Hi psk31 and hellschreiber friends,
May you are not interested in CW yet, I share my last adventure with you
with the dx T88JU though. Yesterday after attempting to make a contact with
the station in question for 10 min without any success, I launched psk31sbw
and called him on the pile-up with the cw option of the program. I was
responded for the first trial! It could have been chance, but more possibly
the flute-like waveform of the transmitted signal made itself heard among
the sharp loud competitors.
I have first time been hearing (and seeing) someone to operate on split
frequency to eliminate callers' interference in psk31 mode. BQ9P was that
and as I noticed, he could have achieved even higher rate if the callers
spreaded around the suggested 0.5 kHz split freq.
Finally, a new land would have been realised with FM5BW at 21:05, the only
nuisance was the missing RST or report. I tried two programs to get better
reception from Bob, without any success. The signal was probably distorted
by magnetic disturbance and looked asymmetric on the display and with tens
of Hertz of frequency drifting. The contact needs to be repeated for a value.

Hi,
Just a few obs to share:
I am in Connecticut (fn31oo) and see many
sigs showing flutter (UT???) over the pole
that are very hard to copy even if they are
strong. One of the downsides of phase-shift
modes.
I worked into ZS at 0300 on 4/11 and we were
both pretty surprised. We traded weak but
copyable reports. This would have been
impossible (IMHO) on any other mode except CW.

Subject: [psk31] Soundblaster Live Xmit Problem
I'm using a Yaesu 1000-MP ... soundcard out to phone patchin ... and ext
speaker out to sound card line in.
I can receive perfectly.
But unless I mute the line-in in Control Panel, the receiver audio is
fed back thru transmit.
I get a howl on transmit that sounds like feedback, but may be a ground
loop.
Thus, I am unable to transmit PSK-31.
Has anyone found a way around this? Or a better hook-up?

Subject: [psk31] WinPsk/TS-450 S
Hi !
I am new to this PSK31 mode and I am looking for som help to get my Kenwood
TS-450 S connected fro TX to my ESS Solo-1 soundcard.
I have connected a cable from the ext.speaker on the back of the TS-450 S to
the Line in on the soundcard, and that works fine for RX, but what do I have
to do to get it work on TX also ?
Anyone that could help ?

It's not really the downside of PSK but the downside of using narrow
bandwidth. Using FSK with the same bandwidth (MSK in fact) would give
the same level of distortion over the pole as PSK31 does.
Basically the polar path is spread in frequency. The only way to be
able to use such a path is by using a spectrum width that is wider
than the propagation spread itself. In other words, go back to almost
any of the modes that were in use before PSK31 arrived. CW works in
this situation ONLY if you receive it in a bandwidth that is as wide
as the Doppler spread.
If this sounds like a defect in PSK31, then just think about it from
a different viewpoint: PSK31 is a mode that allows you to use
frequency-stable paths down to much lower signal levels than the
other modes. If there are some paths that are not stable enough for a
few percent of the time, that shouldn't worry us as radio amateurs.
Amateur radio has traditionally been about getting the best contacts
in the best conditions, not about always getting through in the worst
conditions.

Subject: [psk31] Soundblaster Live TX Solved!
Thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions on fixing my TX
problem with my 1000-MP and the Soundblaster Live card.
To receive, I changed the audio out hookup from the MP's external
speaker jack, to the AF out jack, turned down all the gains, and the
feedback's gone!
The soundcard audio out is hooked up to the MP's phone patch jack for
Xmit.
I'm using the DigiPan software and had my first PSk QSO with KB9UEZ
within the hour.
