Silent Key
Christine Bullock VK7MCG
The Broadcast Committee is sad to relate that on Tuesday December 27th Christine passed quietly away after a short illness at the Launceston General Hospital with her partner, Paul, VK7PG by her side.
Although not active on air in recent years, Christine had been a major supporter of amateur radio in northern VK7 By co-hosting barbecues on behalf of WIA Northern Branch when she and Paul lived at Scamander; these attracted state-wide patronage.
After moving to Launceston, she and Paul opened up their home many times for the holding of AOCP assessments, a memorable feature of which was Christineâ€Ös catering prowess. This activity persisted until NTARC obtained the Archer Street Clubrooms.
At the time of writing, it was planned to hold a wake on Saturday December 31st at one of her favourite haunts: the Yorktown Camp site, Watermill Cottage.
Vale Christine.

Happy New Year
Welcome to all our listeners and volunteers. The VK7 Amateur Radio News Team wish you all a safe and healthy entry into 2023.
There are well over 20 amateurs around VK7 who are involved in creating, reading, recording and rebroadcasting the news each week and a sincere and heartfelt thanks goes to you all.
Why not show your support by calling into the frequency you are listening to and letting them know you are listening.

Media News
Amateurs On Media Duty
Again in 2022, Clayton VK7ZCR and Tony VK7VKT were having a heap of fun shortwave listening and working alongside media outlets providing up to the second reports on how the fleet is traveling in the 2022 Sydney to Hobart.
What do they do? Well I am glad you asked. Essentially they listen out for calls to and from the fleet via Hobart Race Control (HRC) and JBW, the radio relay vessel and gather information on what's happening out there, real time, so the media guys can do what they do best and make a story out of it.
They record each and every moment of the event which is also streamed (More on that) so that the journo's can confirm the would be story with hard evidence before the story hits the electronic news moments later.
Did they sleep last night? Umm, no.
This gives the media guys that we are aligned with the head start that all so desperately want as they can literally go to "press" moments later with a story. One night as an example saw several PLB's (Personal Locator Beacons) activated (Accidental activations) as well as the all important "Green Cape Declarations) in the wee hours of the morning where the four super maxi's confirm they are sea worthy and can continue racing over Bass Strait. It has been pretty quiet compared to the previous 10 years that Tony VK7VKT has been doing this and not many years behind is Clayton VK7ZCR.
The recordings are quickly trimmed down from the 5 minute slices to just the bits the journo's need and via a constant Skype chat and audio/video calls, as well as shared cloud storage they are all in the loop. They then throw a link to Clayton and Tony of the story about to hit the media.
There are some frustrating times like when Blackjack, a super maxi trying to give its declaration, where Clayton and Tony were hearing HRC, JBW and the boat all a good S7-S9 but none could hear each other. Now, in the normal world of Amateur radio it would be the courteous thing to do to relay.... but of course the legalities of our licence, limitations on equipment and not wanting to interfere in a multi million dollar race we had to staple out PTT finger to the desks, hihi
Another aspect of what These guys do is also having media accreditation for the race where heading down the river to grab images for these guys is all part of the package. Obviously the work we do costs these guys $0.00 but the pay day is the trip down the river and all that goes with the race in the non public areas dockside.
Ahh, the streaming part... Well, occasionally these guys do like to lay down for a few minutes during the night so with the trusty AirPods and phones playing the streams they can have a spell away from our radios but still have an ear on what's going on.

