It would seem that you could also use UUencoding/decoding, since that produces
an ASCII text file (uses only characters less than ASCII 127, I think) for
transferring binary files.

Subject: [psk31] Pictures by PSK31!
I want to thank everyone who took the trouble to express their opinions
about sending pictures by PSK31, as I suggested on my web page at
http://members.home.com/hteller/psk31pictures/. Some people were very
interested and some were not interested at all. Of course, there are
several wider-band modes that do a better job of sending images, but not
during a PSK31 QSO. Perhaps someone will hit upon a really useful
application of the techinique and share it with us all.
Here are a few additional tips for those who want to try sending
pictures:
1. You can get by with only BINHEX.EXE
(http://members.home.com/hteller/psk31pictures/binhex.exe) for BOTH
encoding and decoding. Just put a shorcut to BINHEX.EXE in your PSK31
log folder and be sure the shortcut path is also to the log folder. When
you click on the BINHEX shortcut, you will be able to use the mouse to
select files for either encoding or decoding, and the converted files
will show up in the same folder.
2. You can use your Internet browser for viewing pictures received by
PSK31. Just put a shortcut to your browser in your "Sendto" folder and
right-click to "send" the pictures to the browser. Alternatively, you
can drag the picture into an active browser or open it as a regular
file. You can also associate .jpg and .gif pictures with your browser
and view them in the browser just by double-clicking on the picture
files. The pictures must be in the origional graphics format to do this.
3. You don't have to generate your own pictures. You can copy
postage-stamped sized ones from the Internet by right-clicking on an
image and saving it. If you want to play with the idea right away, you
can just right-click on any of the images on my "Pictures by PSK31" web
page and save them to your PSK31 log folder. Any of these pictures will
transmit in about 8 minutes.
4. For those who do not care about sending photographs, it is possible
to make a QSL card in an image editing program, using the basic 16
Windows colors to keep the size down, and be able to transmit the QSL
card in half the time it takes to send a photograph. Here is what may be
the "world's most tiny QSL card!" You can see it at:
http://members.home.com/hteller/psk31pictures/xe1dzg.gif. This
"confirmation of contact" can be transmitted in four minutes. It can't
compare to a full-sized QSL card, but it does get there a lot faster!

While playing around with sending pictures by PSK31, perhaps someone
will hit on a really good use for the technique and share it with all of
us.
