That's right Andy, 14110-150 was devoid of PSK signals but a reason
could be that in this part of the world at least - these frequencies
are occupied by Pactor and other TOR modes plus Asian SSB
signals which, meant that I was not surprised when no one replied to
my CQ calls in that part of the spectrum. And so like everyone else
it would seem I defaulted to the usual 14070 frequency, or
thereabouts.
On the 21MHz band - things went according to plan, and most folk were
operating between 21100-125, with it was pleasing to note, very
little competition from other data modes or even SSB!
But back to 14070 - in this part of the world (again) - this and
immediate adjacent frequencies are very heavily used by Pactor
stations, many of them appear to be automatic (mailboxes?) who churn
away for hours on end, and they never seem to listen (auto stations
can't of course), before commencing transmission. The result is QRM
to all parties, Pactor and PSK users alike. In my set-up here I use
the CW xtal filter in the rig plus an even narrower 5-stage
Butterworth 88MH LC audio filter, but they are of little help if the
Pactor station is right on frequency, and of course the Pactor
signals have a much wider bandwidth.
SO, THE QUESTION IS - (using 14MHz band as an example), what are the
best frequencies for PSK, and contest PSK transmissions.
WE COULD REFER TO THE BANDPLANS - BUT THAT WILL
PROBABLY NOT HELP - a referral to the IARU Band Plan page at
their web site merely says "There is no world-wide IARU band plan.
IARU band plans are adopted at the regional level by the three
regional conferences". To date I have been unable to find details of
the three regional bandplans, or even if they exist at all!
Various national government administrations and Amateur Radio
societies have have suggested bandplans, like:
ARRL: "Voluntary HF Band Plan for Considerate US Operators" -
14070-095 Data
14095-0995 Auto controlled data stations
14100 IARU beacons
141005-112 Auto controlled data stations
14230 SSTV
In New Zealand the suggested bandplan according to NZART is:
14000-070 CW or modes less than 1kHz bandwidth
14070-112 Data/Packet less than 6kHz bandwidth
14112-350 All modes less than 6kHz bandwidth.
Neither plan seem to be of much use, they and probably other national
bandplans would tend to imply that that data is data and it's all the
same stuff, and as long as it's not in the SSB parts of the bands all
is well!
FREQUENCY SHARING: I operate mainly on CW and I'm very glad that I
don't have to share the CW frequencies with PSK or Pactor etc. In the
70's and 80's I operated RTTY and again I was glad I did not have to
share frequencies with CW or SSB.
SO, WHY IN 1999 ARE ALL THE DATA MODES LUMPED TOGETHER?
Now PSK like CW is a very narrow band mode and just like CW it should
have its portion of each band. Pactor and the other TOR modes on the
other hand, are wide band modes (when compared with PSK and CW), and
should be separated from CW and PSK accordingly.
I am aware that Peter, G3PLX and others have, via this mailing list,
stated that a gentleman's band plan is preferred to a compulsory
bandplan, and I tend to agree with this bearing in mind it would be
almost impossible to impose a compulsory bandplan, however it seems
to me that at present most "gentlemen" don't know WHICH or WHAT
voluntary bandplan we should be adhering to (including me), and in
any event it is just not working out.
ACCORDINGLY I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST THAT WE NEED A BRAND NEW
EXTREMELY WELL PUBLICIZED VOLUNTARY BANDPLAN, AGREED TO BY ALL THE
IARU REGIONS, ALL MAJOR NATIONAL AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETIES AND OTHER
INTERESTED PARTIES SUCH DATA OPERATING GROUPS.
If subject of PSK frequencies usage is a very important if the
popularity of PSK is to increase, and therefore I look forward to
receiving everyone's thoughts on this matter - please hit my mail
box!

Subject: [psk31] Rumble Freqencies
When the Rumble started, there was activity in the 14110-14150 range stated
in the guidelines as where to operate so others could enjoy QSO'ing around
14.070. But I seen near the end that people moved to 14070 and QSO'ing was
out of the question.
Where was all the activity? With the growth of PSK I thought this Rumble
would be quite busy. When I went to bed Friday night I thought things would
be booming in the morning. Hope everyone had fun....

Hi Just been told how to put the 500Hz CW filter into the USB mode with
program commands, hope this is of use:
Press F-5 until F-4 reads others.
Press F-4 to show set-up
using the up and down keys select the FL100 filter
Rotate vfo knob until it shows FL223
Press exit twice to show F-2 as Filters
Press F-2
Press USB mode button so it shows USN-N on the display
it will now show that there is a 1.9k filter in the USB position
The 500Hz filter still works in the CW mode, Hope this info helps.

Frank I fully agree. During the Rumble I felt quite frustrated that I was
calling CQ in a portion of the band with poor results while others were down
on 14070, after about 14 hours I too tried 14070. The results on 14070 were
better but the area was full of TOR stuff that seemed automated. I did move
WAY up but it appears that many PSKer's do not look beyond 14075.
If Peter had the brain power to develop this mode , he has much more smarts
than me. So, I won't argue with his suggested band plan but something isn't
quite working. I suggest that we ban all those SSB guys and have 14.150 to
14.350 for PSK only (only joking folks!). I guess we should at least try to
get PSKers used to having to check a wider portion during busy times.

I used ACC2 pins 3 & 4 for audio source but find that the AF control still
varies the audio output to the sound card despite notes in manual which
state "fixed level independent of AF control"
Is this typical of the TS850S? Comments anyone please.

Subject: [psk31] PSK31 and Morse Code transmissions from PI4AA
Since a few weeks, PI4AA, the clubstation of the "VERON", the National
Society for Amateur Radio in the Netherlands, is transmitting a weekly
bulletin on PSK31 together with Morse Code exercises via the same
transmitter, so combining the most modern and most ancient amateur mode!
Transmissions on every Friday evening.
Timings 2030 - 2045 UTC (summer) or 2130-2145 UTC (winter)
As these transmissions are under test, timings may change in the future!
Frequency: 3603 kHz (LSB)
(PSK tone 1000 Hz, CW tone 400 Hz)
Technical setup:
The PSK31 bulletin and the Morse Code are recorded earlier on a SONY
Minidisc (digital recording), and replayed later.
Transmitter: Yaesu FT 840
Linear: Heathkit SB 220 (on 400 W output in a horizontal dipole)
Good reception reports, both for PSK31 and Morse Code were received from all
over the Netherlands. As we are very interested in the propagation to the
rest of Europe, reception reports and comments are very welcome.

I must apologize for the confusion. I did not spot the error and have
corrected the online form. I hope we have caught it in time. I will answer
your questions in order .....
The Multipliers are counted one per band (for instance, the score
submission form showed a limit of 10 for the W class. This should be 10 per
band MAX. In your case the W4 you worked on two bands counts as 2 mults.
In the DX mults, same thing..... If you worked any stations from your
own country count that as 1 mult (per band) for that DXCC country.
Yes! the HA you worked on 3 bands counts as 3 mults.
The Call Areas, as per the Rumble rules, for the W,VK,JA and VK count
per band also AND you get 1 mult for each per band on the DXCC mults.
Many thanks again Chris for pointing this error out. Mmm! one day I
