Subject: [psk31] PSK31 bandplans again.

From G3PLX

This subject comes up again and again. 14070-14080 is NOT allocated
to Pactor/Amtor etc. either in Australia or anywhere else. There has
been talk by the PACTOR mailbox operators of a "gentleman's
agreement", but no-one has ever seen a copy of it or identified the
gentlemen who signed it.

The real problem is that the PACTOR stations do not listen before
transmitting and therefore are completely incompatible with
one-to-one RTTY (and I include PSK31) operations where
listening-before-transmitting is well-established practice.

This incompatibility has long been recognised by the IARU, and a note
to the 20m bandplan recommends operation which doesn't listen before
transmitting to take place in the top half of the RTTY band, that is,
between 14089 and 14112 (with a gap for the beacons). The Packet
operators have always respected this. The FCC, a few years ago,
strengthened this principle further by ruling that mailboxes which
transmit without warning should operate in a sub-section of the top
of the RTTY bands. Unfortunately an escape clause got into the rule
and all PACTOR activity has "escaped" through the loophole which
permitted narrow-band mailboxes which "respond to calls" to operate
anywhere. Unfortunately the interference caused to live operators by
narrow-band respond-only mailboxes is still severe.

There is still a strong principle that unattended operation of
digital stations should take place in the top half of the 20m RTTY
band. The fact that PACTOR mailboxes use 14070-14080 means that
THREE-QUARTERS of the RTTY band is used by unattended mailboxes.

I have written to QST proposing that the FCC rule which constrains
mailboxes up at the top end should be strengthened. Not just to
constrain ALL unattended operation above 14089, but to actually
recognise for the first time that unattended stations CAN transmit
without listening, so that live operators who stray into the mailbox
sub-band will NOT be able to complain if they get hit by a mailbox.
Hopefully this proposal will gain acceptance from both sides,
worldwide and not just in USA, and we can make some progress. Only by
accepting that mailbox and live-QSO operations are completely
incompatible and forcibly separating them can we solve this problem
once and for all.

Bob,

Too right a beam is not always an option. Like most G stations I have a
small garden and would not get permission to erect a tower and beam. You
can see it and the antenna I have to work with on my web page. But the
difference a linear makes is less than 2 S-points. If they can't hear you
without the linear they won't copy you much better with it. The main
trouble, in my opinion, is caused by people with beams who would be putting
out a big signal in any case but still insist on running high power. It may
get them a few more contacts, but how many other people *lose* contacts as
a result?

Read this great article on psk31 in QST. Said to myself this is for me to
try. Has anyone the dope on connecting up an ICOM 735. Perhaps using the
acc 1 connection. I am going to down load DIGIPLAN. Would like to hear

Hi Joe:
Welcome to PSK31 mode. I will address some of your concerns as best that I can.
I do not use DigiPan for my PSK31 operation, so, I hope my comments hold true
for your use of DigiPan.

When decoding BPSK, it does not matter which sideband position your radio is
using. If you were to switch to USB, you should still be able to decode BPSK
signals (unless Digipan does not allow this). However, with QPSK, USB is needed
or a REVERSAL/INVERT by software is needed for proper decoding.

I use a FT1000D here on PSK31, FeldHell and RTTY with the soundcard as an
interface.

Unless you have sufficient amplitude control of the soundcard output audio
level, the attenuation is required when using the PATCH IN jack on your FT1kD
radio. If
you trace the signal path from the PATCH IN and also trace from the MIC
connectoron the schematic diagram, you will find that the signal reaches the
samemicrophone preamplifier transistor stage, in an almost identical manner.

I apply the output from my soundcard via a fixed ratio resistive voltage divider
to the PATCH IN jack on my radio. I use a 100 to 1 attenuation ratio made with
100k and 1k fixed-value resistors; I dont believe that impedance matching is a
critical issue.

That preamplifier stage is expecting an audio level input via a station
microphone or perhaps from a telephone mouth piece. In both cases, the expected
amplitude is approximately 20 millivolts. The output from a LINE jack on a
soundcard is, on the otherhand, in the order of 2 Vrms. The gain provided by the
microphone preamplifier stage is fixed, thus, the need to avoid overdriving that
preamplifier stage by use of an attenuator/voltage divider. (2 Vrms applied via
a 100 to 1 attenuator/voltage divider will result in approximately 2x1/100= 0.02
Vrms , or 20 millivolts.)

