Bob tells us he won't be reading this, but I'm puzzled as to how
the following comment amounts to "rubbishing" John Howard:

Bob wrote:

>If you made such a remark about my country's OPM I would be most
>offended.

To which I replied:

>I'm not likely to - John Howard is not a world statesman like Bush,
Blair,
>Chirac et al. His main concern is domestic policy - his role in foreign
>policy is minor. (Not a criticism - a fact).

>From my perspective John Howard seems to be a good PM, a good ambassador
>for Oz, and an honest, straight-dealing guy who's made a good fist of
>handling Australia's buoyant economy.

>I'll defer to your better judgement if that's not the case - after all, I
>don't live there, so I don't really know what I'm talking about do I, but

>I hope my comments about Howard don't offend you.

Bob continued:

>John Howard got a rousing endorsement from the people at the election
here
> recently; he has also equalled the record of the most long serving PM
> in the history of this country (R.G.Menzies). He has continued high in
> the polls.

To which I responded, (from voting figures provided from Australia):

>60.5% of Oz voters didn't vote Liberal; the margin between Labor
>and Liberal was 2.9%. Thus, a swing towards Labor of 1.5% would
>have overtaken Liberal.

Those are facts - not an opinion.

What followed is an opinion:

>Hardly a ringing endorsement, but it was Howard's fourth term so he
>must be doing something right.

Well he must, mustn't he?

My own comments seem closely aligned to Bob's so I can't see what
he's upset about. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think so.
