Just to set the record straight and make sure everybody is "up to date"
here, Mouser does not stock JST (Japan Soldeless Terminal) connectors. JST
was the OEM for the Icom 24-pin accessory jack. Icom in fact discontinued
the JST part for the 720A within the last 12 months, I spoke to them about
this 2 weeks ago. I haven't tried to order one for the 751A, although I
realized after I hung up the phone that its the same connector and its
possible that they discontinued the part number but not the part (i.e., its
tagged with a different number for the 751A and is still available).
JST connectors are available here, but not from Mouser or the other usual
suspects. Molex connectors, on the other hand, are obviously widely
available, so the question is whether the Molex fits well-enough to be
serviceable. The Molex connectors are definitely different than the JST
connectors. People who have tried to make Molex connectors work with the JST
6-pin panel mount power connectors have given mixed reviews and I've never
heard from anyone who has actually used the Molex 24-pin with the 24-pin JST
panel mount. Has anyone who has actually used the Molex connector on the
24-pin Icom accesssory socket care to comment?

Since neither mode is "experimental", is it not true that both modes should
move.If you can quote a published band plan that specifies that the band edge is
assigned for experimental modes, then it seems that the packet people would
want to move, unless they want to continue to consider their mode still
experimental.
I heard that QST may be planning to publish a chart showing a detailed band
plan. Perhaps they could help negotiate a resolution. I would suspect that
whatever they publish would be followed by the community.
If their chart shows that 14070 is assigned for experimental modes, end of
discussion.
Peter, I suggest that you contact them and ask for help.

Thank you, Neal, for the info on the 24 pin plug that is needed for the ICOM
751A accessory connector.
Here is some additional information that you might find useful.
The Mouser catalog shows a MOLEX connector,
Mouser cat.# 538-03-06-2242 which is a 24 pin Free Hanging Plug with Detent
Locking Window for $1.32 each.
This is the plug that I have successfully used on my rig and was available from
Mouser recently.

Just a clarification...
What we will probably publish in the near future is a chart of frequencies
vs US license privileges. We've had many requests to do this in the wake of
license restructuring here in the States. This chart does not address
bandplans. We generally do that in the "Considerate Operators Frequency
Guide" which is published in the January issues of QST.

For you purists, the Icom - OEM 24-pin plug mystery is solved. Icom
discontinued the kit, not the individual component parts. The OEM (JST)
connector and the pins are still available from Icom parts. I guess you've
just got to ask the right questions.
Connector - Part #93602666; $1.74 ea.
Pins - Part #93602725; $0.20 ea.
Spring clamp - ?? (they're checking.

Hard to believe that you haven't heard one on the air yet...the Icom IC756PRO
has been available for purchase in the US for almost three weeks. Heard a
few on the air and the audio quality is full and clear. I've sold a couple
already and the intial reports are that this is THE radio...surpasses all
others in DSP performance, flexibility and ease of use. Totally adjustable
DSP IF filtering can be set as narrow as 50Hz in the SSB mode. Perfect for
psk31! I think that's what the Icom engineers had in mind when they designed
this one. Just thought you might like the update. 73!

Purists!?
Appologies in advance to anyone who might take offense but I
have to get this off my chest. I used to have a great deal
of (possibly undeserved respect) for ICOM products.
Until... until I became the 'proud' owner of and IC-255A.
The IC-255A is the only reference I have regarding ICOM
products, but I have to tell you it is a 'real piece of
work'! Monkeys in the darkest part of Africa could have
done a better job!
It looks like a very professional attempt at delivering a
two meter radio until you open it up. Its a maze of
soldered wire interconnects that are rivaled only by the
output connection. Antenna output is soldered directly to
the PCB!. No provision is made for normal connector creep
caused by normal usage...i.e. attaching the antenna to the
output. Result is that the connection fails after a few
uses.
I would not wish this attrocity on my worst enemy, and would
not consider ICOM as qualified for any equipment I would
care to spend my money on. Of course this is base on my bad
experiences with the IC-255A. I am sure that ICOM has
improved considerably since then. I will believe that right
after they fix my IC-255A.
My appologies in advance to ICOM enthusiasts. May your
experiences be supperior to mine.
