HI,
ARE YOU SAYING THAT BY YOUR TURNING DOWN YOUR VOLUME ON YOUR TRANSCVR., THE
BAD SIGNALS WERE NO LONGER BAD AND NO LONGER APPEARED THAT WAY?
I GUESS MY PROBLEM WOULD THEN BE TO;
1. REDUCE MY TRANSCVR. VOL.
2. DON'T USE THREE OTHER PROGRAMS TO CHECK
3. STOP USING A SCOPE.
4. DON'T LISTEN TO THE SIGNALS ON MY SPEAKER AT ALL TO HEAR THE DISTORTION
5 THESE AND PERHAPS ONE OR TWO OTHERS WILL CURE THEIR OVERDRIVE?
WOW!, THAT'S SO EASY. I SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THOSE SOLUTIONS AND ALL MY
DISAPPOINTMENT WOLD GO AWAY. WOW!

all I am saying is that by having the receive from the rig high you can
make them appear very bad on the display, try it once.
But seeing as you use 3 programs and a scope to check them out I guess you
should be the one to tell them then...

You're exactly right. Distortion can be introduced anywhere in the
signal chain and that includes the receiver. With signals S5 or
better, I find a significant change in IMD due to receiver AGC action.
Slow AGC gives much better IMD readings than fast AGC on my IC-761.

THAT IS EXACTLY MY POINT, AMONG OTHERS, WE SHOULD ALL BE TELLING THEM; NOT
JUST AN ISOLATED FEW, I.E. BIG MOUTH ME.
I DID USE THE ATTENUATOR ON MY TS-870. BAD STAYS BAD.

Gordon,
Don't worry, Harvey was the one who told me
about my bad signal. But, guess what?
He was right! I had a ground loop.

Hello all.
I am sending this on behalf of another amateur who is not on the internet.
He would like to start using PSK, and wonders if he can use it with his
FT101ZD, using the VOX to trigger TX.
Has anyone successfully done it with this rig, please?
If so, can you give me some information to pass on to him?
Many thanks

Hi All
This is my last word on the subject, Harvey is right a bad signal is
still a bad signal, and they should be helped right away.
No where in my posting is there anything that says if you turn down your
receive it will make a already bad one good, I did say you can make a good
one look bad, by having to much receive from the rig.. I will still take an
extra look at my own station, before I tell some one of their signal
quality.
Thanks Gordon.

I'll add,
If distortion is introduced at the receiving end, it will be ahead of the
scope or analyzing software. Of course, the attenuator Harvey mentioned
guarantees an undistorted reception, but I also agree that extra care is
needed when criticizing another station's signal.
