Yes again I was surprised by Nick UT2UZ hi, implementing now the Connect
for several packet modes. And some have allready PSK. !
I tried out the 1200 baud packet 1200/2200 hz tones last night, with an 100
millisec delay and an short Tail of 50 msec, and it worked very fast an
good.
Will try today the HF-packet.
I am using PTT not Vox, perhaps that Vox delays things an bit too much both
transmitting and receiving.
You could try to have an 300 msec tx delay to cancel out the RX to TX delay,
but going from TX to RX takes allso an bit of time and when the other
station has litlle TXdelay then you could have problems there.
As I remember, the Packetlength for HF packet is put on 40.
But there must be HF packet veterans reading this, who could tell us more
about the best values for the parameters.
I wonder if for the lower packet speeds ( 300 bd and VHF custom AFSK ( try
50 baud packet hi)) PSK would be possible in future.
Seeing how well the Psk31 , Fsk31and Psk-Hell works on both HF and VHF ,
perhaps 150 or 200 baud PSK packet would work also very fine under marginal
condx. Off course we still have much overhead in the packet-mode/protocoll.
Then packet perhaps could become an QSO mode again, and not being an (slow)
mailbox mode.
And for the QSO mode (with several stations if you want), no high speeds are
needed.
Mike I hope to tell you more on HF packet soon.

Packet was intended for VHF/UHF. It is a very inefficient mode on HF.
Lets keep going for bandwidth efficient modes like PSK31 on HF. Packet
simply does not belong on HF.

I wasn't suggesting 7035 kHz for PSK31 in USA. I was suggesting the
bottom of the IARU RTTY sub-band, and in Region 1 (Europe/Africa),
that's 7035. I know that's in the CW zone in region 2, but the IARU
bandplan is different in region 1 and 2 on 7 MHz.
I don't know where the bottom of the RTTY band is on 7 MHz in region
2, but that's where I would suggest PSK31 operates on that band.

I don't disagree with you, but it would appear that in order to work EU,
we will have to work split and listen down in your part of the band.

That sounds like a good idea. I was operating CW this AM
with 5 watts on 7040 +/- 5 and copied two US PSK31 stations
on 7036 running a lot more than 5 watts. Generally speaking
the QRP operators think 7040 +/- 10 is the CW QRP segment.
A number of US stations are operating PSK31 on 7070, and
that's about the bottom of the RTTY band; I don't know where
it is exactly.
Suggest you change the recommended frequencies for Region 2
for 40 meters at the web site. It's confusing some US operators
and may cause some hard feelings, which we don't need,
if US operators operate PSK31 on 7030 to 7040.

according to the ARRL Operating manual. Yes Yes Here I

Why not operate in the RTTY subband instead of 7030
to 7040 ????

Subject: [psk31] Never mind the ARRL
Forget my last suggestion of getting the ARRL to
establish freqs. They are more screwed up about freqs
then we are. :-)
I was just reading more in the ARRL operation manual
on freq. allocations. Well I have so far found three
different contradicting RTTY sub-band freq. ranges
given for 40 meters in three different sections of the
same fricking manual. The ARRL doesnt even seem to
know where existing sub-bands are much less where to
put a new mode. GEEESHHH !!!!!! :-)
The 7080-70100 range I believe is the correct one. At
least thats where I have always found the little bit
of RTTY activity on 40 in all my years of RTTY.
