Subject: [psk31] FD and PSK

I read the comments on this topic-

I must say this situation is NOT UNCOMMON and can be dealt with easily.

A paralell situation is on uhf during contests. There isn't enough activity
to justify a full time op on a particular band and random band hopping
means you loose alot of contacts with others that are well within your
local area--just because you and your neighbor were never on the same band
at the same time.

The answer is to have activity hours-or, perhaps in the case of PSK FD, it
might be activity HALF HOURS::> It's simply a matter of establishing a
period of time to congregate on a particular band so that everyone is there
at the same time.

You can also do a more limited version--10m on the hour for 5 mins, 15m at
5 after for 5 mins, 20 meters at 10 after for 5 mins etc etc. It's most
likely that no one would be able to operate full time on psk, but atleast a
plan agreed to BEFORE FD would give you a chance to work more stations on
more bands becasue the band hopping ISN'T random.

Any such advance planning of activity periods would greatly improve the
chances of working all of those that have the mode available.

Has anyone ever thought of setting up a bot QSO machine? There was one in
Italy on 10m years ago and it was great fun to try and work it.

Perhaps I should have just summed this all up by saying 'let's be creative'.

Regards,

Art

I was there, where were all of you?? I made the same 12 or so psk31 contacts
that everyone else made though my first contact was on 15m. I heard no one on
40m or 10m (what happened to all those novice/tech plus?). I did call cq on
evry band through the 24 hours as we had one position dedicated to digital
contacts.

I think PSK31 would be ideal for emergency communications. It requires
basically the same equipment as any of the TOR's and info can be sent as fast
as high speed CW.

And YES!! we need an all band contest for PSK31 with a mutiplier for contacts
made OFF 20m.

50.300 on 6m for psk31 is what I've been using.

Subject: [psk31] MixW32Demo Horizontal Pointer and zero beat

Confused wnen dragging the checkered thin line to the horizontal pointer
which points to the right. The checkered thin line now changes to an arrow
pointing right. I aligned the arrow pointing right to the arrow pointing
left. Does this now mean I am zero beat with the PSK signal without retuning
the receiver??? Something does not seem clear. Can someone please clarify.
Trying to solve some confusion before registering. Love the waterfall and
other features. Real easy to zero beat using Peters program but still not
confident in MixW32Demo.

Hi Folks. I just heard of PKS31 this weekend at field day. I have done a
little investigating around the web and found alot of PKS31 sites but have
found no info on exactly what I need and how to connect it. I think as I
underastand what little I have gleaned is that a soundblaster card and
software is all you need. ??????????
I have been a ham since 1976. I spend all my ham time on HF working RTTY
or CW. I am in the prrocess of refurbishing a model 19 teleprinter.I have a
spare pentium II with sound card in the shack that I have been trying to
figure out what to do with. PKS31 sounds like fun. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks es 73's.

After being on PSK for several months and calling CQ several times a day
on 15, 17 and 40. I finally made my first PSK contact on 17M this
afternoon. I responded to AA3HO (Arnold) calling CQ. We chatted for 20
minutes or so and when I went to my log I saw that my ONLY contact on 15M
was with (guess who) ARNOLD back in May..

That makes AA3HO a alternative band pioneer ... let us hope the trend
continues.

Hey OM:

Your problem is solved! Put that Pentium and soundcard to use with the PSK31
mode, which is a real blast to use. The soundcard needs to be 16-bit.

If you get Peter's FREEWARE software,
ftp://det.bi.ehu.es/pub/ham/psk31/p31sbw106.zip , and then add to it with Al's
FREEWARE software, PSKGNR from: http://www.al-williams.com/wd5gnr/pskgnr.htm
I think you will have a great start. There is lots of good info within
Peter's HELP file, so be sure to read that.
You might want to also try Nick's, UT2UZ, software: the site for downloading
is:
www.nais.com/~jaffejim.
There are also others, which can be found linked at:
http://www.megalink.net/~n1rct/psk/pskin.html.

Have Fun, my friend.

Hi John. I would like to have tried PSK on 10m and 6m for field day.
Problem is, I could not beg or barrow a laptop! I am a Tech+ operator,
and have set up, and operated the Novice/Tech station at Field day for
several years now. Desktop computers are banned from the Field Day
site, because of interference concerns.
The club could only get enough laptops for computer logging at the 2
main stations.
(CW and Phone) Oh well, 6m and 10m were very good this year, and I made
more SSB contacts (with some help from a couple of relief ops!) than any
previous FD operation. I had lots of fun, and maybe next year I will
get to try some PSK. My station here at home will probably be back to
normal sometime this week.

I hope to meet you on 10m or 6m on PSK soon!

John,

I was there, as a tech-plus. 10M was dead here. Don't forget propagation and
don't forget tech plus can only operate digital on 10 Meters. I'm sure we would
be on the other bands if licenses allowed.
