This skirts another problem I'm seeing more and more of lately. I'm not
going to mentions calls or names because that isn't the purpose of this
posting. One of the software authors, and the stateside distributor for
that software are promoting leaving either net or afc (sorry, can't
remember which) turned off during QSOs on psk. This results in the two
stations being on two different frequencies in most cases, since
invariably, one of them will drift. I don't know why it would be
promoted that way, but it is a royal pain in the butt. As I've
mentioned many times on this list, I do much more listening than talking
on psk. It just isn't any fun to try to monitor a QSO when the stations
aren't on the same frequency. PLEASE FOLKS, WHEN YOU ARE IN QSO, LEAVE
THE NET AND AFC BOTH TURNED ON!

I think I heard one of these this afternoon. It wasn't fsk31 either. I
also heard a different new one late this morning. It sounded like
psk31, but was pulsed, as if it was handshaking with another station. I
never did hear a second station.

Better to have both drift a bit on the same freq. than
eat up two freqs for one QSO.

You are probably right. That would be a fair
description of some I have heard.

The phenomenon of progressive drift is really a pain, and can be
embarassing, as well. When I was following the "NET off" recommendation, I
walked off frequency a little with each "Key down", if the Rx frequency was
not right on "1000".. A couple of guys were kind enough to stay with me,
but some quit. Finally, one kind soul explained to me what was happening.
I originally thought "the other guy" had a drifting reciever (It's never
us, is it).
My FT 920 is rock solid, and was hitting "1000" every time, regardless of
where it was recieving. When the other guy would move to follow, I had to
do the same, next exchange, and we could walk a long way, with several
exchanges.
I have no drift problems, now, that I use both AFC and NET "on".

My computer (packard bell) came with a sound card
that does not have a "line out" jack. Would I be better
off replacing it with a better sound card that does? Or
should I just pull the left speaker jack and use that?
What would be a good sound card for both PSK, HELL
SSTV and the rest of the sound card modes?

Hope I'm not going over ground already well-covered, but looking through
the archive hasn't helped me with this problem...
I have an installed and completely functional (in both Win98 and DOS 6.22)
Sound Blaster 16 PNP sound card, but I can't seem to get the software to
respond to received audio. My interface to a FT-1000 has an op amp with a
gain of up to 20 dB in the line, and with this connected to the Line In
port and monitoring the output throught the system speakers I could easily
drive the output to ear-splitting levels before the mixer gain was full up.
But the phase scope just sits there, and there's no indication of any kind
of signal on the waterfall display. Fooling with the sampling rate and
other setup parameters doesn't help. Looking through the archived messages,
I was confident my problem was just insufficient level to drive the card
via the Line In port, so I applied audio drive to the Mic In port this time
round. Now just the slightest amount of input to the line booster amp will
drive the Mic preamp into audible distortion, but bringing the Mic gain up
full produces the exact same non-response from the software. I'm puzzled.
Naturally, there's no worthwhile documentation of the hardware aspects of
the sound card, but I have no reason to believe there's anything wrong with
it, since it works perfectly in every other application, and repeats the
audio fed to it via the radio interface. Is anyone on the list able to
help? I'd really like to get this installation going.

Gotta brag here a minute. My daughter plays on the
Turner Ashby High School Girls Basketball team. Just
got back from the final regional championship game
which they won for the second year in a row making it
thier 52nd consecutive win. They won state last year
and are the favored to win it agn this year. GO TA !!!

Keep in mind that the phase scope, etc. is a 500-Hz wide audio display
display device. Not only must there be adequate signal level to the
soundcard input, and its mixer levels properly adjusted, but also there
must be signals within the 500-Hz band that is centered on the Rx
Frequency. If RX Freq is set for 1000 Hz, then the waterfall displays
signals in the range of from 750 to 1250
Hz.
So, I would suggest that you examine the setup of the radio, etc. and
make sure that it is outputting signals within the display bandwidth of
the PSK31 program as it is set up.
Several times I have stared at a black waterfall in a system that has
worked for months - nearly a year now - and discovered that I had made a
"cockpit error" in setting up the radio.

This may be obvious or it may not be, but have you checked the settings in
windows
volume control? Hit start>programs>accessories>entertainment if it's 98, in 95
I think it's just under accessories, or it may appear in your task bar on the
right
side depending on how you have windows set up. Look for an icon that looks like
a speaker in the taskbar, if it's there, right click on it. Either way should
bring up
the volume control panel.
Make sure the line or mike input isn't muted or turned all the way down.

Use the Speaker out jack as Line Out. LapTops use the Earphone jack. Not a
problem
