Yes, packet has died. APRS has given it new life, but overall usage has
declined dramatically.
The internet gives the spped and liberty packet radio does not, unless you
live in a jungle where there are no phones.
I used to be a packet freak, but in the past 2-3 years the TNC's are
gathering dust. There's no one to talk to anymore.
The only place packet still has some life left is with satellite work
(PACSATS), and HF dxing.
Otherwise I'm selling my TNC's and sticking to e-mail.

What you say about packet being (almost) dead may be true. There is no
reason to compete with e-mail via the Internet. However, some people in
my area (Fremont CA, USA) are thinking packet may be useful for
emergency communications. We recently did a drill with emergency traffic
over a directed voice net, and then messages went from net control to
the city's Emergency Operations Center via packet. Just the fact that we
generated printed messages impresses the heck out of city's emergency
officials. Now we are hoping to set up packet stations in the various
districts of the city in addition to voice.

What kind of TNC's do you have and how much are you asking for them?