Contest News
Ross Hull Memorial VHF/UHF Contest
This contest was established in 1950 to honour the memory of the late Ross A. Hull and his pioneering achievements in the study of tropospheric propagation and the development of new equipment techniques for the higher bands.
This contest start TODAY and runs for the month of January 2023.
Entrants may operate on every contest day, but the final score is based on the best seven days nominated by the entrant.
For amateurs with limited operating time, there is also a "Best 2 Days" section.
Each contact scores one point for each 100 km of distance worked. This score is then multiplied by the band multiplier. The total score is the sum of the scores on all bands.
Full contest rules are available in the link on the email edition of this broadcast.
https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/rosshull/
Contest Scoring is based on distance calculated using your maidenhead grid locator. You will need to exchange 6 digit Maidenhead locators to get an accurate distance measurement.
At the end of January you will need to submit your log by 23:59 UTC on 14th February 2023 by email to: rosshull(at)wia.org.au
Certificates are awarded to all entrants, including certificates for the top scoring amateurs in each category.
Any logging software can be used so long as the necessary information is included in the log. Please refer to the rules for details about this. VKCL still works along with N1MM.
Look forward to hearing you on the upper bands.

Contest News
Summer VHF/UHF and above Field Day
Donâ€Öt forget the Summer session of the VHF/UHF field day is sneaking up on us quickly, happening this year on the weekend of Saturday 14 0100 UTC through 0059 UTC on Sunday 15 January(0400 / 0359 in VK6). This is 2 weeks away so lets make the most of the possibilities of some fantastic contacts if conditions are right. So why not come on and give out a few contacts from home, or even head out portable as the weather is looking promising.
There are as always many different categories that you can participate in. There is the single band section that allows use of any one band, the popular 4 band section that covers the relatively popular bands of 6M, 2M, 70cm and 23cm. Then there is the open section that covers all the bands above 6M up to 133 GHz. There are the sections for portable stations to operate for either 8 hours or 24 hours, sections for home stations to operate for 8 hours or 24 hours, or become a rover for either 8 hours or 24. There are also a section for portable multi operators so why not go portable with a mate or 2.
The usual frequencies will be in use around VK7. Try listening on 52.525 MHz, 146.500 MHz, 439.000 MHz and 1296.150 MHz as well as 2403.150 MHz, 3398.150 MHz and 10,368.150 MHz all on FM. Of course as the summer DX stars may align and bands will be opening up then it would pay to check the usual call frequencies. These are 50.110 MHz, 144.100 MHz, 432.100 MHz and 1296.100 all on USB. Please have a tune around as there may be stations further up the band, you just never know who you may hear and work!
As usual you will need to know your 6 digit maidenhead grid square locator. There are many resources to find this either phone apps or use of online mapping tools.
The choice of logging is still the VKCL program as the rules haven't changed at all and It does seem to tick all the boxes. There are others as well. If you are having issues with logging software please reach out to me and I will be happy to assist where I can. As is usual please take care and aim to log accurately.. donâ€Öt be caught out with the wrong mode or band and loose valuable contacts. Remember with VKCL FM contacts will show up green.. default is SSB, so make each contact count. Also ensure that your clock in your PC is set accurately so all the contacts will tally once the logs are all checked.
Once the contest is over, run an eye over your log to eliminate any glaring typos, and then submit your log to the address below. Then it's done and you canâ€Öt forget 😊
Most importantly have a great time!
Hope to hear you on the higher bands

