blech, those maps are crap. Get APRS+SA and a copy of street atlas for
detailed maps of the entire country. if you're really into APRS, you won't
regret it.

If you wish to do that there is the Baypac or the Baycom modems that attach
directly to the serial port, or parallel port in the case of the 9k6 baud
unit and the rest is done with software. I have one, works just fine. It
gives you few unique advantages that you would need to put your expensive
tnc into KISS mode for. Such as working with an AX25 driver and running
tcp/ip programs that are designed for the ham in mind. Like an "ether card"
for radio in a sense. They are much less expensive than the tnc also as
they need not include the rest of the internal unit other than just the
modem section.

You are right!
But often is the tnc used as if it was only a modem, in kiss mode etc.
Most tncs are to slow to handle a so good packet driver as a pc can, so
to use a tnc is often less good than a nother modem.
The computers to day are much faster than in the early days of packet
then tncs was needed.
To day is only tncs needed for higher speeds (over 19k2).
A tnc that is fast enough to handle a good packet driver driver are very
expensive and such tncs are mainly for high speed packet.
