Subject: [psk31] Lack of com ports

Has anyone interfaced psk to a Kenwood TS450 via ACC 1 or 2?

My computer setup has run out of com ports so I need some help. Com1
is the mouse, com2 is the Kenwood interface, com3 is a rotor interface
and com4 is the modem. If I had a USB port the problem would be easy to
solve, use a USB mouse. Unfortunately the header is missing from the
motherboard. The pad is there but I am not going to even try to solder
(if is was even possible) on the motherboard.

I have PSK working just fine, its just a pain to have to "push" the
send/rec on the front of rig. I am currently set up with a Heil boom
mike foot switch activated. When I want to use PSK I unplug the mike
cable and plug in the PSK cable.

Has anyone solved the keying mystery of a foot switch method of
keying??

  Thanks 73, Robert K7ROB

Dear Bob,

I would think that you could use an A/B switch to allow one of your serial ports
to do double duty. Just put the modem and the rig on the A/B switch and switch
to whichever one is needed for current operations.

Doesn't the PSK GNR front end have some support files to permit keying
of the rig via the rig control port? That might be an option. Using the
VOX *might* also be an option if you can get your rig to key reliably.

The A-B switch is probably the simplest and most reliable solution.

Regarding the USB port, if the connector isn't present on the mother
board it's likely that the BIOS doesn't support it and/or the other
supporting chips are not present.

You're right --- +/-12 volts is standard for RS232 levels. Just remember
that
your serial card would have to provide the current for the coil. I'm not
sure
if it can.

I'd be *very* cautious about trying to drive a relay directly from the
RS232 output. If you smoke the driver IC in a laptop it's likely to get
real expensive.

At the risk of suggesting something you've already tried, I propose that
Win NT has different settings than Win98 for your sound card's volume
control---in particular, the RECORDING controls, that effect the input
audio level. This suggestion has helped many previous problem posters,
since the Recording sliders don't readily pop up unless you go through the
menu to get to them.

I'm not sure about NT, but with Win95 and Win98 here's how it works...

1. Double-click the speaker icon in your system tray.
2. In the menu, select Options, Properties.
3. Select the radio button to Adjust Volume for RECORDING
4. Be sure the input port you're using (Mic or Line In) is
    selected and click OK.
5. Now, you should see the sliders for your input port. Be sure
it is "selected" and the slider is not set to the zero level.

Hope this helps you (or someone else).

Here's a good explanation on RS-232 signal levels and drive
capabilities: http://www.analogservices.com/rs232.htm

The bottom line is that the RS-232 spec guarantees a minimum of +/- 5
volts with a 3000 ohm load (or 1.67 mA). You can probably get more but
it'll vary depending on the computer.

Yes the KPTT module will allow PSKGNR (and other compatible programs)
to key Kenwood radios via the accessory RS232 jack. However, it does
not kill the MIC input (that's a limit on the radio, not KPTT). There
are several ways you could use KPTT:

1) Use PSKGNR
2) Bother the program developer for the program you use to support the
xPTT interface (I understand the Hell software does this). I provide
info on how the interface works -- it is very simple.
3) Run KPTT. There is a big round button that lets you toggle your PTT
from the PC. If the button is red you are transmitting. If it is green
you are not.

P.S. I might even be on 20m PSK this afternoon after a long absence if
nothing comes up.

I used the single transistor RS-232 control circuit specified for the
HAMCOMM RTTY/AMTOR program for many years. When I went on PSK31, there
was nothing else to do. The same control circuit works fine for all modes
without any switching. Thanks Django and Peter.

Subject: [psk31] Update on PSK31 & Windows NT

Hello All,

Thanks for all the suggestions so far with PSK31, but I still do not have
anything
dancing in the tuning scope and the waterfall is still black.

As I said before, I have no problem using this with my Windows 98 hard
drive.
Only with the Windows NT workstation.

I am using the NT workstation as a client on a 2 pc network. I have NT
Server installed
as the server and an using 3com Ethernet 10/100 TX lan cards in each pc
to talk to each
other. There is no other software on the server except the NT Server
operating system. This should not have any affect on the audio on either
pc.

With the NT hard drive, I am getting audio through the external speakers
connected
to the pc through the sound card. I can control that audio with the
volume control that I bring up on the screen. I know that I am getting
audio to the pc through the line input
otherwise I wouldn't hear anything through the attached speakers which
are connected
to the line out on the sound card. The volume control is NOT MUTED.

Using the Windows 98 hard drive, even with the volume control muted, I
was still able to
see the tuning scope with the red dancing around.

I tried another shareware program called Spectrogram. This shows an
audio pattern
across the screen. This program can NOT be ran at the same time with
PSK31
because they both use the same sound driver. I have played with this
using the
Windows 98 hard drive just to see how it works and what it does.

Trying to run both causes a message to appear that the sound card is
already in use.
I also tried to run the Spectrogram in NT without opening up PSK31. It
does not
show any audio pattern coming across the screen.

Without opening PSK31 or the Spectrogram, I started checking various .wav
files
in Windows NT. I had no problem with any of them playing and sounding
like they
were supposed to. They all played through the external speakers and I
could use
the onscreen volume to control them. I then opened up PSK31 and tried
playing
various .wav files again.

Some of the .wav files in certain directories would not play. None of
the wave files
in the C:\winnt\media would play at all. Yet all of the .wav files in
the c:\xpwin\wave
directory and the C:\program files\windowsnt\pinball had no problem
playing.

In trying to play one of the .wav files that would not play, a message
popped up
saying to make sure the appropriate codec is installed. I'm saying huh,
what's that,
where do I find it, and how do I know if it is.

To find these Audio Compression Codecs:
Control Panel, Multimedia, click Devices tab, click + next to Audio
Compression
Codecs

I have a listing of 12 on these in my Windows 98. I do not have that
many in NT.
I don't know if this could be related to the no PSK31 audio or not. I've
been looking
at various help files in regard to the codec files.

This is the latest update. If anyone has any more input on this, all
opinions
are welcome. (Going back to 98 or reinstall NT Workstation and see what
happens may be the only viable solutions).

Or any of the newer PC's that have the serial ports on the mother board,

I bought an A/B switch box and mounted all the interface boards, including the
mike jack and audio jacks in the box. Now I can switch from HF to VHF or from
one HF rig to another HF rig with just the one switch on the front of the
A/B box....
And am only using one comm-port from computer (com-2).....

Fine if the driver will supply the necessary milliamps, but for goodness
sakes don't forget a reverse diode across the coil!! It's an inductive
load, and without that you will surely smoke the drive circuit. Which as
Bob pointed out, wd be expensive.

Thanks to everyone for their input on keying with a relay. I had certain
doubts the serial port could handle even a tiny relay and you all confirmed
it. I stopped by Radio Shack and aquired a 2N2222 and a couple of 1N4001's
to whip up a solid state keying circuit. I'm going to try to tuck it all
into the DB-25 case. My project for the Christmas break is to go from
'recieve only' to putting some digital RF out there.
