Sounds like you would like the program I am interested in trying to write
for my Elecraft K2 when the computer interface for that radio becomes
available. The idea will be that you tune using the radio and the program
will send commands to QSY the radio and keep the signal at the center of
your narrow filter.

Bob,
I agree, but the typical CW filter people use is 400 or 500Hz and even that
can encompass several PSK signals if the band is busy so the problem of one
high power station preventing reception of the others will still occur.
I think high power operation is unnecessary. People who justify running high
power because they wouldn't otherwise make the contact don't consider the
other side of the coin: that by doing so they have prevented someone else
from making the contact. It turns ham radio into a rat race which is the
kind of thing some of us have hobbies to try to get away from.
Of course, this has always been the way with other modes, so why should
PSK31 be different? Well, the big attraction to me of the mode was that it
seemed to be one where running low power didn't put you at a disadvantage.
In fact I have had just as good results running 5W from my Elecraft K2 as I
have had running 40W using the FT-920. However if the "big boys" with their
beams and linears start to come on, it will go the way of all other modes
and we will need a special "QRP data" band segment.
The crux of my message is this: Not everyone can run high power. Some can't
afford linears and beams, others are prevented from putting up big antennas
and can't run high power without interfering with their neighbours. Why
can't we keep PSK31 a mode where the more disadvantaged stations can
compete on a more equal footing with others?

DigiPan is a great program, but can be used more effectively, especially
where you have a lot of stations "pulling " the AGC. Using DigiPan you often
see some very faint signal traces, when strong stations are present due to
AGC pulling. Copy on these can often be significantly improved by putting
them into the center of a narrow IF filter passband.
I have a Visual Basic piece of software that I use. I manually enter the
offset and it tunes the rig (Kachina) onto the center of the filters. You
just need to reset the Digipan freq (I keep the red line there) and walla
the 100 Hz filter can be cut in to pull that very faint line into a clear
copy!!

It's not a matter of technicalities, more of human differences.
Some people are inherently competitors, some are inherently co-operators,
and some (like me) wiffle around in between, sometimes one, sometimes the
other. (There are even some who like to handicap themselves as their form

Nothing to do with ham radio; it takes all sorts, and will stay that way.

I think we agree, Julian. I did not mean to imply that we should run
high power on PSK, only that there are other reasons for one signal to
be stronger than the others and that perhaps we should (when the rig
permits) consider the use of narrow filters. I've made a number of
solid European contacts running 5 watts on PSK with my K2. QRP and PSK
are a perfect match.

One difficulty may be the 10 Hz tuning steps of the K2. Perhaps there
can be some type of hybrid where the rig is tuned to the nearest 10 Hz
and then the DSP filters are used for fine tuning. When the DSP filter
hits the edge of a 10 Hz step, the rig is moved 10 Hz and the DSP
filter reset.

