Hello all,
The Sydney newspapers have had a new puzzle for the last
6 or 7 months called SUDOKU. It's a logic puzzle where you fill in the
missing numbers in a 9x9 grid. The 9x9 grid is divided into nine 3x3
grids. The object is to have each row, column and 3x3 grid containing all
the numbers from 1 to 9; which means there can't be duplicate numbers in
any row, column or 3x3 grid.

It must be popular because one paper says that you can download the
latest puzzle to your mobile phone for A$6.60. For around half that cost
you can by a booklet at the newsagent containing >100 puzzles. I suppose
that's not as "cool" as getting a puzzle via your mobile phone.

The puzzles come in various degrees of difficulty. The Sydney Morning Herald
rates theirs as "Gentle", "Moderate", "Tough" and "Diabolical". As a rule,
the ratings are fairly right, but I've found most of the "Diabolical" ones
not that much harder to do than the "Gentle" ones. The two that were very
difficult turned out to each have three solutions.

I suppose, on average, they take around 15 minutes to solve. They're a
bit of a diversion from the cryptic crosswords which I've been doing for
many years.

Does anyone out there in packet radio land do these puzzles?

73s from Ralph VK2ZRG@VK2WI.#SYD.NSW.AUS.OC
