Just a reminder concerning the ARRL RTTY RoundUp this weekend...
The editors of QST magazine are sponsoring a special PSK31 plaque for the
2000 ARRL RTTY Round-Up to encourage participation in this exciting mode!
If you use PSK31 during this year's RTTY Round-Up, keep track of those QSOs
and multipliers. After calculating your entire score and submitting it in
the proper file format at the correct ARRL e-mail or postal address (see the
rules announcement on page 100 of the December 1999 QST), calculate a second
summary sheet of just your PSK31 QSOs and multipliers. Mark "PSK31 Entry"
clearly at the top of the second summary. There is no need to submit a
second log file of PSK31-only contacts.
Send your PSK31 summary sheet via e-mail to PSK31plaque@arrl.org, or mail it
in a separate envelope to: PSK31 Plaque Contest, ARRL, 225 Main St,
Newington, CT 06111 by the contest deadline. The winner will be the station
that posts the highest PSK31 score in the contest.
You can operate other modes as well as PSK31 (RTTY, PACTOR, etc) for your
master entry and still submit a second PSK31-only score as described above.
If you choose to participate in the contest using only PSK31, you should
submit a summary sheet and log file as required under the rules and a second
summary sheet as described.

Hi to everyone,
my name is Harry, DL6NBC, making my 1st steps with PSK31.
Sorry for asking that question here, but my internet possibilities are
limited, mail is much easier for me.
I´m using a old 486DX40 VL-Bus and WIN 3.11. And I´m trying to work
with psk31sbw.exe.
The Problem: After calling the programm a German Windows-Message-Box
comming up and saying this format is not supported... I interpreted
this is a problem with my old PC-Soundcard (AZTECH)(probably 8-Bit ?)
and checked another Sound-Card (ESS). With this one the program is
hanging up itself instantly. It is only possible to kill the job, the
display of windows is alway nearly black after this, so that I have to
restart. The scope on the left lower part of the screen is activ with
a 10 seconds delay. That means, after switching off the af-input to
the sound-card it is only a point displayed after 10 seconds, bringing
up the af-input agn brings the pointers moving in different directions
agn after 10 seconds.
So the question is: Does anyone know what my problem is? Two wrong
soundcard? Does there exist a listing of soundcards working with that
program? Am I doing something wrong at all?

DigiPan is great!
But DigiPan uses the RTS pin (7) on the RS232 port (DB-9 connector) while
all my other digital software use the DTR pin (4). What to do? just solder
two
diodes, anodes to pin 4 and 7, solder the cathodes together and to the
trigger
]pin on your switch in the transmitter or the base (in series with the
resistor)
of your switch. It works very well. Any old diodes will do.

I sent a note to the DigiPan folks after a noticed that the tones I
generated were VERY high in tone if I clicked on the 3000 Hz area or very
low in tone toward the 300 Hz area.

However my brain finally kicked in a said, "hey wait a minute, this happens
whether my rig is in transmit mode or not, it can't be the rig".
So, I may not have explained it correctly the first time. But does anyone
else notice this occurrence . Seems that although you can click anywhere on
DigiPan's spectral scope, you have to be within a certain range (1000 to
1500) for the tones to sound correct when you send tones.

I am wondering what prevents the smart blokes that create this software from
adding a feature where the software detects the characteristics of the mode
we have "clicked" on and automatically switches to the appropriate digital
specific mode.
Just an idle thought....sure would be useful for the RTTY Round-Up since it
allows multi digital modes.

Hi Walt,
Wouldn't it have been easier to just open the menu Configure->Serial Port
and uncheck RTS. If you do that then the program will use DTR (pin4). The
help file is there to be read and most of the times you'll find the answers
you are looking for in it.

A few years ago, I worked for a large defense contractor as a software
engineer. We developed equipment for the government that automatically
determined the transmission mode, and selected the correct demodulation
technique. It involved a lot of software.
I can usually determine the modulation type by the sound of the signal,
sometimes with the help of a computer display. As an example, a slow-scan fax
display is helpful in determining baud rate. Computers don't hear anything, so
recognition must all be done with dsp algorithms. The company invested a lot
of money in these algorithms. In theory, similar work could be done by the
amateur community, but it will take years before we start seeing this kind of
capability.

