Ever wanted to try 9k6 packet but didn't want to tie up that expensive black
box?
Well after completing an over enthusiastic project to set up as many
amateurs on packet with 9k6 rigs as were interested in the West Berkshire
area I have a number of Tait T196 UHF mobiles and cradles left. These ex-PMR
sets have all had the microphones removed (but available if you really want
them), have cradles and power/aerial leads with them - and some, where the
mods have been done, have been fitted with a 5 pin din lead for direct to
tnc connector.
They are an ideal radio to compliment the G4XYW 9k6 modem from the Thames
Valley IP User Group (TVIPUG) and together make a very cheap option to get
into 9k6 packet. For more info on the modem see
http://www.tvipug.freeserve.co.uk/
Very nice rig clean, crystal controlled - 6 channels and are 25KHz spacing,
easy to work on and are ideal conversion sets. If you want one for 12.5KHz
voice I still have the filters as well.
They are currently tuned TX and RX on 432.625 MHz - good sensitivity and 0
to 20 watts variable out. All working with full service manual information
and simple 9k6 modification information.
Unmodded but tuned for £15.00 plus p&p. ( 5 of these)
Modded and tuned - plug straight into a tnc for £20.00 plus p&p ( 4 of
these)
Modded, tuned and running on 432.625 MHz for £35 plus p&p ( only one or 2 of
these)
Crystals are available from HyQ for £15 the pair on 10 day turn round. I
have one running one in the shack all the time and the local tcp/ip box
GB7NEW runs one on the 9k6 UHF port.
If you live Newbury area you can collect, save your postage costs and even
see one working.
regards
Steve

Subject: Packet BBS Info help!
I currently run a Wildcat BBS on a 75mhz Pentium machine and was
wondering what the best TNC would be to use with a door program that
will control the controller. I am thinking of using an old business
band radio converted to 2-meters for the packet station but the TNC is
my only concerne. The name of the program that will control the TNC is
just called "Amateur Radio Packet Door". The reason being for this is,
there is little activity on 2-meter packet in my area and wanted to
set this up to see if it will help to increase traffic. There are alot
of station with the capability, but are not usually around at the same
time. Hopefully someone can help!
Thanks,
kf6foz
