I just got through with a 60 hz hum session that was coming from my Hygain
Ham-IV control box. I determined through the use of jumper cables that I
had some kind of ground loop problem. I had not finished grounding my new
station layout. Tonight, I grounded everything in the shack of any
significance, including the control box and computer to my common rf ground
plate (PolyPhaser stuff). Hums gone. Quiet as a mouse. I'm just getting
too old to crawl around under tables hooking up ground cables. :-)

Just a quick note in support of John's post. I am using one of the most
possessed laptops ever (an EDS 200 MHz), and have had problems with
interfacing software and hardware before with this unit. RigBlaster
performed flawlessly and was sooooo easy to setup. They have a top notch
product and I am glad I made the purchase (I avoided the Dayton rush, hi,
hi). Standard disclaimer applies: I have no financial association with West
Mountain Radio, just a very very satisfied customer.

Subject: [psk31] Grounds and PC to Rig interconnections
Dear Fellow Warblers,
Some additional comments and explanation on my suggestion to use a "ground
breaker" adapter plug are in order.
First, I do not reccommend having the PC ungrounded - I just prefer to have
it grounded through other than the green wire on the power cord. My PC has a
large, braided ground strap connecting from the chassis to the transceiver,
and from there to the amplifier and from there to the tuner and from there
to the earth rod which is also the ground point for the Service Entry Panel.
As you can readily see, that is a good earth ground.
Everything in a hamshack has sneak paths (usually through the interwinding
capacitance of power transfromers) to grounds other than the direct path
through the main ground strap that you put in specifically to ground the
hamshack equipment. These additional paths can produce so-called "ground
loops" that lead to hum and other problems.
Any time a 1:1 isolation transformer is used and the schematic shows that
one side of each winding is being grounded, it is not a good idea to take
that literally. I may connect the "ground" side of a winding back to the
equipment ground for that side of the transformer, but that does NOT mean
that the "ground" of one piece of equipment and the ground of another piece
of equiipment are necessarily the same ground, or that they are even
connected together, and it certainly does not mean that the two "grounds"
are necessarily at the same potential. So, the last thing that I would do is
to connect the "ground" leads of a 1:1 isolation transformer together at the
transformer. That would be a good way to INSURE that undesirable ground loop
currents WILL be MIXED IN with the signal. The whole purpose of the
isolation transformer is to BREAK that direct connection.
In other words, there are grounds and there are grounds, and saying that
something is "ground" or "grounded" or naming a point as a "ground" DOES NOT
necessarily make it a "good" ground nor does it insure that all such points
are at the same potential.
PLEASE do not wave the National Electrical Code around as if it has all the
answers. The NEC is a necessary standard, and it has the respect of the
insurance companies, etc., but it is not infallible, and it can be very
difficult for a ham station to be in full compliance with all of its
provisions at once. For example, I believe it requires that your antenna
system be earthed at the same single point where your Service Entry Panel is
earthed. How many hams actually connect their antenna systems to that ground
rod before it enters the house?
(By the way, mine does.)

Hi fellers,
Thinking of Field Day 2000, and what equipment I was
going to take to the site, I wanted to set something up
that would allow me to stay on PSK with different rigs
or what ever, I came upon my old Heathkit Phone patch..
Audio from PC to phone line in, Phone Patch microphone
out to TXcvr, Micropone to Phone Patch.. THis gives me
Null balance, Level monitor, PSK or Mic mode with just
a flip of the switch, nice clean audio with
unbelieveable audio control.
Sure glad I didn't throw the Phone Patch away!

Hello all. GU is rather like being on a DXpedition all the time. Great
but lot's of contacts, all expecting QSL cards.
Have reorganised the shack and hope to get back up to speed on PSK31.
New computer expected so not quite there yet.
Please note that my QSL condx have changed after 35 years and 100% QSL.
Direct with postage or www.eQSL.cc only please.
SWL's via Buro as the one exception.
QSL's uploaded at least once a week. PSK31 contacts since the New Year
already available for download.
Have operated almost exclusively on PSK31 since last Summer hence my
posting to this group.
Thank you for the space.

For the first time in my "ham life" I'm free to work FD, but (Murphy's law
working perfectly), all of the "old FD hands" in our local club are not
available so the club is not -- for the first time in memory -- having a FD
event. However, since this is the first year I'm available, I'd like to do
some FD work from home. I've never even heard FD on the air because I've
always had a business convention this weekend -- which was moved up a week
this year. How about that for coordinating schedules? Any guidance that
could be given would be appreciated. I'm a new general but a FD "novice"!
