo.
We took a look at E-Tags electronics and their usage.
We then took a look at the Magnetic Loop Progress including the variable vacuum capacitor drive mechanism.
Thanks to Phil VK7ZPD who put Justin onto a wonderful project by Dave G7IYK of a Magnetic Loop Tuner. https://www.instructables.com/Magnetic-Loop-Antenna-Automated-Tuner/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1_55jIRz6o
We are running throughout the holiday period and this week we have DUBUS Magazine, more on the Mag loop project and 160m short Vertical testing and much more.
We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/
https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/
We go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
