Split would require different vfo settings, but not different software
settings. I'd turn NET off and run the vfo split to accomplish it. The
only reason for turning NET off would be to keep YOUR tone from changing
when the other station drifts, or you tune him differently.

One hint I have not seen (sorry if I missed it) when dealing with some
laptops is that the built in microphone can sometimes only be disabled by
plugging a shorting plug into the external mic in jack. On my Toshiba, no
amount of mixer muting or other adjustments would disable it nor could I
find a setup anything that would disable the built in mic.
Once I figured out that any plug inserted into the mic in jack disabled the
built in mic the problems associated with audio from the built in mic mixing
with the line in audio went away.

That's what we call "acoustic coupling." This technique makes for a great
introduction to PSK. No wires, no connections to the receiver...just fire
up DigiPan, turn up the volume a bit on the Radio Shack short wave
receiver, and you get solid copy from someone on the other side of the
world. It makes a pretty impressive demo! (Then, if you want to really
impress them, do the above with a transceiver and hold the rig's microphone
up to your laptop's speaker and answer a CQ. For demo mode only--not a good
permanent setup.)
Let's continue spreading the good word about PSK to every ham you know.
Narrow band operations are cool! :-)

All Right guys. Lets not even go there!!!!! This is the kind of stuff
that caused me to stop reading any Amateur Radio related newsgroups back
in January! Besides, this has nothing to do with Zakanaka.
Zakanaka is a Great Program even though it is still in Beta Testing!
(Thanks Bob!!)

Congratulations, Jack! I feel the same way!
Here's something that I've found very helpful and educational: Get on the
air with a LOCAL ham on PSK. Use 2 meters simplex as a talk-frequency,
while tweaking your HF rigs on 10 meters or 30 meters, for example. You can
play with the volume controls, audio frequency settings, power levels, and
so on and get real-time instant feedback from your buddy across town.
This can serve several purposes. 1) It get's another ham on PSK. 2) It
helps you both learn about the effects of various volume settings, audio
frequency settings, and so on. And 3) it gets some activity on some bands
other than 20 meters. :-)
For example, while checking the other HF bands last week, I saw a horrible
PSK signal on 10 meters. I contacted the fella and found he was using a
Radio Shack 10 meter transceiver from about 10 miles away from me. We got
on 2-meters simplex. Turns out he was driving the rig to its full 30 watts,
with the Windows volume sliders at full scale, and operating at about 800
Hz audio with DigiPan. Yikes! Harmonics galore! I got him moved up to about
2000 Hz audio tone, volume sliders and Mic Gain to about 50%, and finally
he was putting out a clean 20 watt signal. The higher audio tone gave
profound improvement; lowered volumes and Mic Gain just reduced the power
level. I guess the sound card or the rig just couldn't send out a clean 800
Hz tone without harmonics. So, there's another vote for the recommendation
to keep it above 1500 Hz.
Anyway, I highly recommend the local 2-meter voice link to perfect your HF
PSK technique. It will help us all to put out better signals!

Is there some way to save the macros I have written for DigiPan, so I don't
have to re-enter them when I upgrade to a newer version of DigiPan?
Thanks
