Subject: [psk31] Kenwood TS-850 on PSK
Yesterday, I asked a question regarding supposed Kenwood modifications for
running PSK on the 850. I found the answer on the Kenwood website this
morning. There are five service bulletins for the TS-850 and the one you
want is ASB1000. While it specifically addresses use of a TNC with the 850
for packet, the problem could also occur with PSK as you are using the same
audio input to the 850, namely, Pin 11 (identified as PKD) on ACC2. It's
basically a problem of overdriving the 850 microphone amplifier, which the
PKD pin feeds. Use of a 10db attenuating pad is mentioned, along with
replacement of two chip resistors in the 850. An accompanying diagram shows
the 850 "meter" and indicates the ALC level which should not be exceeded.

I am trying to get software for PSK31 to run. Have a disc form Rigblaster
package that has 4 programs in it. Computer is 486dx, soundblaster pro
card.
digipan says sound card is already in use or is not there
winpsk31 laods but won't receive anything
logger says (its too fast to see it all) some driver is not in sound card.
The sound card works fine in the computer for other programs.
I have audio coming out of speakers on sound card, input from headphone jack
of a ten etc Corsair ll radio to computer sound card in jack.
Any idea about what is wrong???

For what it's worth, a 486 won't work well on any of these sound card
modes. You can get by with it if you use the basic G3PLX program for
psk, but most of the others are far to processor intense. I finally
gave up trying to use my 486/100 and got a cheap eMachine 333 that does
just fine. It only cost me $300 at the time and had everything needed,
nothing to add.

Subject: [psk31] 60 Hz hum
Hi,
I've been operating PSK31 for about a month now. The txcr is
an Icom IC-756 and I use the accessory jack with 1:1 audio
transformers. The schematic I used is located at
http://www.packetradio.com/sb16rads/ic8acc.gif
Last night I was operating voice and the person I was talking
to said there was a 60Hz hum in my audio. I shut down
everything in the shack except for the txcr, but the hum
was still there.
The last thing I tried was unplugging the DIN plug for my psk31
interface from the rig. The hum disappeared. What confuses
me is that my computer was powered off (although it was still
plugged into the power strip). I didn't get a chance to try it
with the DIN plug connected to the txcr and the computer
unpluged from the power strip.
All my radio equipment is connected to an RF ground, but
the computer isn't. I was wondering if anyone else has
experienced this problem.
73,
Jeff KI0RO

Dear Jeff,
You will probably find that a "ground breaker" plug will solve your problem.
Find one of these adapter plugs that takes a 3 pin plug and converts to two
pins plus a green pigtail. Use that adapter for the PC. Do not connect the
ground lug or pigtail to a house-power ground.
The problem is that there is a slight potential difference between the
house-power ground and your shack RF grounds. That potential difference
causes a small ac current to flow in circuitry that preferably would have no
ac currents. Those currents do not have to be very high to cause noticeable
hum because they are flowing in wires that are carrying only microamps of
signal current.
The above procedure works for me, but so do some other solutions, such as
using isolation transformers for all signal lines and using a direct
connection only for the PTT circuit.

I have been using a Compaq 486Dx-66 with 32 Meg Ram for PSK31 for over a
year. I have used the basic program by G3PLX, WinPsk, and DigiPan with no
trouble. You can not run Zakanaka or Logger however.

Subject: [psk31] RIGblaster, PSK31 and Laptops
There have been posts to several news groups and reflectors stating that the
RIGblaster does not work with laptops. This is not true. While the early
version of the RIGblaster had difficulties with audio from 1 particular
laptop this should not be considered an indictment of all laptops or the
RIGblaster. The current version of the RIGblaster takes into consideration
the variation of audio output in the majority of machine. Since the design
change we have not had any complaints of low audio output due to the
attenuate network design.
Invariably the problems have been due to bad audio cable, misadjusted
computer audio setting or attempting to transmit at a frequency outside the
audio band pass of the computer (e.g.: 100hz from DIGIPAN).
If there are any problems with the earlier version there is a easy field
modification. Please feel free to contact me directly for the instructions on
identifying the early models and the fix. You can also see the support page

I can attest to this. I've been using a Rigblaster with my Toshiba 320CDT
Satellite laptop with no problems whatsoever. My rig is a Kenwood TS690S.
Being a new general and new to 20 meters, my biggest problem with getting my
antenna to load up on the proper section of the band! ; - )

Dangerous and violates the National Electric Code! That ground wire is
there to keep your PC chassis from becoming hot if something shorts
inside the power supply. If you have a ground problem, fix it by using
transformers to isolate the signal grounds and, if necessary, an opto
isolator to isolate the PTT common - do not lift the safety ground
lead from your equipment.
