I tried running psk31 on a 486-66 with windows 95 and had trouble getting
psk31 to work. Does windows 95 take up to much room? Then I tried Windows
3.1 with the same results. The screen doesn't seem to fully load and can't
find a signal. The sound card is set for full duplex.

Is my old computer just junk?

winpsk gives the message "computer is to slow" so I tried the original
version of psk31 and still no luck! does anyone have any good answers?

Dear Tom,

You, yourself, have found your answers.

It is difficult to diagnose the problem remotely, but your tests are very likely
to be conclusive. Your symptoms are classic and are a far better indicator than
having someone tell you what computers will or will not hack it.

Here are some interesting statistics from the WinPSK CPU utilization display:

Pentium 75 MHz with 48 MB Ram:
17% in Xmit, 27% in Receive.

K6-2 350MHz with 64 MB Ram:
3% in Xmit, 7% in Receive.

It has been said that a 486 66MHz machine will do the job, but it does make a
difference as to whether you are running Win 95 or Win 3.1 and it also matters
how much RAM you have. You did not say how much RAM you have.

Normally, one would say that the 486DX 66 MHz machine would do the job, but only
in Win 3.1. Remember that PSK31SBW was written as a 16 bit application and only
needs a Win 3.1 operating system. Conversely, WinPSK was written as a 32 bit
application and really needs the Win 9x operating system AND a much higher
horsepower machine.

I am running PSK31 on a 486/66 with Win3.1 with no problem. At most the PC
has 16M ram, probably 8 (I don't remember).
