Subject: [psk31] Weak signal DXing.
In conducting a recent demo of PSK31, I tried to demonstrate how well PSK31
does in copying weak signals. However I had difficulty finding a truly weak
signal, 20 M was full of S3 and above PSK signals. I looked on 40M and
could not find any signals at all. I forgot to check 10 Meters but should
have since my experience on 10 last night indicates that a dying 10M band
is what PSK is for!
I tuned in 10M around 0200 using DigiPan's wide tuning display (easier to
spot signals that the ear could not). I then worked several JA'a and a VK5
all at extremely low signal levels on my low hung G5RV. Not one signal
moved my S meter from it's S-0 position, the JA's were not audible to ear
but gave 100% copy on the screen. While this is a familiar case with PSK31,
I thought I would remind folks that there is there is more to PSK than 14070
. QRP and PSK are made for each other!

Nothing too exciting here. I simply opened the Acc 2 connector and
connected my PC "Line Out", padded down by the conventional voltage
divider to pin 11. I did find that I needed more audio than that
provided by the recommended 100:1 divider and ended up with a 30:1 ratio.
Probably this is because the accessory connection is not the same as the
mike audio in pin. The criteria here, as you are aware, is to be able to
adjust the input down to a value where ALC indication begins.
Transmitter keying is accomplished with VOX and output audio comes from
the external speaker jack and can be handled in several ways. My audio
feeds a Timewave 59+ audio filter which provides a fixed value for the
sound card, and full control of the radio speaker audio. Disconnecting
the PC speakers allows for dead quiet while printing incoming text.
Notice that there are no transformers mentioned. That is another story
and has to do with isolation, when it is necessary.

I notice that many folks are suggesting to adjust audio to just where ALC
action commences. I believe that is too high. When alc action has
commenced, signal compression has also started with the attendant
distortion. This is of course similar to the discussions that have occurred
in many places relating to the agc action and agc speeds etc. For friendly
neighbor operation there should be no evidence of alc.

I have seen lots of discussion and have been puzzled by the fact that even
if I wanted to, I get no ALC "action" at all in PSK. When using my mic I
get all the usual ALC levels.

Andrew,
Could be you don't have enough audio to kick in the ALC. I'm using the AFSK
connector on my Kenwood and the line-level audio in and out of the
SoundBlaster. I increase my SB output until the ALC just starts to
indicate, then back it off to the point where no ALC action shows on the
meter. This seems to work fine.

I wonder what the all time record is for a badly wide PSK signal ? I saw
one (a JA) on 10M tonight that had side bars (in one direction only ) that
were 1200 Hz wide!

Don't know about other rigs, but just below ALC is way too high for my
rig. I can increase audio to just under full power and have no alc.
IMD is fairly poor until I get down to about half power, and it gets
better below that.

I AM USING A TS-87O AND CONNECTING TO THE MIC. PLUG ON THE FRONT PANEL.
THE FOLLOWING IS WHAT I DID:

IT IS NOT THE POWER THAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM.
IT IS OVER THE DRIVING OF THE AUDIO INPUT TO THE RADIO FROM THE SOUND CARD
THAT CREATES HAVOC.
I AM USING WINDOWS 98 WITH A PENTII AND SOUNDBLASTER CARD.
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN IS WHAT IS REFERRED TO AS THE TASK BAR.
IT HAS AN ICON SHOWING A LOUD SPEAKER.
DOUBLE CLICK THIS ICON.
YOUR VOLUME CONTROL SETTINGS WILL OPEN UP ONTO THE SCREEN.
THIS IS WHERE YOU SET THE VOLUME LEVEL OF THE OUTPUT OF THE SOUND CARD AND
WAVE BALANCE.
THERE IS A WAY TO SETUP THE SOUND TO THE TRANSMITTER WITHOUT A METER USING
THE RIG'S MIC INPUT
OPEN THE ICON.
THEN BRING THE MASTER CONTROL TO A SETTING OF APPROXIMATELY 20 PERCENT HIGH
OR 80 PERCENT LOW.... SAME WITH WAVE BALANCE.
WITH THE TRANSMITER ON AND SIGNAL ON IDLE.....ON THE AIR (BE CAREFUL AND BE
CERTAIN THAT THE FREQUENCY IS NOT IN USE).
WHILE STILL TRANSMITTING AT IDLE SET OUTPUT POWER CLOSE TO MAXIMUM
REDUCENYOUR ALC METER (WITH CARRIER CONTROL) TO A POINT WHERE ANY/ALL
READING OF ALC DISAPPEARS COMPLETELY.
THERE SHOULD BE NO ALC READING AT ALL..
NEXT WHILE STILL TRANSMITTING AT IDLE
BRING THE POWER OUTPUT DOWN TO 25 OR 30 WATTS
THIS IS ENOUGH FOR MOST PSK USE.
AGAIN IF THERE IS AN ALC READING, GET RID OF IT.
THIS SHOULD SET YOU UP. YOU SHOULD NOW BE ABLE TO GO FROM 10 WATTS TO FULL
OUTPUT
USING THE CARRIER CONTROL, ONLY.
KEEP ON EYE ON ALC METER BE SURE THERE IS 0.
