Well, I finally got a new rig intending to set up a PSK station. Now
I am dealing with a noise problem from my computer. Due to circum-
stances (antennaless community and layout my house) I cannot move my
antenna further from my computer. Anyone out there had any luck using
the MFJ-1026 noise canceller to eliminate computer noise? Looks like
a good unit but I'm loath to spend $170 without some feedback from
people who have used one.

Dear all.
Just to say hello to all and report that now I upgrade my licence to
EA4CBH
(as novice ec4aim ).
Now I have a web in spanish (becouse there are a lot in english)
http://www.qsl.net/ea4cbh
under construction but I'll be updated as soon as possible.
I only have 10m. and I acheive only 1 PSK31 as you can see in my
webpage.
Please can any one try in the evenigs , 28120.1 is ok?
The same for Hellscriber or SSTV, at its own QRG of course!
( I know that a lot are registered in other reflectors)

Hi Marcus, and the group!
Yes, I too have noticed that 15m activity very rarely takes place around the
suggested frequencies. This to me is a shame as for some reason, my monitor
seems to HATE 21.065 to 21.078MHz. It gives S9+10 noise minimum. Above .078
there is no problem at all! Does anyone else have the same problem?
Congratulations on your loggings! I'd be interested to see a country/band
breakdown to see how many people are active on the other (not 20m! :o) bands.
10 and 12m sound quite impressive. Here in England I'm still finding that
10m is a pretty unstable band. Long periods of quiet, interrupted only by
the odd European calling. Of course, the evenings produce some DX, but as
yet I've not heard any PSK around 28.120. 12m seems much more stable. At
the weekend I logged 9J2BO, ZS6AVP, EL2WW, E41/G3WQU, PY2XB and 4Z4FL - all
on CW, and at different times of the day. Again, the CW's coming in quite
strongly, but I'm not hearing anyone calling in PSK!
I guess I'll have to sit parked on 24.920 for a day or two :o)
Yes, I'm looking forward to the HB0 operation. Should be interesting to see
if they go with the DXpedition style of operating, or the much more personal
and regular PSK contact.
I will keep the reflector updated of the things I'm logging on PSK. I
already exchange my loggings with my SWL friend Maury - I121171, so I can
pass on what's being heard in Italy too.

Subject: Re: [psk31] DXpeditions on PSK
Hi again Andy and the group!
This was a question I posed myself on the DX Reflectors last week. OK, so my
message was a bit multi-purpose - partly promotion of PSK31 and Feld-Hell
too, but I did genuinely have an interest in why DX-peditions have NOT been
using these great modes.
I received around 20 replies - 16 of which asked where they could get the
software from - naturally I told them. The other 4 brought up a few
interesting points.
1) DX-peditions tend to use Lap-tops for logging. Until recently Lap-tops
VERY seldomly came fitted with 16 Bit Sound-cards. With all the other costs
associated with DX-peditions, I guess finding another $4000 (or whatever they
cost in the US) for a brandnew, top of the range lap-top is not exactly top
of their priorities list.
2) Speed of operation. I have been told that the average QSO length would
be too long. DX-peditions have an obligation to "get people in the log".
Apparently PSK31 does not lend itself to this type of operation. Personally,
from experience, I don't see that it needs to take ANY longer than a QSO with
a DX-pedition in RTTY. Yes, I know that traditionally a PSK31 QSO consists
of Name, QTH, Software, Computer, Rig etc, and I'm not saying there's
anything wrong with that, but surely if a new country comes along, just
exchanging a 599 would suffice. I don't know, what's your opinion?
I saw the contest thread the other day. I personally think it would be nice
to have a few more PSK31 contests. I also think it would be nice if those
NOT interested in the contests all decided to go and make use of non-contest
areas that day - ie WARC bands, as happens with phone and CW contests. Have
you ever looked at the WARC bands during CQ WW? They're absolutely buzzing!
17m is nearly ALWAYS open at the minute. - 24 hours a day. 30m must be
pretty similar.
Anyway, back to this......
3) DXCC. As far as I'm aware, PSK31 is NOT a recognised mode for DXCC as
yet. Why would DX-peditions spend thousands of dollars to go to some remote
place, and then work a bunch of guys whose QSOs would be worthless for DXCC?
I don't think too many big multi-mode DXpeditions would be up for that. It
would require specific digital mode DXpeditions for now. I might be wrong,
but I don't think there are too many of these.
Basically I don't see this changing until DXCC is available on PSK31. As
we've come to the conclusion that thereare only about 50 DXCC entities
currently active, it might be a little early to start hammering on the ARRL
doors to get them to add PSK31. However, I'm sure a few friendly e-mail
enquiries aren't going to do any harm. The more they change now, the less
they'll have to do in the future..... Sounds like, for the time being at
least, 100 Countries on PSK31 is quite a challenge. Come on, I'll race you
to it :o)
BTW, keep an ear open for V31JP who's promised to try to get a PSK31 station
going before long! As soon as he has a *proper* PC he'll be active.