Perhaps I can put in a bit about this problem that worries Gary,
especially as it was my idea originally to work at 1 kHz rather than
1.7 or 2 kHz.
In general, if a linear system has a small amount of distortion, the
2nd order products (i.e. the second harmonic) will be worse than the
3rd-order products (i.e. the intermods). So if the soundcard or the
audio stages are responsible for bad intermods, we could expect that
the harmonics would be bad too. It's not surprising, therefore, that
the two go together, IF THE DISTORTION IS IN THE AUDIO.
However, the vast majority of audio circuits and soundcards, when set
up correctly with no overdrive or clipping, will give total
distortion levels which are well below the levels which would worry
us on the air. Remember we are generating pure clean linear sinewaves
in the PSK31 software, not the nonlinear squarewaves which were the
usual method of getting on RTTY with AFSK. This is why I saw no
problem at all with 1 kHz audio tone frequency.
The 3rd-order intermods that show up on the air, on a transmitter
that is NOT being overdriven on the audio side, will almost certainly
be due to the residual non-linearity of the RF power amplifier. A
typical transmitter intermod level of 30dB does not mean that there
might be a spurious tone 1 kHz higher that is 30dB down or worse: the
2nd order nonlinearity of a 14MHz RF power amplifier gives a product
at 28 MHz, not 14.001.
We cannot therefore conclude that a signal with bad intermods will
also have a bad audio harmonic, but we CAN say that if a signal with
bad intermods ALSO has an audio harmonic, then it is DEFINITELY
overdriving the audio. Turning it down will take the +1 kHz audio
harmonic down into the noise and take the +/- 45Hz intermods down to
the level determined by the RF power amplifier.
There is a simple way to detect audio harmonics on your own
transmitter. Hook up a diode detector lightly coupled to the
transmitter RF output and feed the resulting demodulated A.M. to a
pair of headphones. Some old wavemeters or SWR bridges had a socket
for headphones intended for monitoring A.M. modulation. Set the
transmitter radiating a TUNE signal, that is, an SSB signal from the
1 kHz audio output of the soundcard. Listen to the demodulated AM. If
there is any residual 1 kHz audible in the headphone, it's due to 2nd
harmonic audio or to carrier leakage. You can tell which it is by
sliding the audio frequency up above 1.7 kHz: if the demodulated AM
goes away it was audio harmonic and if it doesn't then it was carrier
balance.

I am passing this along from the ARRL Contest Branch concerning the RTTY
RoundUp this weekend:
I understand that quite a bit of discussion has been kicked around on the
RTTY related reflectors in regards to the time-off rules for the upcoming
RTTY Round-Up. After numerous emails, several phone calls and a couple of
discussions with people who were involved with the rules, which have
remained unchanged in this regard since they were written back in the late
1980's, please allow me to address this.
The key element is that operating time is limited to 24 hours during the 30
hour contest period. The issue being discussed revolves around meeting the
required two time-off periods, which must total 6 hours. Several have
pointed out that this rule has been interpreted to allow the time to be
taken in consecutive blocks of time. Others have pointed out in early
write-ups and articles about the contest it has been loosely interpreted as
allowing a single block of six hours to meet this rule requirement.
The rule, while seemingly fairly clearly written, is in fact open to several
interpretations. I am going to ask the appropriate committees to look at
this and see what might be done to clear it up. For this year's running of
the event, we are looking for operating time not to exceed 24 hours during
the contest period. This year, stations will not be penalized if their off
times are consistent with generally accepted practices from previous
runnings of this contest.

Neat idea, Peter, and simple. Thanks for the explanation.
I was really discouraged yesterday when I heard someone with a 1 call
ask another how his signal was on the air. The 1 had an IMD reading of
- -10db and a very strong audio harmonic to boot. The other station said
the IMD "might be a bit high", but he didn't hear any harmonic. Oh
well.