Here is a short review on the RIGblaster (rig to sound
card interface) I just received a couple days ago. I ordered
it online which was painless and "secure" from the
Westmountainradio.com www site. The following comments are only
my opinions. I have no association with West Mountain Radio.
How does it look?
The unit looks as good as its picture, the cabinet is metal
and all the connector "cutouts" are precise with clear silk
screen nomenclature, nice form and fit. Inside is a high
quality PCB assembly with soldermask and silkscreen. It is
an attractive unit that will compliment the gear you have
in the shack.
Is it easy to hook up?
So much for good looks, but does it work and is it easy to
"hook up"? Yes to both of these. Push on a few jumpers for
configuring the RIGblaster to match your radio's mic pin out
and replace the case's cover. Next, connect the sound card line
out to the RIGblaster(for MIC audio to radio)and if using
PTT, connect a standard RS232 cable to your PC's com port.
Finally, connect the RIGblaster cable to your radio's mic
connector. DC power is provided using the supplied wall wort. A
pot is accessible on the rear for adjusting the mic audio level.
Does it work?
Several sound card programs were tried and all worked
without problems. Audio level was easy to adjust, IMD
reports were good. A front panel switch allows R, L or Both
selection for line out audio to mic in. Another switch selects
either PTT or VOX operation. PTT worked fine with the programs
that required either RTS or DTR control. RIGblaster allows you
to keep you radio's mic connected for normal voice.
What about sound card line-in audio?
I would like to have seen a couple jacks for passing the radio's
speaker audio through a 1:1 transformer and out to the sound card's
line in. Also, an adjustable amplifer stage to bring up the audio
for low level receive audio typically found on the "rear" accessory
connectors of most radios would have been a nice option. Perhaps, if
the developer's receive feedback for these options, they could be
considered in future designs. I use the rear audio in/out connector on
my JRC JST-245 for a SCS PTCII, but I believe the RIGblaster could be
connected here as well.
Nitpicking...
No schematic was provided, I did not ask if one was available,
hopefully it is. The schematic is not needed for "hookup" but being a
ham, it is always nice to have around for troubleshooting. The manual
is a little sparse but provides adequate information. A "cabling"
diagram showing the connections between the radio, RIGblaster and
PC would be helpful for the first time PSKers.
Good value?
Yes. At first, the price may seem a little high but it is well made,
works "as advertised" and makes life so much "easier" for making
sound card to radio connections. It provides some nice features that
would require quite a bit of effort for most folks to duplicate. I plan
to buy another one for my second sound blasted radio.

I have asked this question so many times without a response I just don't
have it in me to type it all again. So I'll just ask how do I tune PSK 31
on my radio? People seem to have to "come to me" because I was using the
tuning knob to find them and apparently have to use the software to tune
up and down from a central frequency. How do I have any idea what
frequency anyone is on, or do we just have 1 on each band?

I agree completely about the inappropriateness of using a SSB rig for narrow
band modes.....
In fact I think that a specialised PSK31/CW rig would be a great idea.
I am working on a QRP Direct Conversion PSK31 rig. It uses an I/Q type TRX
using low pass filters to give a suitably narrow filter and a DDS LO. You
tune the RX to the center of the signal and it puts out a baseband D/C type
signal which a PIC decodes.

I have trouble accepting as valid the statement of those who justify running
high power "because they wouldn't otherwise make the contact." I know I'm
going to elicit some strong flack from that statement so please, it's just
my opinion. Wanna know why?
Up until about a year ago, most of my operation was mobile with a 706
running the standard 100 watts and a Hustler antenna. Most of that
operation was on 17 meter SSB. On many occasions I heard a DX station
calling CQ. Sometimes with a strong signal to me. Sometimes not so strong.
When I chose to "go for him", I answered his CQ and he came right back to
me. On several occasions I wasn't the only one answering his call. Yet,
rarely did it take me more than on call. Would a linear have helped? Would
it have helped him hear me better? Maybe. Fact was, he heard me and made
no complaints. Furthest DX contact: Japan.
Recently the Clipperton crew ran their very popular operation working
through some pretty heavy pileups. With my modest equipment and nothing to
call DXing experience I decided to have a go at it. Just my 100 watts into
a multiband vertical on SSB. So, I hit the pileups. Got him on every band.
Rarely taking more than 4 or 5 calls through the pileup. I don't consider
myself a DX expert, so I know no special tricks to break pileups.
I'd be more than willing to bet that the bulk of those in the pileups were
running much more power and even with bigger antennas.
No I think that in many cases the argument for a linear is something akin to
the neighbor I used to have across the street who used to fire up his super
turbocharged, loud, big enough to do a golf course lawn tractor to do the
lawn on his 70X120 foot lot. I'd swear he had chromed stacks on the thing.
Will I ever own a linear? I'm pragmatic enough not to say "never", but to
date, I've not had too many I could not work if I could hear them. If I
can't hear them, well, what's the point?

