Ken,
I have an Icom-728 (probably uses the same/similar ACC connector pinouts)
and use the ACC1 connector for Audio Out, Audio In, and PTT. It wasn't
that hard to set up the PTT line with my laptop's serial port. This
gives the PSK programs complete control over the transmit (not relying on
VOX), and I don't have to worry about transmitting background sounds, WAV
files, and so forth. You've spent good money on a good radio, so don't
cut corners now. (Plus, I can then also use my laptop for SSTV and other
digital modes.)
And like Robbie posted, previous discussions have indicated that the
Icom's audio in on ACC1 does not appear to be wired through the VOX
circuit. (That would be easy enough to try out for yourself before going any
further.)
