Hi all,
Let me advise that on Czech WEB site www.pandora.cz was installed new
Digital mode
reflector Digimody@pandora.cz. Themes are all about Hell, PSK31, MT63 and
similar
modes espec. with PC and soundcards. Language is Czech without accents
(preferred),
English is also accepted. Messages are transferred to Czech Packet Radio
network.

I'm fortunate in that the SoundBlaster 16 I have in my PSK31 equipped
computer (network server running NT Server 4.0) has both line out and
speaker out. The line out goes to the rig (also a line in from the rig) and
I have a separate speaker plugged in for monitoring. I put a volume control
with the speaker to allow me to control that or turn off the sound
completely.
Oh, BTW, two things. 1st. Congratulation on getting on this fun mode.
2nd. Check the Windows volume controls to make sure the your line out in
either "selected" or is not "muted".

I realize that this has probably been covered in the recent past, but I
need to ask.
My "sound card" setup is built-in, and has only the ID of "soundblaster
compatible". It has "Line in", "Line out" (with a speaker symbol), and "mic
in". The documentation doesnt even contain the word "impedance", much less
any values. Sorry to say, the handbook that came with my older "Sound
Blaster" (the real thing) is in the same shape.
My radio (FT 920) has the data I want, and has a data port for AFSK in,
PTT, and Audio out, at levels compatible with the computer. I have hooked
the two together with apparent success, but I still feel ignorant of the
set-up. I have asked for critical assment of my signal, with consistantly
good quality reports. (One helpful guy went through an adjustment test with
me, to be sure the Tweaking was doing as expected). When I set the ALC to
just show on peaks, it is great. My "ears" are also fine.
The mixer controls on the sound card seem to be at unusual levels when the
system is working right. I feel that I am adjusting for what would be a
poor match with the three controls that I must set. (FT920 mic gain, card
mic in, and card master volume control) This is a case of too many
controls that change the same thing.
The question?- well, on the common Sound cards, just what IS the impedance
of the three common elements?(Line in, line out, and mic in)

Dear Bill,
You are not going to like the answers, because the answers are not going to be
as much help as you were hoping for. Part of the reason for that is that there
aren't many problems - most of what you are seeing as potential problems are not
problems at all.
The input to the Microphone channel is probably a very high impedance (relative
to any source from which you will be supplying audio. The Line input is
generally a lower input impedance than the Mic input, but still much higher than
any source you would have from your radio. Specifics - speaker output and
headphone output from a radio will be from 8 ohms to a few hundred ohms at most.
Bottom line on the radio to sound card path is this - you can't go wrong on
impedances, so don't sweat it.
Turning to the path from sound card to the rig. Generally speaking, the output
of the soundcard will be about 8 ohms or less on the speaker output and perhaps
as much as a few hundred ohms for the Line out. Over at the rig you will be
feeding the audio into a microphone input or a pin on the accessory connector.
Either one of those will be a high impedance relative to the Line out impedance
and a very high impedance relative to the speaker out from the sound card.
Again, the bottom line is that you can't go wrong, so don't sweat it.
Now, let's talk about level adjustments. The golden rule is that until you have
gotten your levels calibrated and recorded, GO SLOW. Start with the level at
zero and work your way up until you arrive at the proper level. The adjustable
elements are in cascade. That means that for all practical purposes, the net
effect is that each control exerts its proportionate influence linearly. In
plain english that means you can set all but one to max and use the one
remaining adjustment as the controller. The holds true for either path - radio
to sound card or sound card to radio. In the real world, it may not be that
simple, but theoretically it will work.
By the way, if you become plagued with some of the more common problems - such
as common mode (no pun intended) and ground loop and RF induction, etc., then
you may want to consider my posts describing the acoustic coupling of both
paths.

I HAD A GREAT DEAL OF DIFFICULTY USING PSK. I WANTED "POWER" I WAS GOING TO
BLAST. I SOON FOUND OUT IT IS NOT NECESSARY.
I CANNOT TAKE CREDIT FOR THE FOLLWING PROCEDURE AS IT IS A COMPILATION OF
MANY SUGGESTIONS FROM HAMS THAT TRULY WANTED TO HELP AS OPPOSED TO "FLAMING
ME FOR TO MUCH IMD, TO WIDE ETC".. MANY CRITICIZED BUT A FEW GENUINELY
WANTED TO HELP.
MY THANKS TO THOSE WHO DID TAKE THE TIME TO HELP ME.
THE FOLLOWING IS WHAT I DID:

IT IS NOT THE POWER THAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM.
IT IS OVER DRIVING THE AUDIO INPUT TO THE RADIO FROM THE SOUND CARD.
I AM USING WINDOWS 98
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN IS WHAT IS REFERRED TO AS THE TASK BAR.
IT HAS AN ICON SHOWING A LOUD SPEAKER.
DOUBLE CLICK THIS ICON.
YOUR VOLUME CONTROL SETTINGS WILL OPEN UP ONTO THE SCREEN.
THIS IS WHERE YOU SET THE VOLUME LEVEL OF THE OUTPUT OF THE SOUND CARD,
THERE IS A WAY TO SETUP SOUND TO TRANSMITTER WITHOUT A METER USING THE MIC
INPUT
OPEN THE ICON.
THEN BRING THE MASTER MASTER CONTROL TO A SETTING OF APPROXIMATELY
20 PERCENT HIGH OR 80 PERCENT LOW....
I USED 20 PERCENT AS THE STARTING POINT.
WITH TRANSMIT AT SIGNAL AT IDLE.....ON THE AIR (BE CAREFUL AND BE CERTAIN
THAT THE FREQUENCY IS NOT IN USE), WATCH YOUR POWER OUTPUT
WHILE STILL TRANSMITTING AT IDLE SET OUTPUT POWER CLOSE TO MAXIMUM
BRING YOUR ALC METER TO A POINT WHERE ANY/ALL READING OF ALC DISAPPEARS
COMPLETELY,
THERE SHOULD BE NO ALC READING AT ALL..
NEXT WHILE STILL TRANSMITTING AT IDLE
BRING THE POWER OUTPUT DOWN TO 25 OR 30 WATTS
THIS IS ENOUGH FOR MOST PSK USE.
AGAIN IF THERE IS AN ALC READING MAKE IT GO BYE BYE
THAT SHOULD SET YOU UP.
I NOW TOTALLY ENJOYMUSING PSK31.
