Subject: [psk31] [PSK31] QRP operation
As so many of you know who have worked me on 20 meters, I regularly, and
only, operate PSK31 with an output power level of one watt, as measured
on my Radio Shack SWR/Power meter. My antenna is just an inverted-vee in
my attic, 30 feet high at the apex.
My typical report is 559, but I often get 519 or 509 (jokingly) reports,
with an occasional 579 or 599 stateside when propogation is very good,
and generally a little less on DX contacts.
The point is that copy is usually 80% to 100%, even with such low power,
and that is just what Peter intended to achieve with all the goodies he
built into PSK31. Thanks again, Peter!
As we all know, a readability, "R", of 5 means perfect copy. I try to
use 5 for 100% copy, 4 for 80% copy, etc., as a means of delivering a
meaningful signal report.
It would be interesting to hear how others feel about applying the CW
RST system to PSK31. I'll bet a 595 report for an overdriven signal
would generate lots of conversation!

The Chautauqua County Contest Club (CCCC) 1999 PSK31 Contest deadline for
log submission has now passed. Any Log entries submitted after 10/10/99
will NOT be accepted.
Postal entries are now being opened and an updated claimed score should be
available on the web page in about a week. The final results are expected
to be available by mid November.

Sounds like there may be some interest in establishing some records and giving
recognition to really low power QSO's in the PSK31 mode.
I would like to suggest that we begin reporting successful QSO's to this list
ListServer, so that everyone can see just what the other guy is doing. I suggest
that the verification be included in the message in the form of an e-mail from
the party with whom you were in contact, if possible. If that is impractical,
just give the other particulars.
I suggest a format as follows:
Your CallSign, Frequency Band ID(3.5,7,14,28,etc.),Your Power at idle measured
on an average power reading meter, Your signal report from the other station,
Your grid locator (e.g., FM-18-LI) Other CallSign, .... followed by as many of
the other station's data as you can obtain in the same order.
As a footnote to your report, a free form discussion of whatever you think is
relevant.
Periodically, I will publish a summary of what seems to be the "records to be
beaten" organized by band. In the interest of avoiding arguments as to how the
distances involved should be weighted, I will simply publish the summary data
for all distances.
Just in case anyone is feeling cocky, I remember that Peter has already
reported a QSO in the microwatt level.

On the subject of QRP. I once did a test with another G-station
(G3NPA) on 80m in the late evening. The distance was about 150km. but
of course the path was almost vertically up and down via the F layer
at about 400km high. He reduced power till I was copying about 80%
and he then tried to mesure his power and failed. He then got his
scope out and measured the RF voltage across the 50 ohm feedline from
the transmitter to the ATU, which was [200 millivolts] peak-to-peak.

I like this idea.
Is idle power where we should measure our power output? How does that
differ from power output in the "Tune" mode -clicking on the Tune button?
When I do that, my power output reads two watts. When I play the keyboard
of course the needle fluctuates rapidly between perhaps 1.5 to close to 2
watts. When it goes into idle, it reads 1 watt.
Set thus, I worked a PU2 this weekend. I calculated 5094 miles. So, do I
use the one watt idle or two watt key down power claims?
Wow, if one watt's the reading then I got a whopping 5094 miles per watt!
On the other hand, maybe the guy was kidding me and he's down the street
from me rather than in Sao Paulo <grin>

Subject: [psk31] PIC-based MedFER PSK31 beacon
Greetings,
I have been experimenting with PKS31 in a different way, as of late.
Normally, a computer (or some sort of DSP board) is used to generate PSK31
for transmitting. For generating a PSK31 signal this is gross overkill
and if one were to, say, operate a beacon, it might be difficult to
justify using this much hardware to generate the signal.
For the past several weeks, I have been operating a MedFER (Medium
Frequency Experimental Radio) beacon operating on 1632.41 KHz. This
beacon follows my long-running interests in both MedFER and LowFER
propagation/experimentation, much of this relating to a 10 baud BPSK/CCW
LowFER beacon that I operated in the late 80's.
To this end, I have built a PIC-based beacon transmitter. The heart of
this beacon is a 16C84 "PIC" processor and it can send the PSK31 data in
one of three modes:
1) Straight BPSK. That is, RF and Data are XORed together. This will
result in a "clicky"transmit spectra. This is what was/is typically used
on the LowFER bands as the bandwidth will be noticeably limited by the
transmitter's matching network (i.e. loading coil.) This is obviously not
recomended for MedFER or HF use.
2) Balanced Modulator. The PIC generates a PWM waveform which is filtered
and applied to a balanced modulator such as a diode singly/doubly balanced
modulator, or something like a 1496.
3) High-level modulation. The PWM signal generated by the PIC is used to
modulate a power amplifier. The power amplifier's output is brought to
zero for a phase change, and then brought back up to full power.
The latter scheme is what is used for my MedFER transmitter. It's output
amplifier is a HexFET class-E RF amplifier (similar to, but not based on
that which appeared in QST a year or so ago) for >90% efficiency. Since
it is definitely a NON linear amplifier, it's modulation is done via its
drain voltage.
The PWM output in both modes 2 and 3 are modulated with a cosine waveform
to minimize bandwidth. The PWM sample rate of 1 KHz is high enough that
simple R/C filtering is adequate to reduce the modulator's sidebands to an
acceptable level. Of course, in either modes 2 or 3, if all zeros were
sent (i.e. phase alternates 1's and zeros) you would get a 15.625 Hz
sinewave if the RF were demodulated by an envelope detector.
At the moment, the software ONLY generates BPSK transmissions: I'm
looking at the feasability upgrading the code to send QPSK data with FEC,
but that somewhat defeats the intent of the KISS principle. Additionally,
the message sent is <= 64 characters sent from the 16C84 (or 16F84) EEPROM
but I intend to add a serial port as well. The code currently supports
translation of only ASCII codes 0 through 127.
I am currently working on a web page describing this transmitter in
detail, which I would expect to be online by early November. I will post
its URL here when I have gotten it online.
Here are some specifics concering the PSK31 beacon:
Frequency: 1632.41 KHz. This will soon change to 1704.9something KHz
when the new crystal arrives.
Transmit power: 100 mW PEP INPUT
Antenna: 3 meter vertical groundplane tophatted vertical, using my
(metal) roof as a groundplane.
Location: DM40ao, near Salt Lake City, Utah.
The frequency, transmit power, antenna, and spectra are in accordance with
FCC part 15.219, quoted below in its entirety. The text transmitted by
the beacon would be used for QSLing purposes, so I will not reveal it
here.

(a) The total input power to the final radio frequency stage (exclusive of
filament or heater power) shall not exceed 100 milliwatts.
(b) The total length of the transmission line, antenna and ground lead (if
used) shall not exceed 3 meters.
(c) All emissions below 510 kHz or above 1705 kHz shall be attenuated at
least 20 dB below the level of the unmodulated carrier. Determination of
compliance with the 20 dB attenuation specification may be based on
measurements at the intentional radiator's antenna output terminal unless
the intentional radiator uses a permanently attached antenna, in which
case compliance shall be demonstrated by measuring the radiated emissions.