Make sure the PSK program's NET is turned on and the rig's RIT is
turned off. This should ensure that your Tx frequency is the same as
your receive frequency. After establishing the contact, if the two of
you seem to be walking up or down the band then *one* of you should
turn NET off. Turn AFC on so that the PSK program can fine tune and
track a slightly drifting signal. Tune the signal in so that it is
centered on the waterfall and you have copy. When you transmit you
should be exactly on his frequency. Note: if the above does not work,
it is possible that the transceiver has a calibration problem and the
Tx and Rx frequencies are slightly different even with RIT turned off.
As far as the rig's Tx/Rx frequency, the dial reads suppressed carrier
frequency. Assuming you're running in USB mode and using a 1000 Hz PSK
tone, just add 1000 Hz to the dial reading to get the actual Tx/Rx RF
frequency.

Last summer my Kenwood TS50 was destroyed by a lightning strike. I will be
replacing it this week with another. I have my cabling and isolators built
and
tested for the TS50. In the mean time I have been listening on 10 m using
the new
Radio Shack HTX-10 rig. I took the rig apart and was unable to tell what the
pins
of the mike cable did. I left ALL of my test equipment on my boat down in SC
and
an unable to test this rig for PSK31. I am going to install connectors in the
case
for PTT and audio in, but am unable to discover what goes where. Has anyone
already done this? Could you pass the data on to the rest of us?

OK, so I didn't have any test equipment at home, but I did have a set of
eyeballs
and a soldering iron. I took the mike apart, drew the schematic and trace the
signals to the DIN connector. Here it is:
Looking at the end of the mike cable din connector, the pins are labeled 1 to
6
starting with 1 on the upper right and counting clockwise around with pin 6
being the center.
5 1
4 6
3 2
1 is WHITE and is the microphone output
2 is RED and is the SPEAKER GROUND for the audio system which is why the
speaker will not work unless the mike is plugged in!
3 is BLUE and is the PTT key and a ground here will cause rig to transmit
4 is BLACK and is the UP/DOWN function, down is ground and up is +v
5 is SHIELD and is ground
6 is BROWN and is the +MIKE supply
There is enough room inside the mike case to install a 1/8" stereo socket so
that
you can bring audio in and key in for PSK control. You can take audio out
from
the socket on the back of the rig. You can also put a socket in the rig case
to do
the same thing and solder the wires to the mike DIN male socket on the back
but
remember that the numbers will be reversed there.
While this rig has not IF shift or filters installed it works very good on
PSK31. I
have been playing with it in the receive only mode for 2 days now and have
been
very pleased with its capabilities.

Hello Trevor, I think "Happy Australia",
where Pactor are constricted to a narrow band.
Here on the other side of the world, however it seems to be different from
it. It is regardless if I am working (30 watts into a delta loop) in CW,
PSK31, RTTY or HELL, it is all the same. It does not last for a long time
and I have a PACTOR on my frequency, independent of the band including the
WARCs. Usually with a field strength which flattens the whole spectrum or
waterfall display, like a pumping cockchafer in my neck.
I believe there is certainly no difference whether one works on 14070-
14072 or another frequency.
Does somebody know a PACTOR-free qrg in order to be able to work without
interference?

To all PSKers,
This message is not about MixW32 so I hope you wont mind me introducing a
discussion about band plans which should be of interest to PSKers.
In Australia 14070- 14080 is allocated to Pactor , Amtor etc, and these
stations are on 24hrs a day and STRONG at this QTH. So nearly everyday I
have to give up trying to work PSK due to these stations.
Our RTTY band is 14080-14095 and therfore I would suggest that this is a
far better area in which to work - one very rarely hears RTTY stations
except during contests.And it is a similar type of mode.
I dont know what the band plans are in other countries but I would hope
they would be the same .
I know that RTTY is roughly the same in most but I have no idea about
Pactor etc.
So , what do you think ?