You will surely need to adjust the amplitude output from your soundcard by use
ofthe Windows98 mixer software. Without the use of an voltage divider, it is
morelikely that the range of adjustment provided by the software mixer controls
will
not be adequate to prevent/avoid overdrive of the radio's mic preamp stage.

Basically, LINE IN and LINE OUT amplitude levels are in the order of 2 Vrms (see
the specs for your own soundcard), whereas the microphone input is designed to
receive a much lower amplitude audio signal level; approximately 20 mVrms
(similar to the transmitter microphone preamplifier stage in you FT1000D radio).
To the best of my knowledge, each jack connector on a soundcard is of the stereo
(tip, ring, body) type. Even the soundcard's mic jack is a stereo ckt
connector;however, that connector should not be in use.

You will have to pay attention to the Balance slider controls within the
Windows98 soundcard mixer software when setting up for proper audio amplitude
levels (both for transmit as well as for receive).

> 5. Should I set my sideband offset to zero, so the freq reads true?

It is not clear to me what you mean by this? Perhaps this is a Digipan
issue....
Whenever using your soundcard software, the RX-CLAR and TX-CLAR LEDs on the
FT1000D radio should not be lit The software includes AFC functionality. BTW,
the speech PROC on the FT1000D radio should (must) also be disabled.

Whenever I use PSK31/FeldHell/RTTY, my voice/SSB radio station microphone is
disconnected from the FT1kD and my PC's Internet/Speaker telephone microphone is
disconnected from the soundcard input. This avoids undesirable modulation from
these microphones. Also, I enable the MONItor function on the FT1kD radio so
thatI can hear my own decoded PSK31 tones via the FT1kD's internal speaker.
Furthermore, I use isolation transformers in the rcvd and the xmitr LINEs here,
because of apparent ground loop problems, but that is another story...

I hope that this information is a help to you Joe. Things have worked well for
me and I think will also work well for your FT1kD setup. Good luck.

It does if both stations are running an amp. I'm not pushing amps
here - I don't even own one at the moment. However, there are times
such as trying to overcome noise on 160, 75, or 40 Meters where an amp
can help out. The key is to use the amp only when it is needed (and
there are times like that).

Reciprocity generally holds, that is, two stations radiating the
same power will have the same signal strength to each other. There
are exceptions due to local conditions etc., but generally that
holds true. So, when you hear a station who is just barely above
noise level and he is running a KW ERP (includes antenna gains and
transmission line losses etc.), and you go back to him with 100W
or less ERP, he probably won't hear you. Is there anyone here
going to claim that they have never had that experience? But, go
back to him with a KW ERP and he'll likely get you just barely
above noise level, assuming of course that the noise levels are
about the same. No booming signals but you're talking.

Someone mentioned the Cliperton Island DXpedition earlier. I
worked them on several bands and modes too using 100W (I didn't
have a linear then), but only at times when their signal to me was
at least an S4. At times when they were weaker than that, jumping
into the pile up with 100W was a waste of time. They, and most all
DXpeditions run KW's across the board. Why? Well, would you go to
all the expense and trouble to take a trip like that and then
limit your capabilities for the lack of a linear? I don't think
so. They took one low power rig to run PSK with and made a total
of 4 contacts with that rig. Enough said, I think we have beat
this horse to death, and I see that there are two camps who may as
well just agree to disagree.

Sometimes I feel like firing up my linear,
sometimes I work my QRP rig. Sometimes
I work SSB, sometimes I work PSK or CW.
I'm glad I have the freedom to run whatever
kind of rig I want to!

By the way, a 16-gauge shotgun is a BIG

I wonder HOW an Amplifier can "help" you hear more if you are the one using

I realize that many Amps also have "reciever" preamps which may "help" or
just increase the noise floor..

When a "local" comes on with their KW about all you can do is go for
another band... I think its called selectivity...
