I'm not sure if it's a documentation error or not but doesn't it seem odd
that in Mix32 one needs to UNCHECK the NET/AFC boxes for them to do their
things. I would have expected that we needed to actually CHECK the boxes.

Having to try to remember to do this for each QSO is a bit of a pain.

Good software though.

Andy.

Wrong?????

Dear Andrew,

Here are the relevant statements in the Help file:

NET - Check to Zero Beat Receive Signal
AFC - Check to turn on Automatic Frequency Control

Why are you saying that it's backwards? Do you have the latest version of the
program and documentation? Ver 1.03/D is now available and has some improvements
that may interest you.

Subject: [psk31] Mix32demo ver 1.03 and any version - no transmit ??? TS-850

Good morning to all:

I have been on PSK31 with PSK31sbw1.06 and have had no problems.

When I downloaded and setup Mix32demo 1.03 and really any version
of this Mix32demo s/w, I can rcve great -- but no transit - not
even when I key the rig manually!

I have an IBM Aptiva with a Mwave soundcard. It transmits great
with PSK31sbw1.06 .. But, when I bring up Mix32demo1.03,
and type into the send box, no tones are heard and norhing is
transmitted??

Has anyone had this problem also..????

I am using the Kenwood TS-850s a/t and am driving the soundcard
autio out directly to the back ACCY2 plug of the TS-850s a/t.

I can be in PSK31sbw1.06 and transmit -- then kill the PSK31sbw1.06
program and bring up the Mix32demo1.03 program and go to setup,
and then after filling in everything, I try to transmit - just'
like I did with PSK31sbw1.06 --- BUT NOTHING!!!

Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong or just simply
NOT doing right???

That's pretty good. I'm glad that I'm not the only one that had a hard time with
that. The answer is pretty simple. You have to use either the Alt-X keystroke or
the Pause/Break key to toggle between Transmit and Receive,

Keep the Phase and happy warbling.

From: Peter Martinez <Peter.Martinez@btinternet.com>
Subject: [psk31] Multipath Effects on PSK31 Signals

From Peter Martinez G3PLX.

Bob's experiments on acoustic multipaths prompt me to add a few
observations.

If you have two paths which differ by half a wavelength, and they are
the same path loss, then they will cancel out completely. If they are
not quite the same amplitude or not quite half a wavelength
different, they don't quite cancel out. But this is only another way
of describing QSB, and is nothing to do with distortion of the
modulation: provided there is enough signal in the dip to receive the
signal above the local noise level, there will be no distortion of
the modulation.

To get multipath DISTORTION, which I think is what Bob is describing
(since he says the received signal is not "down in a dip"), whether
it be on an acoustic path or a radio one, you need the two paths to
be different by a significant fraction of an information symbol, not
just a significant fraction of a carrier wavelength, so that one
information symbol ends up interfering with the next one rather than
one cycle of carrier interfering with the next one. For PSK31,
therefore, we might expect to see multipath effects with path
differences which are a significant fraction of 32mS (one symbol at
31.25 baud), not a significant fraction of 1mS (1 wave period at 1kHz
audio carrier ) or even a significant fraction of 70nS (1 wave period
at 14MHz RF carrier).

Therefore paths which differ in length by amounts which are a few RF
wavelengths but much smaller than a symbol length, will just give you
QSB and nothing worse.

With the exception of some really odd-ball paths like a mix of
groundwave and HF back-scatter, the biggest difference in length
between two equal-amplitude paths seen on HF is the difference
between the E-layer and the F-layer. This is worst for a short
near-vertical-incidence path around sunrise or sunset, and is no more
than about 3mS.

You can see this as an echo quite clearly on broadband video modes
like SSTV, FAX, and even FeldHell, but this kind of multipath
propagation probably has no effect on PSK31. What we DO get on PSK31
is multiple equal-amplitude paths which differ by a few wavelengths
where the different paths are MOVING randomly at speeds fast enough
to give a doppler spread. This is the dreaded polar flutter problem.

I don't think Bob is seeing polar flutter in the acoustic
environment, but the path differences that he would get in his shack
are not long enough by themselves to account for the multipath
distortion he sees. However, from non-amateur work I have done with
ultrasonics, I do know that the acoustic reflections are very much
stronger than ionospheric ones, and so there may well be numerous
multiple reflections from walls, floors, and ceilings, especially in
a cube-shaped room. Perhaps Bob can be persuaded to follow up his
laboratory work with a field trial.

By which I mean repeating the experiment in the middle of a field!

Peter

Thought of another possibiblity in addition to the Toggle for Tx/Rx (Pause/Break
key), and that is that it may not be obvious which textbox is the Keyboard Entry
box for text to be transmitted. Use the Alt-K key to move the cursor to the text
box. That way there will be NO confusin about where the keyboard entry is for
text to be transmitted. The ESC key moves the cursor to the Logging textbox.

Beautiful, Peter. I am very happy that you have cleared up most of the
mysteries about multipath - my references were very uninformative, and it is
easy to grasp your points, now that they have been so wonderfully explained.

I will definitely continue with these experiments on a new basis.

Subject: [psk31] Mix32WDemo How to clear buffter?

While playing around with the program in psk mode and also testing the rtty
mode during field day I came across some confusion on clearing the buffter.
Hitting the wrong F key and sending the wrong message is embarrassing at
times.
Before sending the wrong text stored in the buffer I made sure I used ALT+K
to be in the buffter send screen. I pressed the wrong F key. I then tried
ALT=C, that was to clear the qso window only. Now what???? Then I tried to
highlight the text in the buffter and hit the delete key. Voila, that worked.
But it did not delete ALL the text and I wound up sending some junk that was
leftover as all the text did not appear in that window. Is there anyway in
the program to DELETE BUFFER that you have in the GNR front end or did I miss
something in the MixW32 text file. I could not find any clear cut method.

Marty,

One way is to right click in the window you want cleared and then select
clear from the pop up menu.

Contrary to what you might think, right clicking in the window and using the
popup menu to clear DOES NOT work while the program is sending text from that
window.

I don't think this is documented in Nick's Help file, but the simplest, and
quickest way to purge the Keyboard Buffer is the same way that you would do it
in ANY Windows program that has DDE (cut and paste) working.

Place the cursor in the Keyboard Buffer (Alt-K will do that), then use Ctrl-A to
Select All, then hit your delete key. That purges the entire Keyboard buffer.

You will then have to click the "spc" button twice in order to get the program
to come alive again. I think that may be a bug, but it can be dealt with.
