Meaningful measurements are probably only possible when using idle signal.
At that point your power out should be nmt 40-50 watts max using 747 at full
power. 20-30 watts is probably better but output spectrum and IMD is
heavily dependent on rig and certainly to some extent to sound card
although, I've recently made spectrum measurements of both sound cards and
my rigs and the sound card spectrum is very clean (more than one card) and
rigs output is quite variable (20 db difference) in IMD. When sending macros
you begin to see the peak power of the signal which is at best difficult to
observe and even using an excellent spectrum analyzer little meaningful
information is observable. Good soundcard output spectrum under idle
conditions
will have only two sideband peaks (separated by 31.5 Hz) and will be only
about 100 Hz wide at -60db with no
other sidebands present. Transmitter output is of course another matter.
My Kenwood TS-570S has additional sidebands present (multiples of 31.5 Hz)
that are only about -26db down under power from 10 thru 40 watts. At higher
powers, the sidebands go up (IMD greater). All of this is of course
measured under idle.
Interestingly enough my Collins KWM-2A has sidebands that are at most -40 db
at 50 watts output and even better at lower power levels. Unfortunately
it's stability is at best marginal. I have yet to measure my FT-1000MP but
will try to get all of this data in a form so that those interested can look
and make own observations. Spectrum pictures of the Kenwood and the Collins
have been made.

You really can't get more than 20-25 watts out of a 757
without over heating the finals. I am running one now.
Don't forget that even though the duty cycle during
idle is 50%, the efficiency on a two tone signal runs
about 62% instead of the 87% it runs on single tone.

I thought I'd give you an update on how my USB connection worked out. To
refresh your memory, I only had one Serial port (COM1) and NO IRQ's
available. I wanted to run a couple of radio programs using radio control.
So, to get another serial port I bought a USB to Serial adapter.
Radio: Kenwood TS450
OS: Windows 98
Programs: Log-EQF(DOS) and PKTerm 99(windows 98)
Data Controller: PK900
USB to Serial Port Converter: Belkin F5U103 (List 79.95 - Abt 62.00 on
Buy.com)
Radio Interface cable: JBI (arrived today!)
Results:
First, I connected the Belkin adapter to a USB port and that provided me
with COM 3 and DID NOT require any additional IRQ's. With a hub and
multiple adapters, I guess you could add many additional serial ports
without the need for more IRQ's.
Next, the JBI cable was connected to the radio and existing COM 1 and the
PK900 on USB COM 3. Everything worked as it should for both the Windows
and DOS program. I did not try using the PK900 with Log-EQF TNC feature .
Now, I wanted to see if the JBI cable would work on COM3 (the one with the
Belkin adapter to the USB connector) so I switched it to COM 3 and put the
PK900 on COM 1. When doing this, I found that the JBI cable worked on the
USB COM3 port with PKTerm 99 (a windows program) but I could not get it to
work correctly with LOG-EQF. There was something in the set-up of the
Belkin adapter that talked about setting up DOS drivers but since I had
everything working I decided to switch back to my original configuration
where both programs worked.
I hope all that makes sense to you. Other than plugging a scanner into a
USB port, this was my first experience with them so I may not have done
things the easiest way.

p.s. Tom, I've got to do a little reading about RIG-EQF to see if that is
something I want for my Kenwood. You will probably hear from me before
long on that subject.

I'm really interested in that USB to serial adapter. Where
can I get one? I have just one serial port on this machine
too but it has two USB ports and one IR port.
