The new PSK31 QRP rig, PSK20 has it all built in. It doesn't
have to be as complicated as that in RIG Blaster, and in the
PSK20 it isn't. See the circuit diagram in June QST to see what
Small Wonder is doing in the PSK20.

She needs to make sure that she has a 16 bit soundblaster compatible card on
the computer and some type of interface between here rig and the computer.
The one Peter Martinez describes will work great or a commercial one like the
RIGblaster. The important thing is that she has atenuation and isolation of
the audio going into her transciever.

She can start listening simply by using a patch cord from the speaker or
headphone source on her transciever to her LINE IN jack on here lap top.

If she has an older laptop you may have to expiriment with resistor values in
the attenuation cicuit you build. Some older laptops, most notably Dell, have
audio output that is 20 - 30 db below newer laptops and desktop computers.

The RIGblaster isn't "complicated" just properly designed. And more
importantly the RIGblaster was NOT designed exclusively for PSK31 but to meet
the requirements of the 50 or more software packages for amatuer radio built
around the Soundblaster card.

The PSK20 is great if all you want to do is work PSK31 on 20m. Dan NN1G
produced a properly designed radio that does what its designed to do. Some
would look at it and say its complicated.

My point is that "complicated" and "simple" are very relative terms. The
PSK20 is a simple way to get on PSK31 (if you're into winding toroids). The
RIGblaster is a simple way to get into PSK31, SSTV, RTTY, Contest Voice
Keying, HSCW, etc.

So are any number of other options a "proper design", depending on
your needs and wants. Nothing wrong with the RIGblaser. If you *need*
transmit audio ground isolation, PTT circuit ground isolation,
automatic mike/sound card audio switch and don't want to build your
own then RIGblaster is a good choice. If you don't need that stuff
then there are less expensive, simpler options.

One thing RIGblaster doesn't do is isolate or amplify the receive
audio. If, for example, you want to feed the sound card line in with
the low level constant output from an Icom accessory plug then you'll
need some amplification. There are options available that can do that
as well.

John,

I'm running PSK31 using a Toshiba 320CDT laptop. It has built in sound
card, as do most relatively recent vintage laptops (i.e, circa 1996 or
newer). I use a Rigblaster (see www.westmountainradio.com) to interface
with my rig (TS-690S). This setup works fine. I hope this helps.

Hi Bob. I have fed the sound card's line input directly from the fixed
audio from my Icom 706MKII with no problems. I now use a laptop, and
use the mic input. This is because the audio transformers that I use
for isolation are 20:1, so I get some signal loss. Even with the signal
loss from these transformers, I still had enough signal to receive, but
the line in control had to be at maximum. Those who want/need to use
the mic input MUST use a 3 conductor plug (usually a stereo 1/8 inch
phone plug). If a 2 conductor plug (mono 1/8 inch phone plug) is used,
it will short out 2 contacts, and can damage the sound card.

Hi Martin. Different Icoms must use different fixed output levels I
guess. I can't drive my sound card or any other TNC I've tried over
the years with my 761. I've always had to use an op-amp circuit. The
mike input would probably work but my sound card mike input is not
very clean.

The Rigblaster provides an interface for the transmit audio and PTT or VOX
keying between the computer sound card (and optionally the serial port for PTT
keying) and the radio's mic input. You can leave the mic connected while
operating PSK (or any other mode that uses the sound card, such as SSTV, etc.)
without the audio from the mic being transmitted, and then use the mic normally
when desired.

I've had one for about a month now, and it works great. Very well made, and a
good value IMO. In fact, I'm about to order a second one. Their website is
http://www.westmountainradio.com.

No connection to the company, just a satisifed customer.
