Subject: [psk31] Psk31duty cycle
What is the duty cycle of PSK31 when sending
ordinary text? RTTY is 100%. I am build an
Elecraft K2 and it is rated at 15 watts at a
50% duty cycle, and I don't want to over stress
it.

Charles, when PSK31 is in IDLE mode, it outputs a two-tone signal whose
average power is 50% of the peak or "key down" power. So at those times -
whenever you aren't sending a keyboard character - the duty cycle is 50%.
The average duty cycle during character transmission depends upon the
character sequence and the typing speed. I would guess that it is
probably in the order of 80%.
During the interval between characters, the two-tone is sent at 50% but
during a character, the peak power is involved. Maybe someone has done a
few measurements on this for "typical" text. For very slow typing the
IDLE condition would prevail most of the time and the duty cycle would
tend toward 50%. For very rapid typing the duty cycle would tend toward
100%. Since the character codes are of different lengths - unlike RTTY -
the character sequence also enters in.
I asked the K2 boys about this before they started shipping and they said
to limit the rig to 5 watts for PSK31 instead of 10 watts for cw, etc.

That's interesting. I drive up my Ten-Tec Omni-VI to 80 to 90 watts on idle,
and I get excellent reports on the side band reduction. It is rated 100 watts
at 100% duty cycle, but it sure gets hot. I guess I'll have to
read up on two tone test signals in the ARRL handbook.

I was going to estimate 80% too, but it seems that the signal goes down
as much as it goes up. I know that if I am using VOX, which I don't use
much, the rig will drop out of transmit on text unless I crank the VOX gain
up as high as I can, and set the VOX delay on max.

They just changed the max of the rig from 10 to 15 watts, with the
caveat that you limit any mode to 50% duty cycle for powers
10 watts and over. That's why the question. I am not using
my K2 on psk31 because they have just started shipping
the SSB option, and I haven't gotten mine yet.

This is an old subject, and I don't remember the final numbers.
However, I'd like to add a new question to it. Peter, or anyone else
who might know, what is the effect of poor quality signal? In other
words, I assume that the 50% figure is for a nearly perfectly clean
signal. What happens to the average power when the intermod numbers
drop from -35db or better down to only 15-20db?
