Subject: [psk31] First Impressions of MixW32 or 10 reasons why you may want to try it.
Downloaded the program MixW32.zip from the site www.nais.com/~jaffejim
this afternoon and tried it out.
First impressions:
1) Screen requires resolution of 800 x 600 minimum. Anything lower and it won't
fit.
2) Colors in the various windows do not show up unless you are using 16 bit
color. At 256 color palette, the windows are all white.
3) Lack of a Phase Scope upset me at first, but I got use to that.
4) The Spectrum Analyzer Display is quite different from the waterfall, and I
really prefer the waterfall. However, it seems to be about the same width in Hz
(about 500 Hz, I think)
5) The number of separate windows is daunting. I still haven't figured out what
most of them are for. I finally figured out where to do my typing, and that got
me on the air - didn't worry about the other windows.
6) Cut and Paste works, and it works quite well.
7) The type ahead buffer only screwed me once, and I never did figure out what
happened. I had quite a string of characters in it, and suddenly my signal shut
down. I have no idea what happened. Once I had the presence of mind to toggle
back to transmit mode, the rest of it went straight away.
8) Took me forever to figure out how to transmit. It's Alt-X to toggle between
receive and transmit in case you're still looking for that.
9) The documentation sucks, but hey, that's not a sin. Very few Windows programs
have full blown Windows type help files with Hyperlinks, etc. Peter's program is
an exception on that score.
10) It's a shame that the program is not free, but we've been spoiled by Peter's
largesse. You can count the number of really great free programs on one hand,
PSK31SBW, PaintShopPro, WinZip, and my Smith Chart Program - Hi.
My one and only contact with this program was with XE1JP, bless his soul. He and
I jawed about the program for half an hour this afternoon with 100% copy
throughout.

If you are having problems fitting MIXW32 on your screen, you need to
change from a VGA screen to a SVGA (super vga) screen. If you have
Windows 95, right click on the desktop, go to properties, and settings,
and move the slider to 800x600 and follow the instruction screens. If
you don't have a 800x600 slider selection, you need a different video
driver. In Windows 3.1, you need the SVGA video driver for Windows 3.1,
which you can get from the Microsoft support site. In any case, try to
be sure your monitor supports SVGA, or using a new driver may burn it
out!

I am running an Icom 751A
Signals are getting to the sound card(can hear the sig. in the spkrs)
Running Diamond card 16 bits
Audio is going in LINE jack, tip is sig, back sleeve is gng.
Record mode set at 1/2 scale gives random garble print, sig or no sig.
Record set at 1/4 scale, no garble printed.
Playback mode set at 1/2 scale in each situation mentioned above.
HERE'S the real clue: no matter the tuning ,the horizontal tuning bar
remains black. No other color is visible.
The scope has no lines at anytime.
I have varied the volume and made all my attempts in USB.
The sample rate is set at 8000
Center Frequency is 1000
Mode is BPSK
The transmit line is not plugged in . (One problem at a time!)
I am using some rather healthy signals off 14.070.
I am using the same levels(volume and signal) which have been successful
for RTTY copy in past experiences.
So, folks, what is the operator error!!
Your help will be appreciated!

And Paint Shop Pro AIN'T free folks. At least the current version which is
really the
only one worth having is not free. It IS worth its' price though, easily.

WinZIP (from Nico Mak Computing) is not free software. From their
license agreement:
"This is not free software. Subject to the terms below, you are
hereby licensed to use this software for evaluation purposes without
charge for a period of 21 days. If you use this software after the 21
day evaluation period a registration fee of $29 is required."
I think there may be a free unZIP utility.

You did not give us your operating system, or your CPU - not that it should make
a big difference, so long as you have a 486DX66. I know that people have used
lesser processors, but my personal experience with a 486SX25 was very
disappointing.
I don't understand you audio settings because they are not corellating with the
audio mixer applet that is present in my Windows 9x installation. Perhaps the
Diamond sound card has its own mixer program, and that may well be the
underlying problem.
Your audio line into the sound card seems to be OK, but let's make sure.
Normally, the Line-In jack is a stereo jack. Now, you say that you hear the
receiver signals in the speakers, so we know it's getting into the sound card to
some extent. Be advised that the mixer has a balance control for Left-Right
Balance. Also be advised that there are usually "Mute" check boxes on each
volume level slider in the mixer. The "Mute" check box will eliminate the output
of the sound channel muted from appearing at the Line-Out/SPKR OUT jack, but the
"Mute" check box does NOT remove that channel from the recording process - which
is the process feeding the PSK31SBW software.
So, the only recommendation that I can make is to make another throrough check
on "level sliders", and "balance sliders" on all of the relevant channels -
namely, Volume, Wave, and Line-In. " Wave" may be the one that you have
neglected, but I can't imagine your hearing the receiver signals in the speakers
(of the sound card) without the signal getting through to the program.
>HERE'S the real clue: no matter the tuning ,the horizontal tuning bar

That horizontal tuning bar is known as the waterfall, or as some have declared,
the WFD.

Good idea - that's the scientific approach, and there's nothing wrong with those
settings except for the 8000 sample rate. All sound cards seem to recognize
11025 as a viable sample rate, but I think some cards do not respond well to
other sampling rate values. Try 11025.0
Does the mouse cursor blink markedly? If so, that would indicated that the
processor is not able to keep up with the job. Another indicator is that the
mouse will not bring up menu items, such as Setup.

Hi Gang,
Robert, W9DMK made mention of using ALT + X to toggle back and forth from RCV
and XMT in Mix32W. I was frustrated at first but did notice in the text file
to use the
"PAUSE/BREAK" key which is much easier. I hate reading text/doc files so I
missed it at first. The more I play with MixW32 the more I like it. Would
love to see the best of GNR, PSK31 and MixW32 as an all in one.

Atta boy Marty !! Read those text files/documentation files completely and
carefully and perhaps several times.... A specific amount of time, to varying
degrees, have been applied to writing those docs, and end-users should make use
of them fully.
I noted W9DMK's apparent oversight; as well as knowing that the PAUSE/BREAK key
was mentioned FIRST and the ALT-X secondly for toggling Tx/Rx within the doc
file.

Has anyone tried the Baudot RTTY function in MIX32Demo? I have been able to receive/print Baudot RTTY here, but no one has as yet responded to my RTTY CQs.
If this function does indeed work for me, I suppose that I can then retire the CoCo, NEC Greenscreen monitor, and my homemade AFSK modem interface; finally ~!~
I do hear diddle tones via the FT1000d MONI function here, so I believe that I am transmitting RTTY okay.
I would appreciate hearing from someone that can verify the working status of the Baudot RTTY function within MIX32Demo. Perhaps this function is not yet enabled in the Beta Demo version ? I have not come across anything
relative to FSK31 either...

Greetings to the list,
I'm interested in hearing from anyone using an Alinco DX70TH for PSK31.
This transceiver is not specifically designed for digital modes (well,
other than CW) but the manual gives instructions for running RTTY, Fax,
and SSTV through the microphone connector.
Thanks, Pete JY9NE

I had a similar experience on a friends new setup.
We discovered that setting the line in /out sliders on the default windows
mixer did nothing.
It wasn't until I searched his hard drive for "mixer" did I find the mixer
control which was installed with his sound card.
After making adjustments to this mixer all was well again. I made a short
cut for him and advised him to use this mixer when adjusting for PSK31.
Good luck...It's worth the effort to get it running!
