Well Bob, I'd like to thank you for being such a good loser. Australia's
sporting prowess in both team and individual events is recognised around
the world and it must come as a bit of a shock when your team doesn't win.
However, here in the UK we're well used to losing. One of the reasons is
that sport is not considered "that" important. It's only when the country
gets close to wining anything that the collective pysche of the nation gets
interested. Then we lose and the finger of blame gets pointed at some poor
scapegoat. You also need to be aware that the UK consists of 3 main
constituent parts, all of which consider themselves as nations, so a lot of
Scots and Welsh people will have been rooting for the Wallabies on the
"anyone but England" principle. They're more gutted than all of Australia
as they'll have to live next door to the world champions for the next 4
years.

It is nice to be on the wining side for a change. A novel experience for a
large proportion of the country, many who weren't born last time England
won a team sport world championship. The only real problem with wining is
that the tabloid press will go on and on about it without rest now. The
England rugby team did actually win the championship unlike the England
world cup football team who won in 1966 more down to biased referees,
dubious draws, and doubtful goals. But there again, if you only win every
40 years or so, it's understandable that people will make a fuss. Knowing
England, you never know when they'll ever win again.

Anyway, I'm sure you glad that we won it rather than the Kiwis, just as
we're glad the French didn't win it :-)
