Harvey,
Unfortunately, life is never simple, and there is no free lunch :-) Sound
cards are notoriously noisy (high-signal-to noise ratio at output) when
operated a low output levels, and the method you are suggesting can led to
a noisy signal with some cards. It is far 'safer' to run the sound card
output at a high (usually normal) output level and then reduce the level to
the mic input with a resistor attenuator used in conjunction with an
isolation transformer. This setup has been published in many places, and
is the time-tested, accepted method of achieving proper drive levels. This
method will always work, and the overall drive level is easily adjustable
if a 10-turn pot is used for the attenuator.

Dear Andy and Fellow Warblers,
No mystery there, Andy. PSK31 is a mode that does not tolerate harmonics of the
modulation frequency - it's the very thing that we are talking about when we
refer to someone's signal being raw, wide, high in IMD, or whatever.
For SSB voice, however, a little ALC compression gives your signal "body" and
oomph.
Stick to the accepted criteria for the mode - no ALC is GOOD on PSK31.

Some sound cards will "flat top" the PSK signal if you run
them too high so you've got to watch that too. Between 1/3
and 2/3 of full scale seems to be a good setting with the
cards I've worked with. You also want to be sure that the
rig's mike gain control is set about the same as for your
mike. If you have to turn your mike gain nearly all the way
down to prevent ALC then you risk overdriving the preamp
stages in the transmitter.

Subject: [psk31] Wide Tuning Display
I accidentally started a debate on the Logger reflector when I jokingly made
a screen shot of what Logger would look like with a DigiPan style tuning
display. Judging by the private email I received, there are strong opinions
on booths sides of the issue, some love wide displays and some hate 'em.
I certainly agree that the guys that write all this great software are free
to incorporate a display that suits their needs. Logger is a great product
and its PSK section is very nicely put together.
I have used DigiPan this week, and find the wide display quite useful,
however I'm not so sure that it's not the PSK version of crack-cocaine,
eventually all I'll be able to do is point and click and loose the ability
to actually turn the dial and find my own signals! The anti-wide display
email I received generally pointed out that since PSK is a narrow mode and
that we should be well satisfied with the 250 or 500 Hz display, especially
since our radio's filter are close to that width.
I have been very satisfied with Logger. PSK31SBW, and others when on 14070
since I am usually there to chat with whomever is around. This weekend I
was a tad bored and wanted to try find countries I have not worked on PSK31.
DigiPan really does make this easier.
As I am typing this , there is a general PSK warbling sound that has melded
into one, there may be more than one signal but my ears just hear one. The
500 Hz display actually says there are 2 stations, within 2000 Hz on DigiPan
there are 7 stations (hopefully no harmonics!).
I guess I could find them all on a 500 Hz display with retuning, I have
done this for many months without a problem. My poor old brain has
difficulty remembering who is who when I tune up and down the PSK spectrum.
Is that signal the one I tuned in 1 minute ago, or is it rare DX just
firing up ? The crack-cocaine part of DigiPan is that my brain processes
the panoramic scope a better, I can do a better job of remembering who owns
what waterfall vapor trail.
Just some thoughts, see how spoilt I have become ? I was quite happy with
one waterfall and no buffers at one time!

Well I guess I never considered that the power levels would be so high but
you're absolutely correct -- in no case should you exceed the 1/2 power
point of key down -- in most instances however, this is even too high as the
measurements on my home page will attest
(http://web2.airmail.net/w5tx/psk31/). In my experience as shown in the
referenced measurements about 30 watts of psk31 idle average power is about
right for a 100 watt rig. Less won't hurt!

just monitoring 14.068-14.080Mhz and have been successful in tuning in a few

I'm not sure but I think your process is a little backwards. I would adjust
per the following
1. Set rig power output to maximum (carrier control).
2. Adjust the audio input level to obtain the desired power output.
This provides the maximum head room for peak signal levels which keeps the
distortion down. In any case would still be around 10-30 watts for a 100
watt rig. It may be different for different rigs depending upon how the
carrier control (power output) is accomplished.
