That "could" was supposed to be a "choose" reading......
One might CHOOSE not to use the soundcard for packet instead of
regular audio.
Meaning, to each his own.

I've noticed AGW works much slower than FlexNet. How do you know
FlexNet decodes less good than a Baycom type modem or TNC.
Good point though. One might could not to use the soundcard for
packet instead of regular audio.
I think I've been clear on what hardware I'm running.

Simple, as a test I simultaneously input the same audio into a Tiny-2
TNC and into the sound card. I've done it with both AGWPE and with
Flexnet. There's no comparison - the TNC will consistently decode far
more packets than does the sound card, and is far less fussy about the
audio level. Where does a Baycom modem come into it? The Tiny-2 uses the
same modem chip as a Baycom (TCM3105), and so the performance is very
comparable, assuming that your PC is capable of properly handling a
Baycom modem, which some aren't.

Sorry, but I must have missed it. I remember someone saying they were
using a Yamaha sound card, was that you?

So why are some PC's not capable of using a Baycom type
interface exactly?

Three main reasons:-
1. Don't see the change in state of the CTS line. Only happens with
modems that copy the original Baycom design which didn't have a
transistor on the CTS output, but a lot of those are in use in the UK.
It's easy enough to mod the modem and add the transistor.
2. Can't source enough current on the handshaking lines to power it.
3. To work properly, a Baycom modem driver requires a low and consistent
interrupt latency. In DOS that's not a problem, but in Windows it can
be. In particular, some poorly written hardware device drivers will
disable interrupts for long enough to cause problems. Even if the Baycom
driver is running at Ring 0 (a VXD), this can still cause a problem.
Graphics card drivers are the worst culprits, the original driver for
the Matrox Millennium graphics card, if used with PCI bus mastering
enabled, was a good example.
