Hi Peter and Peter readers,
Since the fall of the government of The Republic of Andy Pandy Land and
mass exodus of the population leaving but one (Andy) it has ceased to be
a DXCC entity. The buro no longer handles QSLs since dropping it from the
registry so it's unlikely that Andy will QSL, it is possible postal
service has been also discontinued since I can no longer find the postal
code. Never mind his sour grape excuses and lame attempt to discourage
the rest of us from QSLing, one of our long standing traditions. Just
think of him as a fiddler on the roof without a fiddle. TRADITION! (;->)
How well I remember SWL cards and all the variations the CBers came up
with including the business sized eyeball cars with eyeballs printed on
them. Wallpaper cards were also popular and cheap, just supply the roll
and have some high school kid print them up in Shop. My Popular
Electronics WPE2MTN card pictured me in my native environment, a mess of
parts strewn around the room and a soldering iron burning a hole in the
bed. That BTW was inspired by a real event, I set my bed on fire!
Sometimes I got a whole envelope stuffed with "via" cards and a handful
of eyeballs from CBers all over the US but unfortunately none from
Canada, not even from my tour of the St. Lawrence, but never mind those
Quebecois.
I had so much fun at "coffee breaks" from small meetings at a local diner
to national events, CB was great fun until the mid 70s when like you
said, it went nuts. It became like that famous rat experiment, when the
population outstripped the environment they fed on each other until all
that is left are a few linearized loud mouths up in Essex County and a
few lonely truckers on the New Jersey Turnpike. Even when 11M was wide
open a few years ago all I heard were a few Mexicans and UK freebanders
on 10M. (Hola onze metros, esto es la cucaracha de la Caribe Puerto Rico,
cambio cambio adelante!)
Now take another look at those QSL cards plastering the wall in the movie
Wavelength and notice they're mostly quite authentic CB cards from the
NYC metro area issued in the late '60s. Maybe that Heathkit was tweaked
down to 11M, niether used an Amateur or any callsign for that matter.
(;->)
QSLers unite, stamp out Andy! (;->)
