I thought that separation would help. But the old, noisy computer is still
part of the problem, I suspect. I don't think the battery/charging situation
has anything to do with the problem. I have heard chargers make a whistling
noise but not the type of "birdie" noise you described and not from a laptop
charger. Your problem is typical.

You might be able to turn-up another computer from one of the other hams.
Ask around and I'm sure someone has an old 386 or 486 system stuck in the
garage that could be had. This would at least allow you to run tests.  You
did not mention if your Pentium computer causes noise. If not, then back to
the 286.

If the TNC and radio can only be separated by two feet why not lengthen the
cable. Put the HT as far from the TNC and computer as is reasonable. If the
TNC is especially noisy for some reason maybe the two feet isn't enough
especially for an HT.
