Many years ago when I used to hunt, I used a single barrel 16 gauge shot
gun. My philosophy was, If I couldn't get what I was shooting at with the
first shot, they deserved to get away.
I feel much the same about linear amplifiers. I have never owned one but I
have no animosity toward those who do but in most cases, I feel like a
linear is over kill. If I can't make the contact with 100 watts maximum and
a good antenna, I probably didn't need to be there anyway.
I have seen people go out and spend $1000 for a TV set then put a $3 rabbit
ear antenna on top of it. Many Hams do the same, try to compensate for a
poor antenna set up with more power.
Just one guy's opinion.

Subject: RE: [psk31] How do I tune PSK31?
The procedure for tuning in PSK varies with the software you are
using. But, most programs have an AFC checkbox or button so that
it is only necessary for you get close with your rx and the
software will do the last little bit of fine tuning for you.
Programs with the waterfall display, such as DigiPan, allow you to
click on any signal within your passband and it will tune it in
for you. With "net" on, it will also lock the transmit frequency
to the receive frequency. Do not use RIT or XIT as this will make
it impossible for the software to lock receive and transmit
frequencies. I like to use upper sideband and keep the audio tone
around 2KHz. This keeps my very narrow IF CW filters within the
range of my passband tuning. So, I normally get as close as I can
with the receiver dial then click with the mouse for the last few
Hz of fine tuning. Others like to leave their receiver filtering
wide open and just click to tune. The problem with that is that a
strong signal within the rx passband will pull your agc and
perhaps attenuate the weaker signal you are trying to copy. Good,
narrow, tunable, IF passband filters eliminate that problem.

I guess the RIGblaster is OK for those that do not want to pick up a few
parts (less than $10) and "do it yourself", but I think it is a mistake
to provide soundcard interface only to the mic and speaker jacks. I find
it much better to get the fixed level TX and RX audio from the 13 pin
rear connector on my IC706MkII. That way you just set the levels with
the soundcard program and leave it alone. Many other radios have a
similar input/output facility, not using the mic and speaker jacks.

Hi Dan. You jusy stated my opinion almost perfectly. I have had
similar experiences using a modest vertical antenna, and several rigs
over the years that I have been licensed. I have always felt that a
better antenna beats an amplifier any day. I also have a question of
those using an amplifier (on any mode). Do you try to make the contact
without the amplifier first? I will not say that I will never own an
amplifier (though at the present time, I do not feel that I need one)
but should I have one in the future, it will not see much use.
The opinions expressed here are my own, and I will not respond to
flames!

Hello Dieter. It does seem to me that I see a lot of pactor stations
recently, right on the recommended PSK calling frequencies. I don't
remember this being the case until about a month or so ago. I seem to
remember finding the pactor stations a few KHZ up the bands.

Yes. Good conditions, making solid contacts easily with 25 watts,
no need for power. Poor conditions, calling CQ endlessly with no
answer, let's try a little power and see if that helps. Sometimes
it does, sometimes it doesn't. If signals are passing through the
ionosphere and into space, higher power will only make the signal
stronger on Mars. But, when absorption is the problem, a little
more power may help.
There is also another situation. That is, the amp is on we make a
contact and get a 59 signal report, cut it back, we don't need it.
I hope everyone using an amp operates that way and I hope it helps
ease some of the fears about the use of higher power ruining PSK.

Duane,
Very good thoughts. At least I think so.
One thing that this discussion has neatly circumvented is
the guideline that we should only use as much power as is
required to establish communications.
You could load 2kw into a 'rabbit ears' antenna and still
not establish the communications you want.
I have always thought that anyone buying and using a linear
before getting a beam, is in need of therapy.

MOST (RIGS) RADIOS THAT HAMS USE BUILT IN THE LAST 25/30 YEARS WILL GO TO
100 WATTS.
IF 100 WATTS DOESN'T DO IT AN AMP WILL NOT EITHER. THIS IS PSK NOT SSB,
RTTY NOR ANY OTHER WIDE BAND MODE. ALL AN AML DOES IS CREATE PROBLEMS.
THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE, IF ONE CAN ACCEPT SIMLE ANSWERS, LINEAR AMPLIFIERS
DON'T HELP.
DESPITE OPINIONS EXPRESSED TO ME PRIVATELY. I HAVE YET FOUND A REASON TO
EXCEED 85 WATTS ON PSK.

What if he's working 160, 75 or 40 meters? What if he has a small lot
or antenna restrictions? A beam is not always an option.

Subject: [psk31] new to list and need help
Hello: Name here is Joe, N8TI. I heard about PSK31, and decided to try it
today using digipan. What a great mode!
I have some basic questions and I wonder if you guys can help me out:
1. What are the "calling frequencies" for psk31 on each band, 160 through 10
meters?
2. I noticed that I heard everyone on LSB on 20 meters. What is the
sideband that people use for each frequency, if it is not LSB all the time?
3. I just Listened today, but want to hook up output from my FT-1000D.
Now, the help information on the digipan software says you should make up an
attenuator with a couple of resistors so you can feed directly into the
microphone. But, the help information also states that if you have some sort
of advanced mic input, you don't have to use the attenuator. I have a plug
on the back of my FT1000 which is called "patch in." The FT-1000 manual
states that the patch in plug is a mic plug that mixes with the mic input
from the front mic plug, and the FT1000 manual states that the input
impedance is 500-600 ohms.
Could I just plug into that patch in plug directly? What if I lowered my
output on my sound card, or would I still have too much microvolts going into
the FT-1000?
4. I used a stereo plug into the output on my sound card and a stereo plug
into the phone jack on my radio to get the output to the computer sound card.
With the input, is the computer sound card input a stereo or mono. I am
afraid that I don't know what a line input or output really is on the
computer. By the way, I am running a fairly new computer using windows 98.
5. Should I set my sideband offset to zero, so the freq reads true?
Thanks a lot in advance for this information. 73, Joe. N8TI
