i used an old telephone modem with a 7910 chip inside (nigthingale, a modem
for the vc64).
the computer-modem cable has to be changed. the analog in and out points
have to be changed (the whole telephone adaptor network was removed). a ptt
switch was build into the modem. the software is baycom. works 100% at 1200
bps.

Subject: Soundcard vs. Baycom vs. TNC

Some say a cheap 486 or better with a soundcard configured for
pack via FlexNet can be cheaper and also works better.

Some say decoding is better on a Baycom interface or TNC.

Which is it?

Can we put forth facts to show the pros and cons. Keep in mind
that an initial decoding of a packet does not contitute long
term agressive useage relibility. So when you say you've tried
it or that it works please also state for how long. Especially
if you *just* set it up.

Thanks
Happy packeting

A Baycomm type modem is proven technology. It works very well. But the
chips used in the "ORIGINAL" Baycomm modem have NOT been made for years.
They are very scarce.

Alternatively, you can make a Baycomm type modem using a MX614 chip. See
January QST for details on the NEW Baycomm type modem using a MX614 chip.
Far Circuits sells mini kits.

The new Baycomm modem based on the MX614 chip works great as a Baycomm modem
replacement. It is plug and play compatible. In other words, the new
Baycomm type mode based on the MX614 chip will work with all software that
supports a Baycomm modem using your computer's serial port. The new Baycomm
modem also works with Poor Man's Packet using your parallel port!

In my view, the newer Baycomm type modem using a MX614 chip uses a superior
design than the original Baycomm modem design. Amongst other things, you
don't have to worry about critical receive bias adjustment etc with the
MX614.

In my view, the BIGGEST problem with a Baycomm style modem is that it takes
up a serial port (or a parallel port with the MX614 and Poor Man's Packet).
Many Ham's do not have serial or parallel ports to spare (especially on
laptops).

Using a sound card for packet frees up your serial and parallel ports for
other uses (like rig control etc).

FLEXNET running under Window 95 works great (with most sound cards).
FLEXNET may not work under Windows 98 (but I hear a Windows 98 version is in
the works).

FLEXNET has dynamically adjusts the timing parameters based on the quality
of the link and the presence of other stations on the frequency. Some HAM's
do NOT like this feature.

Due to the wide variety of sound cards, it is important to note that the
performance will vary between different types of sound cards. Some sound
cards may not work at all!

There is also AGW packet engine which appears to be working just fine on my
computer with a sound card. But others have reported problems with AGW.
Eventually all the bugs will be worked out. But I expect that even with
some sound cards, AGW may not work well DUE to the quality and type of sound
card.

But you can download AGW (or FLEXNET) and see whether it works on your
computer with your sound card. If it doesn't work, send in a bug report.
Don't just complain on the newsgroups. And remember FLEXNET and AGW are
FREEWARE for Ham Radio use (unless you decide to buy a licence for AGW's
TCP/IP capability).

Depending on your sound card, AGW or FLEXNET may NEVER work well. If you
have a poor sound card, don't blame the authors of AGW and FLEXNET. Blame
your sound card manufacturer.

I was right with you up till the end there. It was an
insightfull post. But, I disagree on this point. If Flex is
working (and it is so far) and AGW isn't (poor performance,
freeze ups) on the same soundcard then AGWPE can be improved
upon. I did send a bug report by the way.

Saludos.
Gracias.
