Hi ...

Yesterday listened the ending of a 40 meter QSO around 7072. Sorry guys,
don't remember the calls, from US, but 529 both signals, despite of local
phone QSO.

Not to mention, in Florida, during hurricane season,
Weather is very much a Public SERVICE, (one of the
main reasons for "Ham" radio in the first place...).
So if someone can pick up a live update every 15 to 30
minutes by downloading the same from a PBBS, he might
see something developing before the Fluff-heads at the
TV/Radio station do and perhaps save his own boat/life
and maybe a few others as well. (Almost sounds like how
"Skywarn" and others work...). What about WEFax, should we
stop that mode too? How about Propagation beacons or the
way PBBS' let you know they are there by sending a CQ
Beacon every so often...
Anyone old enough to remember Camille? (Or even LAST Year?)
She was mighty powerful. Had then been more warning....
Perhaps......

Forgive my "soapbox". I see a lot of good in The New Mode.
But there is also a lot of good in the Old Modes, Even CW.
Each has benefits in certain conditions and situations and
other modes have them in a different set of conditions. We
need to keep exploring and finding new modes while keeping
the old ones. 20 years ago people would have asked what the
heck is a sound card.....

73's de John Jewkes W6HNC es tnx fer my 30 seconds of time.

BTW- Has anyone thought of making a chunk of software so if
you are away But your radio/computer are on to see a log of
any PSK that went on while you were gone, including relative
signal strength ?

Subject: [psk31] 8-bit vs 16-bit Sound Cards

Hi Gang,

I have been informed that my advice on how to distinguish an 8 bit sound card
from a 16 bit sound card is faulty.

Apparently, the length of the edge connector on the cards is not a sure test, so
cancel my comments on those edge connectors. The edge connectors are short for
the old 8 bit computers (that is the XT) and when the PC-AT came out, also known
as the 286, the connectors on the mother board were extended to accommodate the
16 bit bus. Then, later, the PCI bus became available (we won't even mention the
VESA bus) which is an entirely different form factor. The edge connector of a
card relates only to the interface with the computer bus.

So, the edge connector on the card cannot be used as a reliable indicator of the
sound card design (that is, whether it's 8 bit sound or 16 bit sound).

Subject: [psk31] RF problems in soundcards

From Peter Martinez G3PLX

The mechanism which gives RF feedback on PSK31 comes from RF current
injected via the ground line of the line input/output cable into the
printed circuit card of the soundcard and from there into the
electronics, which rectifies it. There is already a low impedance RF
path between the computer and the radio via other routes, probably
via the AC power safety wiring, and some of this wiring will be
carrying stray RF currents to ground from the transmitter output and
the antenna circuitry. The audio cable thus completes a low-impedance
RF ground loop. Any impedance of a hundred ohms or more in this cable
will prevent the loop current and so prevent the RF from getting into
the soudcard circuits. The braid-breaker toroid with the entire audio
cable threaded through it will do this job. Unless your radio is
upstairs and the computer is downstairs, don't worry about which end
of the cable to put it. Just put it out of sight, so that probably
means behind the computer.

Don't put separate chokes in the inner and outer wires of this cable:
That destroys the screening completely and lets ALL the RF get into
the inner wires. Winding the whole cable through a toroid stops the
RF current down the outer shield, stops RF getting down the inner
wires, AND maintains the screening of the inner wires to RF, and
furthermore, you don't even need to switch on the soldering iron to
make one. These ferrites (don't use iron dust toroids) have such a
high inductance factor that you don't need to worry about the
inductance resonating with something else. You can think of them as
being resistors above a few hundred kHz, with the resistance being
proportional to the square of the number of turns. Just add turns
through the ring until the problem goes away, except that if the
ferrite then gets hot when you transmit, add some more turns until it
doesn't! I always rescue the ferrite cores from the scan
transformers of old TV sets and they are ideal since they come apart
so you can wind cables with the connectors already fitted. Make sure
to remove any spacers from the gaps in the ferrites.

The audio isolating transformer is for breaking power-line hum loops,
not for breaking RF loops, and might even make an RF problem worse
since it introduces a capacitance between the ground lines which
might well resonate with something else and cause trouble at a
certain frequency. Even an isolating transformer with a Faraday
screen will only help if you can find somewhere to ground the screen
that doesn't simply double the stray capacitance.

3.2 milli-Hertz? That's lower than any RF frequency on Earth.

But then I suppose the Saturn frequencies are even lower....

wants to try a 40 meter qso. Just CQ and I'll tune you.
