This doesn't exactly answer your question, but.......
It would be hard to have the display change after an anticipated message is
received. This would involve adding assembly language programming, while
keeping the Kenwood programming intact.
However, it would be very possible to add an external microprocessor circuit
to
fit inside the TH-D7 that could poll the message memory area for a message,
then give a tone, or something like that. This would use the PC port to
control
the radio. You can find out more about using this PC port to control the radio
at my website.

what type of equipment and access does each point have?
a simple solution is a direct phone to phone connection, just use your
modems and some terminal emulator and talk to each other, do a file
transfer.
got internet?

Depending on how large the file is one option if its not to large is send
the file via an email attachment then on the other hand if its a large file
get warftp and set yourself up a ftp server on your home box., war from
www.jgaa.com also you may want to get dynip from www.dynip.com this will
track your ip address assighned to you from your isp giveing you a domain
name so that other internet users can find your ftp site... My lame cable
internet isp does not allow this type of server but you may be much more
lukier than I. Good Luck.
