Subject: [psk31] PSK31 On A 386?
I would appreciate help with some questins:
1. Has anyone made PSK31 work with the new Radio Shack HTX-10 Ten Meter
tranceiver (catalog 19-1110)?
2. If so, do you know the pin-outs on the DIN 6-pin mike connector --
where one injects the line-out signal from the sound card (through a
proper network to reduce signal strength to mike levels.).
3. I have a 386, 16 megahertz computer sitting here doing nothing. (I
hate to send it to the land fill.) Is there sofware that is efficient
enough to run PSK31 in a 386 ?
4. Is the inexpensive ASOUND GOLD 16PnP ISA 16 bit sound card suitable
for PSK31? Will it work? Anybody try it?

Dear Amrum,
You did not say whether you are using Pin 4 or Pin 7. Which are you using?
You did not say whether you are using COM1, 2, 3, or 4 - Which are you using?
On what port is your MODEM connected?
There has been a history of failure of the transistor in that circuit as a
result of inadequate Collector to Base breakdown voltage (Vcb). For example,
there have been transistors sold in packets from Radio Shack that claim to be
2N2222 when in fact they were not even NPN transistors. You do have to be
careful. I do not believe this is your problem because your symptoms point to
correct operation of the transistor control circuit.
For the serial port to be momentarily triggered during Windows startup is
normal. For it to be triggered, even momentarily, by any other program strongly
suggests that your configuration is expecting there to be a MODEM on that that
serial port.
I suggest that you look closely at your MODEM configuration and even temporarily
remove the MODEM (logically) from your Windows configuration in order to confirm
that this is the problem.
You do not say whether the "Outlook" program is the "Outlook" that is part of
MSOffice or if it is the "Outlook Express" that is part of Internet Explorer 4.0
and beyond. I suspect that whichever it is, that program is trying to establish
communication with the MODEM that it thinks is on that same serial port.that you
are using for PTT control.
A more complete diagnosis can be performed if you capture your system
configuration to a file and send it as an attachment. Procedure for doing that
follows:
1) Configure a Generic/Text only printer for your system and specify its output
as to File - not LPT port.
2) Save the system configuration as a text file as follows:
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
Select System -> Tab DeviceManager.
Select Computer and press "Print" button.
Select "All Devices and System Summary" and Check the box "Print to File", and
in the "Print to File Dialog box, specify a .prn file name and directory that is
convenient and under "Settings" specify the Generic/Text only printer as the
printer.
3) Include that file as an attachment to myself or any individual willing to
analyze
it - NOT to the ListServer.

Subject: [psk31] MT63
During Saturday's Hellschreiber Activity Day operating, I heard someone
fire up MT63 around 14.063, wiping out an entire kHz of spectrum. I felt
like a puny human running under the feet of Godzilla. I also heard other
ops on the east coast talking about other incidents.
Please, folks, lets try and keep the narrowband and wider-bandwidth modes
separate.
Contrast that with PSK31, where I just had the pleasure of copying two
stations spaced 49 Hz apart. The signals' sidebands were just touching on
the waterfall display. One was S7, the other was S2, and I could copy
either on with a click of the mouse. Together they sounded like a
composition by Karlheinz Stockhausen, but as far as copy went, no mutual
QRM. Nice!
