Here in the Netherlands in every cheap computer shop (that's
all except IBM and Compaq) are for sale 16 bit ISA
soundcards of the Taiwanese brand Crystal for the
equivalent price of 8 to 12 dollars. You don't need second
hand for that and they work like a song!

Dear Bill,

As I understand it, you would first have to Unsubscribe completely by using the
currently subscribed account.

Then, once that has been acknowledged, you would have to subscribe afresh while
using the new account name.

If those steps are not possible for any reason, then I think your only recourse
is to contact the list owner and ask him to intervene manually to accomplish the
first step. You would then, still have to do the second step on your own.

Does that sound logical?

I added a two port serial card to my computer (a Pentium 133) in an
attempt to get two additional serial ports. However, I have only been
able to find one available IRQ (15 - as I only have one IDE channel
used), so I haven't been able to get the second port working.

On my machine, one serial port is used by the mouse. I use the second
one for PSK keying. I wanted to use an additional serial port for
controlling the transciever via it's serial port. Before I added the
additional serial port, I was able to use the DTR line for PSK keying
and the remaining lines to control the radio. I just built a cable
that split the DTR signal out. This worked for me because the same
program (my modified PSK software) was controlling the radio and
operating the DTR signal. When you use Windows to talk to the serial
port, only one application can talk to the port at a time. If two apps
try to open the same serial port, the second app will get a 'port
already in use error'.

Hi Guys. Just to let everyone know, there is an option for keying your
rig for PSK operation other than VOX (I find this undesirable as any
sound
generated by windows while I am monitoring would go out on the air!),
and using a com port (both of mine are in use too!) I built a simple
switch box, with a push-on push-off switch to key my rig for PSK
operation. Later, I added jacks for a foot switch, the original hand
mic, and a headset mic, with a DPDT center off toggle switch to switch
between mics, and a normally open pushbutton switch for keying when
using the headset.

Manual keying works very well for me for PSK, and I set the toggle
switch to it's center off position, so I don't get any mic audio.

Dear Mark and Tom and others,

I will take the liberty of copying Peter's recent remarks on this subject, since
you may missed it.

**********From Peter's bulletin************
It may be easier to decide how to configure COM3 or COM4 for PSK31SBW
PTT if I tell you that PSK31SBW doesn't need an IRQ line. It just
opens and closes the COM port and toggles the RTS and DTR pins. It
doesn't send any traffic or receive any traffic.

I don't think you can set Windows so that a COM port doesn't have an
IRQ, but if you do your extra COM3/4 ports with a plug-in card, you
could tell Windows that you are sharing the COM3/4 IRQ lines with
COM1/2 but simply not fit the appropriate IRQ jumpers on the card.
This way you could even have PSK31SBW running with COM3 or 4 while
another program is using COM1 or 2. If you cannot disable the IRQs
this way on COM3/4, you can still tell windows that you are sharing
IRQ's but you must remember NOT to use COM1 when COM3 is in use (or
vice versa) or COM2 when COM4 is in use (or vice versa).
**************End of Peter's bulletin*****************

You will note that Peter has equivocated on the issue of whether Windows will
allow you to de-allocate the IRQ that normally is assigned to a COM port. I have
tried to de-allocate the IRQ in Windows 98, and if there's a way to do that, I
haven't found it. I then decided to try the CMOS Setup, which allows me some
flexibility in choice of port address and IRq, but it also does not let me
de-allocate the IRQ entirely.

I think Peter's remarks were based on a Win 3.x system.

I take a pass on the questions of "sharing" interrupts between Serial Ports,
however, in the past I have noted that in Pre- Windows 9x days, that COM ports 1
& 3 were usually set up to share IRQ4 while COM ports 2 & 4 were usually set up
to share IRQ3.

Subject: [psk31] Taking another look at Pactor

Hi Fellow Warbler's

Hearing some QRM near 14070, I decided to re-visit my PK-900 and Pactor
mode to see who it was. Although we have been experiencing "some" TOR
QRM from time to time, looking from their standpoint, our warble doesn't
help their QSO either. Hopefully there will be some part of the band
for PSK31 too, so we don't bang into each other so much. Some PSK31
users may not even be familiar with the "agreed/courteous" use of the
digital comm freqs. If not, you might want to take a look. AC6V's
website has lot's of info about this and other Ham Info. Take a look at
Rod's great site:

http://www.ac6v.com/

However, that's not the point of this EMail. Getting back on Pactor
made "me" realize just how great PSK31 is compared to operating Pactor,
for the routine QSO. The throughput is noticably better for average
band conditions and power out, and the weak signal print is great too .
It is also pleasant not to have the handshaking necessary with TOR and
extra QRM, and PSK31 is much better for "reading the mail" , when
monitoring a QSO, instead of those missing text underlines associated
with the TOR mode. Yes, if you want error free communications, send it
Pactor or some other error correcting/ handshaking mode, but for regular
rag chews, PSK31 is the way to go. "Thanks Peter, G3PLX", we're
having a lot of Fun.

One thing I have noticed is the pactor folks are about the most
discourteous bunch on the air. They dont care if a freq is in use they just
start using it. They do the same thing in the RTTY section. They seem to
think they own the airways. I am tempted to get on pactor just to get thier
call letters and report them to the fcc. That is intentional interference.

Subject: [psk31] 8-bit vs 16-bit Sound Cards

Hi Gang,

I have been informed that my advice on how to distinguish an 8 bit sound card
from a 16 bit sound card is faulty.

Apparently, the length of the edge connector on the cards is not a sure test, so
cancel my comments on those edge connectors. The edge connectors are short for
the old 8 bit computers (that is the XT) and when the PC-AT came out, also known
as the 286, the connectors on the mother board were extended to accommodate the
16 bit bus. Then, later, the PCI bus became available (we won't even mention the
VESA bus) which is an entirely different form factor. The edge connector of a
card relates only to the interface with the computer bus.

So, the edge connector on the card cannot be used as a reliable indicator of the
sound card design (that is, whether it's 8 bit sound or 16 bit sound).

If that's the case, that he's just "broadcasting" and not in QSO, then
get his call sign and complain to the FCC. That is illegal.
