Subject: [psk31] Hooking up transmit to FT1000D - how I did it
Hello: I am just going to report on how I hooked up my FT1000D, so perhaps
other guys with FT-1000D or similar might run across it.
What I did was buy an attenuation cable from Radio Shack. This one has a RAC
male on one end *which plugged into the "patch in" plug on the back of the rig),
and a 1/8 phono plug on the other.
I have no idea what the specs are on this cable, it cost about 4 dollars, and
said it was for recording. Then I inserted a adaptor from 1/8 mono phono plug
to 1/8 stereo and plugged that into a Radio Shack earphone volume control.
This has a little volume control that must be some sort of pot, and then I
plugged that into a stereo 1/8 phono plug extension cable which then plugged
into the line out on my sound card. (whew!) This actually takes longer to
explain than to do.
Anyway, putting the volume out on the sound card software up to about 75%
(which seems a little different than others had to do), and working the
earphone volume control allowed me to control the power out perfectly.
Reports on my signal have been very positive.
Thanks for everyone who gave me advice on hooking up the rig.

I use an alternate connection for my Soundblaster card and my 1000-MP.
It's simply: XMIT: Soundblaster Line Out to MP Phone patch IN.
RCVR: 1000-MP AF out to Soundblaster Line IN.
Control gain with MP front panel mic gain and/or Windows
software.
No soldering. No expensive add-on hardware. Five seconds to unscrew the mic.
Works like a charm.

For PSK31sbw, "Key up" i.e. not pushing a keyboard key, leaves the system in
transmit until F5 manually terminates the transmission.Thus the break-in
type of operation used on Morse and SSB appears to be unavailable in Peter's
program (unless I have missed something), tending to make PSK-31 closer to
old-style AM operation.
Do other PSK31programs provide break-in operation?? I realize one COULD
push F5 at the end of each sentence, but that's cumbersome. Without this
feature, PSK is uncomfortably close, in operating "feel", to AOL instant
messenger, a fact that my non-ham XYL pointed out the other evening.
My colleagues in the North Calif Contest Club (NCCC) might be also more
inclined to use PSK31 with a program optimized for break-in operation.

PSK *is* like old AM in that a signal is always transmitted. It's like RTTY
in that sense also. I don't think it lends itself to "break in" operation
because the constant injection of noise with the signal going on/off would
create many garbage characters on the other end. RTTYers often used KOS
(keyboard operated send) where the Tx keys up when the first key is
depressed but you have to manually terminate the transmission (or you have
to have a long time out so it doesn't unkey before you are finished). The
down side of this is that you cannot use type ahead with KOS (you cannot
prepare a transmission during the other station's transmission). Some people
like KOS and some do not.

Certainly the phone patch input is an alternative as is the mike input
however, as stated in earlier conversations, the advantage of the DVS port
connection is that the mike is muted during ptt otherwise whatever suits.
