High Speed Home Powerline

Networking Technology

PowerPacket technology delivers high-speed network access through existing
home powerlines. Now, virtually any electronic device in the home can be
connected to another, giving homeowners access to a new realm of applications
for information, data, entertainment, security, energy management, and ore.

PowerPacket enables the fastest and most robust powerline products in the home
networking market. At speeds of up to 14Mbps, homeowners enjoy the advantages
of Ethernet networks, but with No New WiresÖ. It's quick and easy to use.
Simply plug PowerPacket ready devices into any power outlet in the home.
Instantly, the power outlet becomes a high-speed link for sharing information
from PC's, appliances, and other devices inside the home, to Internet access
and broadband services outside the home.

Cost effective solution for home networking Two or more users can
simultaneously share an Internet account, play games one-on-one, or share
files and printers. All at a fast 14Mbps.

Easy to use Pervasive home power outlets make sharing information between
devices as simple as plugging a power cord into an outlet.

No New Wires technology PowerPacket communicates over the powerline. The same
powerline that powers
the PC now provides the communication link.

Gateway to new services and products PowerPacket opens the door to new and
exciting home products and services:
Security devices, information appliances, Internet music jukeboxes, and
interactive games and entertainment programs that are shared through multiple
connections to the Internet.

PowerPacket Technology

PowerPacket employs a spectrum efficient modulation technique that enables
powerline transmission of very high data rates. Data rates up to 100 Million
bits per second (Mbps) are possible. PowerPacket is a multiple carrier system
with characteristics that make it adaptable to environments with harsh
multi-path reflections, large narrowband interference, and impulse noise
without equalization. Equalization becomes very complex and expensive, if not
impossible, for data rates above 10 Mbps with single carrier modulation.

As the digital age continues, the demand to send digital voice, video, and
Internet data to and around a home, office or other building increases
continuously. The cost of installing wires to support this is expensive,
disruptive and time consuming. Our focus at Intellon is to provide cost
effective No New Wires solutions to this ever-increasing need.

Many formidable obstacles stand in the way of achieving reliable very
high-speed data communications over the powerline. Multipath delay spreading
makes achieving high data rates difficult. Communication on the AC powerline
is difficult because of unpredictable noise and interference from numerous
sources, high attenuation levels and widely varying impedance, and multipath
delay spread. FCC rules can also be a hindrance.

Intellon has developed PowerPacket to provide a cost-effective solution to
these problems. This new technology lends itself to functioning reliably in
the harsh environments of the AC powerline.