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
www.ntarc.net
Well, here it is, the start of a New Year and NTARC would like to commence this weekâ€Ös segment by wishing all listeners a Happy New Year and all the best for 2023. We also wish you good luck towards your New Years Eve resolution. Hihi
Nothing much has changed since last week, Club room and Club activities have yet to recommence. If there have been any amazing developments on the local radio front, word has yet to reach your scribe, so it will once again be largely a repeat of coming events.
Itâ€Ös that time of the year again - 2023 Membership fees - a big thank you to all those members who have paid their 2023 subs. Our Treasurer has been very busy writing up receipts. To those that as yet havenâ€Öt renewed just a further reminder that your 2022 membership has technically expired last night on the 31st of December and you will now be listed on the membership register as an un-financial member. Your status will stay that way until you have renewed your membership or until the 30 of June when your name will be removed permanently from the membership register.
In case you have forgotten, NTARCâ€Ös 2023 membership fees are still just $40.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.
As all listeners must be aware, the replacement of aging legacy equipment along with other ongoing care and maintenance of our repeater systems does not come cheap. For you to be able to continue to enjoy this aspect of our hobby and for NTARC to continue to provide this great network, we need your support.
If you are not a member of NTARC please consider joining. If you have been a member in the past but have let that membership lapse for any reason, please consider re-joining. In either case, an application form can be found on our website www.ntarc.net or why not pop into the clubroom on a Friday, during coffee hours and collect an application. You will be made most welcome.
If club membership is not your cup of tea, we fully understand. In those circumstances, perhaps you might care to make a direct donation to our repeater fund, rather than pay a yearly subscription. If so, we would be happy to receive your contribution, either in person at a club meeting or coffee morning, or by post to PO BOX 275 Launceston 7250. Any donation will gladly be accepted. All donations will be officially receipted and noted accordingly against the repeater project.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The TestNet and TechNet session - will be resuming on Wednesday the 11th of January. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm…. and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW. Who knows it might be worth a check on the frequencies over the Christmas New Year break as amateurs have been known to just talk for the fun of it.
The Friday Coffee Morning - will be resuming on Friday the 13th of January at the NTARC Club rooms. Catch up time is from 10.00 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all.
January General meeting - Saturday 14th January 2023. Rocherlea Club rooms, meeting to commence at 14:00 hours (2.00pm). Afternoon tea will follow.
The Club Technical night - will be resuming on Wednesday the 18th of January at the NTARC Club rooms.
FINALLY - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.
Thatâ€Ös all folks,

DATV Experimenter's Night
https://fb.me/e/2JoFedbKt
We started the program with Rex VK7MO and his experiments with Brodie VK3MAP on 2m with Auroral propagation - this was prompted by some discussion on the WSJT-X lists about what WSJT mode for Auroral contacts - Q65-15c appears to be the go.
Rex showed many decodes with nothing showing on the waterfall but many decodes and a huge variation in audio frequencies up to a variation of over 300 hertz. More than half of the transmissions decoded demonstrating significant ability to decode using this WSJT mode. About 60% of the time it would decode - if you removed the callsigns from the DX callbox and my callbox the decode reduced to 20%. Even random messages were being decoded.
Each station was running 100W and VK3MAP was running two multi element phased yagis and Rex was running one 19 element yagi. Very interesting results - thanks Rex.
Justin VK7TW then went into his reception of the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program, or HAARP chirp radar that was bouncing a signal off a passing asteroid. HAARP is a scientific endeavor aimed at studying the properties and behavior of the ionosphere.
HAARP put out a call via the ARRL for amateurs to listen on 9.6MHz LFM 30kHz BW for chirp radar toward a passing Asteroid testing. Justin showed what he receive in a screen grab and video of receiving the Chirp Radar.
We then got Richard VK7ZBX to talk about the VHF/UHF Field Day contest at the end of January and the Ross Hull Contest which runs throughout January 2023.
Justin then showed his 15-40m Magnetic Loop. This loop uses LDF750 as the main loop and LDF450 for the coupling loop. The main loop has a vacuum variable capacitor from 5-200pF and everything is silver soldered together to reduce the resistance of the loop.
Justin used VK3CPU website to design the loop. https://miguelvaca.github.io/vk3cpu/magloop.html
We showed the construction of the loop in pictures.
NanoVNA testing confirmed the design specifications across 6.8 MHz to 22.8 MHz. Everything is housed in a 100mm PVC tube to support and provide weather proofing.
Justin is now working on the vacuum cap drive mechanism and he is waiting for PVC transition from 100-50mm to mount on the
We are running throughout the holiday period and this week we have something special with a segment on Sydney to Hobart Race Radio streaming and recording along with some great stories from over the years with Tony VK7VKT and Clayton VK7ZCR. We will also have an insider look at E-Tags used on mainland TollWays, more on the Mag Loop and 160m short Vertical testing and much more.
We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal.
