Thanks to all for the help. My conclusion is probably not enough drive on
the sound card. All the adjustments from the control panel to the other
adjustments and rig were all to the max. I would not like to have the rig
volume wide open.
Jerry (KK6PA) suggested to add some drive from some type of external
source. I have a Timewave DSP 599zx which I will try in the next couple of
days.
Again thanks to all for all the help. Great bunch!!!!

Dear Martin and Fellow Warblers,
That's excellent advice, but it goes way beyond that.
Even if you are keying your PTT circuit from your PC via a serial port
interface, instead of using VOX, problems can still occur,
and I hear them often in PSK31 QSOs.
What happens is that people often have other applications running on their
machine
in addition to their PSK31 software, and those other applications are
sometimes activated by the operator for such purposes as looking up
callsigns in a database or performing some logging function, or just doing
several things at once during a dull QSO. The bottom line is that those
activities, which have nothing to do with whether system sounds are enabled
or not, can cause very noticeable clicks and pauses in your transmissions.
Apparently, this is a manifestation of the inability of the processor and
the operating system to actually do more than one thing at a time without a
glitch now and then. It is a significant problem for underpowered machines
and much less of a problem for processsors running at 300 MHz and up.
Check it out! (using the system speakers instead of modulating the rig, of
course)

Bob makes an interesting point about delays caused by underpowered CPUs.
But, back on the issue of inadvertent Window's sounds, I'd like to offer a suggestion:
Perhaps the next versions of popular PSK software can have a feature that
would automatically disable all Windows sounds when their program starts
up, and re-enable the sounds when exiting.
Until then, I still maintain that we should disable all sounds during PSK
sessions. Again, it's very simple:
Control Panel
Sounds
Scheme=No Sounds
OK
Maybe someone can even come up with a script (shortcut) for us all that
would do this automatically before starting up DigiPan, WinPSK, or whatever.

Short of disabling windows sounds or using a com port,
a 39 cent toggle switch from radio shack works also.
Hearing windows sounds broadcast on the cw bands makes
us all look like LIDS.

Hello Warblers,
Well, I started this discussion and now have time to explain that the
"Windows Sounds" were the result of, strange computer, strange radio,
difficult conditions and so on. Again, sorry about that.
At home I do have all of the sounds "off" and use PTT. As a further safe
guard I have installed a multi-pole switch in line with my cables. The
switch is off at boot and shut down, eliminating any possibility of key-up.
This also allows for testing of DigiPan macros and other testing.
I believe that as an operator gains knowledge of this mode the "sounds" get
eliminated. PSK31 has grown so much since the QST article and many
operators just haven't gotten set-up properly. Constructive negative
comments about a fellow Warblers signal should not be considered rude or in
bad taste. I welcome all comments positive or negative concerning my
signal. With a little effort we can help each other become better hams.

Well spoken like a true ham Jim.. It is going to
happen, it has happened to me, and thanks to relectors
like this and others the word will spread.. It sure
would be nice if all PSKERS were on the relectors, ;-)