Just an idea. How about starting up a directory of those who are active on
PSK31? I'd be more than happy to do this, and of course, the list would be
available to anyone on request.
Please go through your logs and send me a copy of the stations you've
worked/heard, along with their e-mail address/QSL route if you have it.
It should be interesting to see how many people are active on PSK31!

Yes, it shifted the carrier. And when I said 1960's that was a mistype.
Read the 1970s .... 1973 at a guess.

Since you posted your log yesterday, I started thinking:
- - Nino - IZ8BLY (Author of a FeldHell program) keeps on his home page a
"FeldHell DXCC list". It's not a real thing but every user updates their
worked countries by themselves in a regular basis. It's an informal
"competition", just for fun. Seems an automatic feature.
- - Other thing he did: included a "FeldHell user directory" with some minimal
data having name, callsign and interface/software used. And the same HTML
document can be read by his software so "who is" returns with some info abt
such station. OK, people need to send data to him but updates are done
downloading the html page from time to time.
So that's it. Take a look at Nino's home page at:

As soon as U need our data ...

Been busy on paying work but PSKGNR 1.31.3 is available. Just small
maintenance fixes -- nothing most people would notice.
I have made the software smart enough to add a backslash to the end of the
buckmaster string if you forget and the POBox handling on the FCC database
is improved.

Yes but at different frequencies. Use to have this from 3 to 6MHz, solved
with PC AC connector mods (the female plug where normally we connect the
monitor).
- - I added two ceramic capacitors inside the PC power supply (4700nf/630V
each) between the phase<>chassi and neutral<>chassi
- - Some ferrite clamps here and there: mouse cord, keyboard cord.
- - The serial cables (to Kachina rig) is a 3 wire Belden audio cable, wounded
on to a T82 ferrite core, may be 8 to 10 turns, close to the PC side DB9.
May be small ferrite bead chokes (2...5 turns) on each wire on serial /
parallel connectors works (as common mode filters), assembled inside DB9/25
plugs.
- - The main wall mount AC outlet used: there is a 10 turn common mode choke,
wounded on a 2 inches toroid core (3 X #14 wire, flat cable - to
phase/neutral/ground). Is hidden inside and old wall transformer plastic
enclosure (use to be a 110>220 xformer hi). This one don't allow that noise
generated by PC, printers et all uses the AC wiring as antennas. No
capacitors on that! It's not a low pass filter.
And finally, switch between 800/600 or 640/480 resolution depending on the
desired band. Not a clean solution but allows to keep operating.
One of my monitors (BW SVGA) was modified to have ferrite chokes on each AC
wire (phase/neutral/gnd) AND a cardboard/aluminum "sandwich" was installed
bellow the printed circuit board and connected to several ground spots at
the PCB itself. This reduced the 18 ...20MHz noise a lot - I SWL
sometimes:o)
Using this setup I'm able to run 3 computers at the same time: a 133MHz
laptop, a P120 and a DX4-100, besides 2 switched power supplies from Gould
Advance - from 100KHz to some GHz - and the problems that I still noticing
came outside my home.

Look in the QST product review data base (If your an
ARRL member the product reviews are on the members
only web section)or CQ review index. One of them did a
big test of the MFJ noise canceler and gave it really
good marks. You should try some other things to help
your PC though. Make sure all the rear panel card
slots have a card or a shield in place. Use the Radio
Shack snap on torroids on each cable going to the rear
of the computer and monitor. Most of the noise is
usually from the monitor. If your feeling brave open
up your monitor and check to see if the plastic case
has any shielding on the inside. One good trick is to
spray the inside of the case with zinc chromate paint
and ground the chassis to the case with a copper
washer and some copper braid to the painted surface of
the inside of the case case. Put copper screening in
front of any fan openings on the computer case and
ground it. make sure that your antenna cables are
good quality 95% or more coax. Cheap radio shack coax
leaks rf! Make sure all of your radio equipment is
properly grounded and consider using coax for your
power cables from the 12 V. power supply to the radios
and TNCs. A lot of RF is picked up by unshielded
power cables. Try these tricks first before investing
in the noise canceller. I had the same problem and
five or six hours of shielding work eliminated 99% of
it. You have to remember that in 1992 the FCC quit
testing electronic equipment for emissions. It is up
to manufacturers to meet the FCC "guidlines".
Basically there are no computer makers who's equipment
even comes close to the pre-1992 standards before they
were relaxed. Newer computers are noisey and leaky so
its up to the owner to cure the problem. If you ever
come across an old Hewlett Packard Vectra 33 or 66
snap it up and gut the case. Transplant your pentium
into the HP case because the old vectra's were almost
MIL SPEC in shielding and EMI leakage. They have a
dual case with copper braid rf gasketing around all
the components. NOBODY makes a computer case even
close.
