Subject: [psk31] w1b special event in Vt
Every year in early Feb I am involved in the W1B snowflake Bentley
special event station.
This year is the fourth year running. For the first time, I brought
along psk31. It was a busy
weekend with many other contests running, but I am happy to report that
amoung the 27 psk
contacts that I made, not one of them showed excessive distortion. It
looks to me like
psk is catching on and more hams are getting a feel for how to run it
well. In the early
days of psk (6 months ago) I saw some rather overdriven signals, but
this past weekend,
things seemed to be not so bad. Look for W1B next Feb. Info on the
event is in Feb QST,

Another thing to remember is that digital audio filters can square off
waves or generate harmonics and make received audio look terrible when it
is in fact clean. I had an experience similar to what Bob relates above.
Another op told me my signal was dirty. I already had resistors in line,
was not moving my ALC indicator, and was running 50w. I'd always gotten
good reports before. I reduced power to almost nothing, and still he told
me my signal was wide.
Then he mentioned he was using a Timewave DSP-599zx. Later, I tried my own
identical Timewave in line before the sound card. Signals that looked
clean on the waterfall now looked "dirty" and "sandwiched" with harmonic
bands. When I switched to the SpectroGram program, it was easy to see what
was going on--audio harmonics galore. Take the audio filter off line, and
they disappeared.
So if you use an outboard audio filter between your receiver and the sound
card, be sure to check signals both with and without it. You may find that
what you gain selectivity in using the outboard filter, you lose in the
apparent broadening of everyone's signal. In most cases, you don't really
need the audio filter. The PSK programs and sound card are selective
enough, and all you're sparing is your ears. A better idea is to use a CW
crystal filter, or just turn down the audio gain to your speaker.
This isn't to say that there aren't plenty of "dirty rotten signals" out
there. It seems almost everybody first tries PSK without putting resistors
in the transmit audio line. You should have seen some of the newbie
signals in the Hellschreiber activity day recently.

Subject: [psk31] Question: Adjusting an old rig for PSK31
Hi PSKers!
I've got an old Hallicrafters HT-44 (mid '60's) transmitter that I've
been using with psk-31 for a couple of weeks. I've had a few QSO's but
have missed *many* that sounded like easy ones.
Which makes me think I've got something adjusted wrong. Maybe you can
help.
The HT-44 is hooked up to a Sound Blaster card through a 1:1 audio
transformer and 100k:1k voltage divider (the divider is on the mic input
of the tx).
I adjust the HT-44 as follows:
a) set it for cw
b) tune it up
c) set output for 1/2 of max available power
d) set it for usb
e) turn on DigiPan (Tx Idle) and set HT-44 Mic gain so the output
meter reads about 90% of what it did in step (c)
Please note. The HT-44 does not have an ALC light or meter!
Does this sound like the right way to adjust things?

ps - I don't really understand the how an audio isolation transformer
between the SB Card and the transmitter will help... After all, the
computer and the transmitter have their grounds tied together with the
PTT transistor circuit.

One technique to help the poor offending guy is to take a screen shot of the
spectrum display and then send it to the op via email. One picture is worth
a kiloword.
Isn't this fun though? We are all having to understand what really is going
on in these circuits. It's probably the most technical thought that many of
us have done in years.

Isn't the problem partially ours? How many of us have RST-599 hardcoded?
How often do I hear anything else? With PSK-31, you can't even hear what
you are transmitting without special hardware.
You can see it on the spectrum display if you know what to look for,
but you can't see your own transmission.
Once you figure it out, it is pretty easy to tune the signal amplitude,
but to be honest, I can't be 100% sure that my procedure is correct.
All I ever get back is 599. I think I'd get 599 even if I spattered the whole
AF bandwidth.

I think I have mentioned this in the past but here it is again. If you can
locate an old Heathkit SB610 monitor scope, put it in the transmission line
and you will be able to see your transmitted signal. There are a lot of these
units around which were use for RTTY and other purposes. A real handy piece
of eqipment and can also be used as a general purpose o-scope.

You must only contact the ones who dont care- I have had several give me
real reports about my signal, including the IMD numbers, both
spontaneously, and on request. One of the things I like about the Logger
program is the report and the picture (others do it too).
On my first attempts, I had help from a couple of guys, who worked with me
to get set up right.- "599" may be hard wired in the log programs but the
hard wiring seems to stop short of the brains of some who have helped me.
They have been observant, helpful and courteous (NOT "Put down")

Yes, Logger has a nice spectral (correct terminology?) display. I try
to give honest reports about distortion and harmonics, I never saw a
need to give a (S)ignal strength report for PSK31, just quality of
print and how clean the signal looks. Once and a while I get signal
characteristic reports back, but I usually ask for them. Maybe we need
an "RT" signal report? :)
Thanks to everyone for discussing this, I think I learned a lot about
PSK31 signals this week.

Maybe I haven't been on long enough (first PSK31 QSO was 1/7/00).
I made the usual mistake of overdriving at first and you guys
helped me to resolve it. I see the new ones coming on every day
and they all make the same mistakes, but I have yet to run into
anyone who didn't care. Everyone cares, they just don't know and
are grateful for help, as I was. This is new, in my 45 years of
hamming I have never seen anything catch on as fast as PSK has.
So, we have some growing pains, let's deal with it as a group and
we will be successful. I think there are very few who don't care.
