Hello:

Finally got Digipan and PSK31 running on my Kenwood TS-570S/G

The interface was the real problem.  Some tips for anyone building one:

1. Radio Shack DB-9 shells are plastic but are coated with a conductive 
finish!!  If you install the PTT circuit inside the shell, be sure to cover 
it with electrical tape first, or the parts will short out and switch your 
rig to transmit mode as soon as you plug it in.

2. The 13 pin DIN connector that comes with the 570 or the aftermarket ones 
you can get all have the problem of having the metal shell short to the wires 
or the ground sheath.  Try wrapping the back end of the connector block in 
electrical tape.  Cover the pins and the wires for about 3/8" back of the 
block.  Use care and even some lubricant to get the outer plastic shell on 
the metal case.  If it is too stiff or tight, you are probably bunching the 
wires up against the shell and the connector block.  For 3 separate shielded 
cables, you will need to cut out a bigger hole in the back of the plastic cove
r.

3. The microphone input to your computer can be easily tamed with the 
adjustable volume control sold at Radio Shack to tame the volume on Walkman 
headphones used in other applications.  It plugs between the computer mic 
input and the cable to your 570 ACC2 audio out.

Don, thanks for the reply.

I've been using an audio cable from the headphone jack on the front of the
unit to the computer audio input.  A cable from audio output on the computer
to the ACC(1) jack.  No PTT.  I've generated a number of questions, hope you
might be able to shed some light:

1.  Do you know if I can take the audio output from the 725 off the ACC(1)
jack?  The manual shows pin 4 as tip and pin 2 as shield (ground)?  These
pins are labeled as AFSK output.

2.  I have used the May 99 circuit (isolation transformer & trimmer) to feed
input to the radio on ACC (1).  I connected tip to pin 5 (AF Input) and
shield (i believe) I connected to pin2 (AFSK ground).  The manual shows I
guess the shroud on the DIN connector as ground but I know I did not connect
to that.  Can you tell me what pins you connected to for input to the 725?

3.  Using the May 99 circuit, I seem to get output and a friend of mike
successfully copied via Digipan my signal but he was only 2 miles away.  I
do not ever see any forward power needle movement on the MFJ tuner.  I have
not been able to connect with anyone else.  The May 99 circuit shows a 47K
POT and I have had some folks suggest 1K or less.  Did you use the exact
components noted in the article?

4.  If I use a straight audio cable (no circuit wired in) to feed input to
the 725, then I definately get a power output reading on the forward power
needle of the tuner.  However, the red TX light on the front of the 725
tends to "pulse" with about a 1 sec. frequency between pulses.  It will glow
bright red, dim down, glow again, etc.  I am thinking this means the ALC is
kicking in but I'm not sure.  Do you have any ideas about this condition?  I
have not had the chance to try to connect to anyone in this arrangement as
it got too late and 10M was dead.

5.  I would also like to use the PTT feature.  Can I assume then that you
fed input on ACC(1) with pin 3?  Where does ground go (pin 2 again?).

6.  To recap this business, it looks like maybe:
         Pin 4 audio output from 725 to computer
         Pin 2 ground for audio output
         Pin 2 ground for audio input
         Pin 2 ground for PTT
         Pin 5 audio input to 725 from computer
         Pin 3 PTT

7.  All this implies using the ACC(1) jack for input/output and PTT.  Is
this what you did or did you use different combinations of jacks?

I really appreciate any feedback you might have.  I'm 100% unsure that I
know what I'm doing and adding the uncertainty of which pins to use just
makes it worse.

I wonder if anyone knows what causes the weird bending effect that I
noticed tonight at around 7:30PM EST. Signals bend both to the right and
left in the display and one bent left and then curled to the right!  My
son and I both took notice of it while in QSO.  It is NOT a problem with
receiver stability!
